Here are the best songs released in Tamil for the months of September and October 2024

1. Naan Enge

Singer - Shankar Mahadevan

Music Composition, Production: Manoj Krishna

Lyricist - Karthick Netha

Additional Programming: Ashwin Raja

Language: Tamil

Genre: Semi-classical fusion

Mood: Devotional

I recently reviewed the movie album of "Aalan" by young musician Manoj Krishna. I was intrigued by the 4 amazing songs which were filled with wonderful arrangements, and production and this was my favourite of the album. Manoj ropes in the iconic Shankar Mahadevan to deliver the devotional number and not many like Shankar could have delivered with such poise. The additional vocals of Shenbagaraj Ganesalingam, Sudharsan , Vignesh Narayanan Ganesalingam and Deepak Blue give goosebumps when they chant " Om Namashivaya".

Feel the divinity with the Indian percussions and the Damru. Shankar takes us on a journey to the heavenly abode of the Gods with his voice and delivery. There are fragments of Mayamalava Gowla, Saveri, Lalitha and Nadanamakriya Ragams. Punya Srinivas plays the emphatic Veena solo in the interlude and the vision and brilliance of Manoj Krishna shows. The two instruments that appear here are the Veena and Damru , which are known and believed to be Lord Shiva's instruments, something the Lord himself played. Karthik Netha writes these fantastic lines.

The Indian percussion is played by Krishna Kishore and KV Prasad. The way Shankar sings with his Carnatic-alden ghamakas is a pleasure to teh ears. The heart feels heavy when he sings " Theeramal thuyaram thorathiduthe, porada mana kathariduthe". KV Prasad's Mridangam is constantly adding to the excellent Carnatic flavours. Shyam Raghav plays the Violin Solo. The amazing strings section is arranged by Ashwin Raja and played by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. Balasubramanian G is the Orchestra Co-ordinator. The recording engineers are KS Mani Ratnam at The Mystic’s Room and Ameya Mategaonkar at Lambodhara Studios, Mumbai. The tracks are mixed and mastered by KS Mani Ratnam.

2. Chillanjirukkiye

Music Composed and Arranged by Sean Roldan

Singer: Pradeep Kumar, Shivangi

Lyrics: Mohan Rajan

Music Production: Sean Roldan, Jim Sathya

Language: Tamil

Genre: Folk/Light Music

Mood: Romantic

Here comes Sean Roldan, after a terrific album "Raghu Thatha", (which I rated 4/5), with a fantastic song in the new movie " Lubber Panthu" streaming on Disney Hotstar. It is the best in the album and it has one of the finest vocalists on display. It all begins with Ashish Venkatestwaran's beautiful intro on the solo flute, along with a stringed instrument (maybe a Ukulele, or a Mandolin). Sean composed the melody and arranged and co-produced the song with Jim Sathya.

The fantastic voice and the vibrato of Pradeep make my heart feel full. The strings section is extravagant in the background after Pradeep finishes the line "Enna Kollura Arakkiye", and here we hear a fabulous melody on the flute solo and my heart skips many beats while listening to the beauty. Enjoy the sound of the Ghatam and the rhythm programming makes you want to get up and do a folkish dance step. Ashwin Raja, Gautam Prasad, and Sebastian Varghese provide the additional programming.

I stand up and bow to Sean for his brilliance and you too will feel it when you hear the flowy strings section, with the rapid flute riffs in the background. Sean comes in and entertains with that mild humming in the interlude. The stanza is where Sean further develops the melody and the gentle Piano is a good addition to the production here. Shivangi joins in the second stanza as the female lead vocalist and that baritonish delivery makes me go weak at the knees. What a terrific display of singing that is! Mohan Rajan makes the heart flutter with love thanks to all his words.

The recording engineer is Aswin George John with assistance from Kiran Kashyap. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Balu Thankachan at 20db Black, and Paul Daniel assisted in the session.

3. Hey Minnale

Composed by GV Prakash

Lyrics - Karthik Netha

Vocals - Haricharan & Shweta Mohan

Programmer : Aswin Sathya

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

When I heard this single, I was thankful that GV Prakash employed well-known trained playback singers for the job, something that we have missed and desperately wanted in Tamil cinema in the last year or so. Haricharan and Shweta Mohan perform this love song with brilliance, and undoubtedly this becomes one of the finest movie songs this year. This is how film music used to sound and the audience would be crazy about music back in the 2000s. Lalit Talluri plays the flute solo, and Sandeep Mohan plays the guitar in the intro. Karthik Netha writes these beautiful romantic lines.

Kalyan entices you into a dance with gorgeous rhythms, and soon enough Haricharan's iconic voice tells us what we have been missing. His ability to make the listener feel loved, just like the heroine in the song is Haricharan's undeniable strength. Shweta Mohan singing "Chakkare, en chakkarae", with her saccharine-laden voice is a delight to hear. Aswin Sathya is responsible for all the keyboard programming. Sai Rakshith is one fire playing the solo violin and the melody written here is so catchy, especially with the fast-paced second part in the interlude. Sandeep's constant bass support is commendable and cool.

The stanza is nothing we haven't heard before, but GV still manages to write a melody that feels warm and cozy. The recording engineers are Sanjai Arakkal at Sonic Island Studios, Kochi, Ashwin George John at Sounds Right Studio and Midhun Manoj at Soundtown Studios. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Jehovahson Alghar, Divine labs with assistant engineer Roopash Tiwari.

4. Shik Shik Shik

Music Composed, arranged, and programmed by Santhosh Narayanan

Performed by Dhee, Gana Muthu, Aditya Ravindran

Lyrics: Vivek, Madras Miran

Language: Tamil

Genre: Pop-fusion

Mood: Happy

Santhosh Narayanan gets down to business whatever the size, scale and popularity of a project, and it is dealt with and delivered with the same pomp and poise whether it is KALKI 2898 AD or Tata Coffee Grand's jingle. He understands a briefing to perfection and he executes it with excellence. Santhosh composes, does all the programming and arranges the keys, and percussions to give a solid production and sound design. The song starts with those cute voice samples and the moment you hear it you feel connected irrespective of age. This is a happy song for lovers of coffee and fans of music.

Dhee is a star performer and just like Santhosh she too takes up any project, any music style with equal ease and here she gives off a chirpy fun vibe with her delivery. The Keys are a constant presence along with Ganapathy's Indian percussions. "Shik Shik Shik" makes me wanna have my coffee right now and that is where the team shines, in acting as the perfect vehicle for a brand and message. My favourite line is "niram niram nirantharam" which is a brilliant blend of notes, singing, lyrics and arrangements, with Aditya Ravindran doing the additional vocal role in the background. Can you hear me clap for the vision, sound design and arrangements?

Just when I get over on line, we get "Humpty laaadi" followed by Gana Muthu's playful entry and interventions. We move away from Pop to Gaana music which is the core of Chennai and its vast popularity. Right through this segment we can still hear some beautifully arranged harmonies. After this Santhosh now shifts gears and heads into folk with his lead vocals and the genius of Santhosh comes to light, the bass guitars, with the keys and strings section as he sings " vaa, engakka maare va" is pure joy. Can you hear the apt lines " mannodu kalanthathu silathu maaruvathilla nee paaru". Vivek and Madras Miran shine as lyricists.

Like how Santhosh brilliantly does in his music, he gets that line "niram niram nirantharam" to play at the end of this folk segment giving us a great sense of fusion of multiple styles of music prevalent within Chennai and TN. Feel the Thavil sound in the outro and enjoy your sip of morning coffee. Are you awakened?

The tracks are mixed by Santhosh and Sriram Ravi @Future Tense Studios with Rupendar mastering the tracks and Meenakshi Santhosh as the musicians' coordinator.

5. Sikkimukki

Song Composed, Arranged and Produced by R Sanjay

Singer : Malvi Sundaresan

Lyrics: Ahamed Shyam

Language: Tamil

Genre: Blues-Pop

Mood: Romantic

It has been a while since I heard Malvi Sundaresan and it is such a delight listening to that magical tone and sweetness. This single is composed, arranged and produced by R Sanjay, with some amazing lyrics by Ahamed Shyam. Get a load of some stunning guitar riffs from Chris Jason and Napier Naveen's suave bass guitars. Unlike her usual style, Malvi sizzles with some sauciness added to the vocal performance. The song has a very Bluesy fabric and the tempo and melody are smooth with only David Joseph's bass drums, and hi-hat creating alternating energies.

The saxophone in the interlude is probably programmed by R Sanjay and to this Westernised melody, we get a very classical intervention by Manoj Kumar in the violin solo. Sushmita Narasimhan and Kiran Sravan complement beautifully on backing vocals. The ghamaka at the end of the line "thudikkum aasayodu" along with the violin playing the same notes is a beautiful segment. R Sanjay writes a beautiful set of notes that go " kakithangalil sollatha padam thaana" where the heart just swells in joy. This is where I felt like I was listening to Maestro's "Singalathu Chinna Kuyile".

The guitars, harmonies, bass and drums are brilliantly executed and arranged and I recommend that you listen to the fantastic live instrumentals using your headphones. The recording engineers are Avinash Sathish and Mani Rathnam with Sanjay doing the mixing and mastering. Kudos to the whole team including Gobinath SK on the direction of the video and Mullaiyarasi for playing the protagonist.

6. Poti

Composed and produced by Maalavika Sundar

Lyrics by Maalavika Sundar and Bharath Kumar

Vocals - Maalavika Sundar

Language: Tamil

Genre: Alt-Pop

Mood: Dance

Maalavika Sundar releases her first single from an upcoming EP. This is a fabulous song with semi-classical influences and Alt-Pop production. Maalavika writes the melody, performs the lead vocals, co-writes the lyrics with Bharath Kumar and produces the music. The underlying influence is Suddha Dhanyasi Raagam, and it is such an enjoyable melody. Vocally, Maalavika adds a lot of oomph and character and provides a pop flavour in her delivery.

The live instrumentalists are on fire like Akshay Yesodharan on lead guitars intervening and playing a stunning solo in the interlude. Reshwin Nishith is the bassist to add to the funk and Kuberan is the energy source on drums. The well-arranged horns section is thanks to some skilful programming. We have Aswin Raaja on keys and Livinston on live percussion. We feel like moving and grooving thanks to the scintillating production. The bass guitar solo is mindblowing in the second interlude.

Bharath and Maalavika write such relevant and witty lyrics and the central theme of selo-love with the phrase "unna nee nesi" sticks to the mind. The solo violin is played by Krishnaraj, and the tracks are mixed and mastered by Toby Joseph.

7. O Meri Jaan

Singers- Vijay Prakash,Chinmayi Sripada

Lyricist- Karunakaran

Music Composition & Arranged: D.Imman

Language: Tamil

Genre: Latin Pop

Mood: Romantic

It has been a while since we featured a D Imman, and this hummable melody starts with a Latin Pop, thanks to the acoustic guitar melody by Keba Jeremiah. He also plays the bass and electric guitars in the song. Vijay Prakash sings a Tamil song after a while, and I am serenaded by voice. He adds so much expression and emotion to the notes and lyrics, and the energy fills with all the lovely percussions conducted by Kaviraj. The musicians playing the percussion instruments are Babu, Pradeep, Raja, Balu, Manoj, Saravanan, David, Chiranjeevi and Azhagiri.

The melody is well written by Imman as he writes an elaborate anupallavi segment(Antara). I can hear the mild clarinet too the background adding to the beauty when Vijay Prakash sings " Kannale Kolluriye ..mella mella". Imman composes and arranges an exciting and beautiful interlude with the Duduk, percussion and some excellent strings played by Chennai Strings Orchestra. The vast set of Violins, Violas, Cellos and Upright Basses are played by talented instrumentalists, and the session is conducted by Yensone Bagyanathan. It is so refreshing to hear Chinamayi sing and when she is in her peak form, there are not many in the country like her.

The melody gets richer with lines like "mayanginen kadhal kondu , thayanginen sollida indru, aruginil nee thaan irundhalume", and Karunakakarn contributes by writing some heartfelt romantic lines. M Sundar Raj is the sound engineer assisted by R. Chakravarthy and I. Augustine. The tracks are recorded, mixed and mastered by Imman

8. Engu Poven

Composers: Rozario, Kiran Surath N

Singer, Lyricist: Rozario

Record producer: Kiran Surath N

Choir: EL FÉ by Roe Vincent

Language: Tamil

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

That is two songs in the same article, so congrats to Rozario. Here he composes a very gentle gentle pop song that oozes romance. The gospel-style vocal arrangements also work quite well for me. Kiran Surath N and Rozario compose the melody and Rozario delivers the lead vocals and writes the lyrics. Kudos to the EL FE Choir group conducted by Roe Vincent for executing such brilliant choral harmonies.

Napier Naveen is stunning on bass in the interlude, and we have the constant Piano running alongside. Kiran Surath is the producer so he must be appreciated for all the arrangements and music production. The melody written is beautiful and warms the heart like the line " oru maalai nerathil, aval kadha thuniayodeu, thol sayum pothellam, thudithene naan inge". Rozario is gentle and when he needs to up the ante he rises to the occasion in the high pitch notes too like " vaanam irulum pookal azhugum, avalum avanum ondrai inanindhirunthal". Joshu Satya provide ssupport on the electric guitar and the tracks are mastered by Biju James.

9. Vennilavu Saaral

Singers: Kapil Kapilan, Rakshita Suresh

Lyrics - Yugabharathi

Programmer: Aswin Sathya

Additional Programming: Narendar S

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

GV Prakash does a fabulous job in this album 'Amaran' and I rated this one of India's finest in 2024. This song is my second favourite in the album and here too we have some amazing playback singers on board to deliver the lead vocals. Kapil Kapilan is one of the most wanted vocalists in the movie space in the south and he shows why that is the case. The melody is beautifully crafted in the lines " aasai vandhu aasai theera aadukindra oonjal nee" and in equal vigour performed by Kapil.

Yughabharathi writes with such a great choice of words and the expression of love and admiration for the female protagonist is aptly carried by words. The female chorus singers create the humming bits and the performers are Punnya Pradeep, Swetha Ashok, Jerine Anna and Neethusha AC. All these remind us of the 2000s when music was loaded with the goodness of melodies and words. Rakshita Suresh is brilliant in her delivery with such grace and innocence in her voice and we get the same feeling both when we see Sai Pallavi on screen and hear Rakshita here. When the line "nenjamae yengum thedal nee" I felt like there was a hint of Raag Keeravani.

Akash S Menon plays the Mandolin and Saz in the interlude, Aswin Sathya handles the programming duties with Narendar S on all the additional programming. The choice of rhythms is an important highlight in this song, especially when we have the choral humming. The recording engineers are Shiju Ediyatheril, Sanjai Arakkal, Sreerag Suresh, Aswin George John and Lijesh Kumar TK. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Jehovahson Alghar, Divine labs.

10. Kadhale Kadhale

Music Composed, Arranged & Programmed By Vishal Chandrashekhar

Singer: Kapil Kapilan

Lyrics: Viyan Pugazhendhi

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

Vishal Chandrasekhar is dependable, and if you want proof of that, listen to this melody and by the end of 3 minutes you just might agree with me. The man who deserved a National Award for his songs in the album "Sita Ramam" in 2023 composed, programmed and arranged this beautiful song. Kapil Kapilan is the male vocalist for this and he beautifies this even further. The Piano starts playing gently and the female chorus leads the way in the intro with singers like Sriradha Bharath, Surabhi Sathish and Kavitha Ilango.

Thirucherai Karthik intervenes with his violin solo, and the melody has traces of Abheri Ragam, and probably some Karaharapriya and Reethigowla as well. The male backing vocalists are Vikram Pitty, Aravind Annest and Shibi Srinivasan. The interlude has a beautiful melody written and played by Karthik on the Violin and Deepak Chander does all the additional programming. Chris Jason plays the acoustic guitar as the rhythm guitar. While the electric guitar is played by Deepak. I love the line "vaanmazhai polave thoovidum kadhale" thanks to Viyan Pugazhendhi's words and Vishal's notes.

All the choral arrangements are apt and conducted to perfection by Sinduri Vishal. The recording engineers are Jai Ganesh (The Sound Smith), Hariharan (20db Soundstudios), with assistance from Udhayanidhi Kumar, Anirudh S, Deepak Chander And Sundar Sivaramakrishnan. The tracks are mixed by Jai Ganesh and mastered by  AM Rahmathullah.

11. Adiye Alangaari

Song Composed and Arranged by Justin Prabhakaran

Singers: Krishnaraj, Ananya Bhat

Lyrics: Uma Devi

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

It has been a while since we heard anything from Justin Prabhakaran, and so when he is back with a song like this it feels like he has picked off from where he left. This beautiful folkish melody has all elements working in its favour. The melody written by Justin feels like a bit of Raag Karaharapriya to me. Ananya Bhat and Krishnaraj are the lead vocalists and Uma Devi pens the lyrics. P Vijay Ananth plays the flute solo, and all the enjoyable percussions are played by Sruthiraj. I love the line "iru varai aadukalum thulli vilayadiduthe", with lyrics, melody and singing coming together in stunning style.

Sruthiraj plays the the pipe stick, talking drum, Kanjira, duff and Dolak and the percussions are quite creative and effective with backing vocals in the interlude. The backing vocalists are Sam P Keerthan, Balaji Sri, Sugandh Shekar, Kaushik Sridharan, Priya Prakash, Karpagam, Hemambiga and Sriradha Bharath. Krishnaraj's voice feels fresh and nice, especially for a folkish melody. Balaji plays the solo violin, Naveen Napier is the bassist and all the additional programming is done by Sebastian Sathish. Ananya is magical in the stanza and partly it is because we have some beautiful notes written by Justin. The arrangements of the flute, keys, rhythms and harmonies are all outstanding elements.

The recording engineers are Kashyap Rammohan (2barq), Biju James (Studio Uno), mixing is done by Balu Thankachan (20db Black) and mastering by Gethin John At Hafod Mastering, Wales, UK.

12. Nilai

Song Composed, Written, Produced and Sung by Sreekanth Hariharan

Voiceover by Ziya Hadhijath

Additional Production by Keshav Vinod

Language: Tamil

Genre: Electronic Pop

Mood: Romantic

This fabulous playback singer changes roles and comes to showcase his abilities as a songwriter. The melody and lyrics are written by Sreekanth Hariharan, and he impresses within seconds as a choral intro begins the proceedings. Sreekanth's high-pitch delivery is exemplary and feels like a love anthem. I love the accompanying keys and rhythms as this feels like an energetic electronic pop. Keshav Vinod does all the additional production with Sreekanth handling the major production and sound design of this single.

I do see a lot of AR Rahman influences in this song, especially with the latter's work in albums like " O Kadhal Kanmani". A lot of the singing that he does in the falsetto mode and Sreekanth executes it with style. The spoken poetry is by Ziya Hadhijath that we hear in the interlude. I love what follows with SReekanth singing " ninaivaaki pogum, namai vittu pogum" with some artistically performed ghamakas. I love the layers of vocals that we are introduced to and even with a very short stanza we are still treated to some endearing music. The tracks are mixed by Sreekanth and Manirathnam with the latter handling the mastering.

13. Kadhal Serkaadho

Vocals, Composition, Lyrics by: Sam Vishal

Produced by : Marshall Robinson

Language: Tamil

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Marshall Robinson is riding a high, with excellent indie singles on the trot. Sam Vishal whose vocal performances have been good in various projects comes to deliver this catchy electronic pop single, and he has also composed this enjoyable melody.  Keba Jeremiah plays the acoustic, electric and bass guitars, with Sam's voice sounding like a gentle breeze on a pleasant day. I love the melody written by Sam. "Kaatru un vassam thedi, pookkal unai serume, kannal en nenjai koythai, naanum enna seiyveno". Sam also writes the lyrics for this one.

The additional arrangements on keys, rhythms and synths work very well giving the song a wonderful soundscape. Clinton Robinson plays the additional keyboards and we get a sense of the fabulous production by Marshall, when we get to the interlude as well with that nice humming. Marshall is the additional vocalist. Enjoy some insane keys on display in the interlude. Rupendar Venkatesh is the mixing and mastering engineer and the recording engineer is Hariharan at 20db Studios.

14. Paal Nila

Composed, arranged & produced by Rozario

Singers: Rozario & Shilvi Sharon

Lyrics: Pa Iniyavan

Language: Tamil

Genre: Pop

Mood: Trippy

Rozario has been on a roll releasing some catchy indie music in consecutive months and here is one I loved. The song is composed, arranged and produced by Rozario with lead vocals featuring Shilvi Sharon and Rozario. He sings with a laidback attitude almost like being in an inebriated state. The lyrics are penned by Pa Iniyavan. The keys and rhythms are all programmed to give a trippy feeling, and when SHilvi joins in with her scat-singing, we are enamoured with her sensual and glamorous delivery.

The skill in executing her lines is quite demanding but Shilvi Sharon delivers with 100% efficacy and style. Rozario plays the bass guitar and we have all the tracks being mixed and mastered by Sree Hari, with Abin Ponnachan as the recording engineer at Studio Uno Records.

15. Podu Mike

Performed by: Killa K, Yung Raja

Written by: Killa K, Yung Raja

Produced by: X Wrld

Language: Tamil

Genre: Gaana

Mood: Dance

Like last month's "Kaathu Mela" by Paal Dabba and OfRo, we have another blast of a gana song with Killa K and Yung Raja writing and performing. The lyrics are excellent and the delivery style is refreshing. This is one song to play, enjoy, and dance to. X Wrld is the music producer and the mix of whistles, Dholak, backing vocals and all other programming creates a perfect concoction.

The tempo alters in the verse and the moves faster in the chorus segment. Kudos to the bunch for this simple and fun single. Akash Shravan is the mix/master engineer.

16. Boy Bestie

Composed, Arranged & Programmed by Osho Venkat

Lyrics - Ridhun Sagar

Singer - Osho Venkat

Language: Tamil

Genre: Electronic Pop

Mood: Dance

The solo electric violin, the woodwinds and the overall electronic pop style made me wonder if this was a S Thaman composition and production. Osho Venkat is a talented young musician and he has composed, arranged and produced music for this song. Pawan plays the electric violin, Ragava is on the flute, and the energetic Afro percussion comes from Krishna Kishore. Rishun Sagar is the lyricist.

The interlude has the electric violin and we have the female vocalists Padmaja Sreenivasan and Sanjana Prashant on swaras. The similarity to some of Thaman's latest songs in Telugu and Tamil is uncanny, albeit we find this song interesting. Osho is the lead vocalist and the female humming we hear is that of Sanjana. Shubashree Vinay is on electric guitars and Monty plays the acoustic guitars in the outro. We also get to hear fragments of the acoustic violin played by Feny. The music adviser is Tanish Krishna. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Pukraj Sonkar, and the recording engineers are Biju, Adarsh Narayanan, Thanushri and Naresh.
