Here are the best songs released in India across languages and genres for the week ending    4th May 2025

1. Edharkaga Marupadi

Singer: Punya Selva

Composed, arranged and produced by Santhosh Narayanan

Lyricist: Vivek

Language: Tamil

Genre: Ballad

Mood: Pathos

When the teaser was released, there was this one moment as Pooja Hegde and Suriya sit on the banks of a river and the latter promises a life of peace and happiness. Pooja agrees to marry him and a solo violin comes along like oxygen breathing life into a moment already full of life, making this moment eternal and ethereal. Not many in the world can be even mentioned in the same sentence as Maestro Ilaiyaraja me, but this solo violin piece composed by Santhosh Narayanan and played by Manoj is heavenly and maybe even Ilaiyaraja would nod his head to that in approval. The melody somehow reminds me of Maestro's "Thalaatu Maari Ponadhey" from the album "Unnai Naan Sandithen'

The solo piece now has a song and ever since many like me heard this, we are all enamoured by the composition and the vocals by a new artist Punya Selva. The Piano and the upright bass add some more flavour to the song's existing melancholy. This whole melody that lasts 30 seconds feels like a lifetime. Punya Selva delivers the melody with such perfect restraint, and sadness bordering on desperation. The magic continues with that amazing line "Amaidhi adaintha kadalil puyalum varudha, avanin ninaivu, valiyil padaitha virudha, theelaga naal marudha" with that sensational set of notes written and equally well executed by Punya in the end.

Kudos to Vivek for writing the intense and loaded lines, and this is where I feel Tamil lyricists have truly resuscitated something that was facing morbid times in the earlier decade.  The interlude is once again the same Violin melody but accompanied now by a strings section and Piano. The strings section is written by Karthik Manickavasagam. I sense a small lag between the solo violin and the background strings, but is it intended because the lovers' hearts skip a beat when they see each other The woodwinds just before the beginning of the first stanza are calming and when Punya starts her line, the flowy Pianos play alongside "Neeketta Punnagai", as if the notes are like Suriya's smile, incessant and elevating. Punya is flawless in delivering every minute emotion while singing the lines, on top of giving a remarkable tone and texture to the melody.

The pathos builds on further in the second interlude with that soulful heart-wrenching humming by Ananthu and once that ends Santhosh throws a new surprise with a completely different stanza. He not only goes all guns blazing in his whacky creativity but also goes the distance in giving music lovers something fresh, heartfelt and everlasting like this song. The second stanza has a different mood, like a recovery from all of the protagonist's sadness and that is what I feel when I hear "Kadhal alayil oru nadhiyena aadi magizhden, nyana karaiyil , vandhu ezhunthaval eeram thurandhu vitten" thanks to Vivek's in-sync lyrics as well.

Punya, in her ability to deliver the tough notes, Vivek in his immersive writing and Santhosh in his desire and gifted abilities to write these notes all come together beautifully in "En thadagame, En Kalabame, En Vivadhame, Un Vilasame". The song in its overall tone reminds me of "Kannamma" from 'Kaala'.

2. Neend

Songwriters: Aman Moroney, Shaurya Saxena, Mihir Thatte

Produced & Arranged by Aman Moroney

Language: Hindi

Genre: Semi-classical Pop fusion

Mood: Uplifting

Aman Moroney is one fabulous mentor and producer who I have featured more than a few times and he takes one more step further, as he composes and writes this song along with Shaurya Saxena and Mihir Thatte. The lead vocals are by Shaurya while Aman handles the majestic-sounding arrangements and production. The melody probably has some strains of Khamaaj Thaat and we feel it slowly entering our system.

The keys and synths are handles by AMan and when Shaurya sings " Neend mujhe kyun kyun nahi, aati nahi", the helplessness of the protagonist can be felt. Shaurya starts slow and stead and lets you in on a few showy flashes of brilliance as he produces excellent harkatein on the phrase "aati nahi". We also get a glimpse of the violin, played by Aman. He pulls you deep as the mind gets captivated by the sound of the violin, like falling into an abyss of insomnia.

A shift of moods happens now with the electric guitar and the introduction of the Tabla in the second verse. Vaibhav Duratkar plays the Tabla and Aman plays the guitars. Are you entertained when Shaurya sings " Jaise bechaini ki leher hai" with that beautiful vibrato in the end? Hardik Verma is exceptional in this classical-sounding solo on the Sitar and maybe there were traces of Raag Baageshree here. Shaurya is in prime form in the high-pitched lines singing " Na sune hain koye manwa ki baat, suna mann ka angna".

I am left with a few tears as Shaurya ends singing " dhoop tu, chhav bhi sajnaa". This is a fantastic song which brings together excellent vocals, songwriting and music production skills together. Aman Moroney does the mixing and mastering and the recording engineers are Soumya Saksham and Aman.

3. Is It Okay?

Composed, Written, Sung by Amira Gill & Anahita Dawar

Song produced and arranged by Amrit Ramnath

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Mild Pathos

Too many cooks spoil the broth! But when many fantastic musicians come together what gets cooked is delicious and irresistible, like this one! Amira Gill, a terrific vocalist, composes this gentle melody with a lot of twists and turns in the chord progression along with Anahita Dawar. These two write the lyrics and touch the heart and a nerve or two. Akshay Yeshodharan is blessed with some skilful fingers and puts that to use in the guitar riffs in the intro.

The singing is haunting, for lack of a stronger word and immediately Amira and Anahita strike you with words of ironical juxtaposition like "The Lights go off and the Cake is lit". The power of vocals, and the efficacy of musical production all work well when you hear lines and you can visualise the imagery. The mild sadness is evident in "You wished for me but you wished too late"

How a singer can transform emotions with just a mild tweak also is here for us to see when we hear the chorus "Is it Okay that I'll never be okay". The mood moves from a little bit of despair to better strength and reparation. Amira and Anahit play "with" words, and you can see the usage of the word "with" in so many ways in successive lines " With it, With you With her, Without You". The arrangements and music production is by the talented Amrit Ramnath who smartly keeps things mild and allows the words and vocals to dominate proceedings.

When we get to the next verse we get some more anointment as the harmonies and strings section support appears. Nitin Muralikrisha does all the additional production, with the Ukulele played by Akshay. The writing gets even more vivid and depicts one frame after frame of this scene playing out in front of our eyes. "The lights come on and her bleached brown hai, All on my pillow, it's my side of the bed, Why's she wearing all my clothes?"

Like the great STing once said, songs need to have a bridge section, and that is where a change of mod happens in a song. Amira and Anahit giev that revival story of the protagonist making up her mind and moving on with the most delicious notes here in "Burn my skin, You'll never win, Ill rather die than be your friend". Nitin does the mixing and mastering with Hari as the recording engineer at 20db Studios, Chennai.

4. Tu Jo Mila Hai

Singer: Maanuni

Composed by: Maanuni, Nilotpal Sinha

Lyrics: Niilotpal Sinha

Arranged and Produced by: Nilotpal Sinha

Language: Hindi

Genre:

Mood: Romantic

Some fine talent is working their magic here as Maanuni and Nilotpal Sinha come together and create this gentle heart warmer. We get a doze of some mild Jazz as Sanket Pahurkar on drums and the Keys start playing. It only takes seconds in the verse, with Maanuni's fabulous vocals to grab all the attention. The melody is written by Maanuni and Nilotpal, with the latter writing the lyrics and magnificently producing and getting the arrangements spot on.

She creates such an impact and just like she sings " Aasmaan mein kuch toh Naya Hai", something is amazing in the sky and air around when we hear her. There is such an element of sensuality and romanticism in the writing and vocals when she sings " Aa Zara, rukh kar kabhi, Dekh le Jee Bhar ke". The amount of creative twists and turns she adds to every note and phrase is fantastic, which is expected of a glorified singer like Maanuni. We also hear the faint but effective backing vocals thanks to Pratiksha Kale and Maanuni who work on that.

The Trumpets are playing mildly in the interlude giving the Jazz flavours even more authenticity and the mood remains one of love and tenderness. Kudos to Nilotpal for the arrangements. We can see her gratitude in her words and tone "Kaise Tu Mila Hai" and the bridge section continues to showcase the duo of Nilotpal and Maanuni in great light as fine composers here. The Trumpet, Keys, drums and harmonies simply elevate the song multifold. Trihangku Lahkar is the mix/master engineer, assisted by Bidyut Jyoti Mohan. The recording engineers are Pankaj Borah, Pranjal Borah and Adhithya Sivakumar at Neo Sound Studio.

5. Faasle

Composed & Arranged by Sid Paul

Singers: Garvit Soni, Priyansh Srivastava

Lyrics - Rishi Pathak

Music Arrangers: Khush Jaggi, Sid Paul

Language: Hindi

Genre: Rock

Mood: Energetic

Welcome to some pleasing Hind Rock music, as Sid Paul composes and arranges this track. I have been a fan of the duo Garvit Soni and Priyansh Srivastava, and they enthral us with their classical-dipped vocals. Sid on guitars and Jignesh Patel, the drummer, inject the goodness of rock music. The Piano flows like an endless stream, and when we get towards the chorus, the energy is pushed up multiple notches.

I love the lines " Jaane kitne dil guzaare hain, teri yaadon ke sahaare, neend ke khwaabon se faasle faasle" with Rishi Pathak penning the words and Sid and Kushu Jaggi handling all the arrangements. Garvit and Priyansh are fantastic vocalists with their identifiable styles, and kudos to Sid Paul for getting these performers on board. They bring the Hindustani-styled harkatein in the verses which adds beauty to the melody. I cannot stop playing this line on a loop for the excellent melody, warm words and the execution "Chalein Kuch kadmon ka safar, aise mein kat jaye umar, thaame tu mera haat agar".

The arrangements are perfectly imbibed with minimal intervention during the verses and only add weight to the chorus. I do sense some Khamaj Thaat influences in the melody. Bhaskar Sarma mixed and mastered the tracks.

6. Pariah

Lyrics, Composition and vocals: Aadya Jaswal

Music Produced by Barun Sinha and Suraj Sarawagi

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Contemplative

I really enjoyed listening to this album 'Sanctuary' by Aadya Jaswal and I recommend that English music lovers stream and try out this pop album. This is my favourite track from the album and it is melodically, vocally and production-wise also the most memorable song in the album. The Keys start punching in along with the energetic drums. The music in this album is produced by Barun Sinha and Suraj Sarawagi with the latter on electric guitars and the former on bass guitars and the xylophone.

Aadya writes so beautifully as if she is painting a picture right in front of our eyes. She sings " Spend your day in the sun, and your evening in the rain, your mornings covered up in bed, and the dreams they'll come to you". It all feels like we are experiencing these things just as we hear her sing and that is how effective her writing is. Aadya writes the melody, and lyrics and performs the lead vocals in all the songs of the album. The interlude with her humming "woah woah oh" gives off such a pleasant feeling thanks to her vocals which remain, playful and innocent. Rihart Keith plays the Violin and Adhiraj Mustafi is the drummer.

I hear a mild sound of the Harmonica and Trumpets in the background during this segment and beyond decorating the pauses between phrases like "Nobody asked you to listen" and "Nobody told you to try", with that faint solo violin accompanying too. Suraj, Barun and Anant Dayal handle the vocal production as well. The scat singing, just ahead of the bridge section, catches your attention and tells you a whole lot about Aadya's abilities. The tracks are mixed by Barun Sinha and mastered by Julian Lowe. Rohit Gupta plays the trumpet, Liza Mathew is involved in the backing vocals.

7. Tu Yahaan

Vocals: Anubha Kaul, Raghav M Kumar

Composed and Produced by: RAGHAV & ARJUN

Lyrics: Maayank Murti, Raghav & Arjun

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Mild Pathos

I have been fond of Raghav & Arjun for a while now, with their exciting line of music. So when this song was released I was eager and boy have they delivered. Anubha Kaul is one superlative vocalist and she brings on her A-game. Veljon Noronha's stylish rhythm guitar plays along with Raghav's pacifying vocals. It all looks and sounds fine but the wonderment arrives when the melody takes a shift for the better in the lines in the pre-chorus and chorus segment. "Tere hone na Hone, Ki Nahi yeh baat hai, Tu Ho Na ho, teri yaadon mein hi tera saath, Tu Yaahan", is magically crafted.

The lyrics are penned by Mayank Murti and Raghav & Arjun which beautifully fit the theme of the song, of love and longing. The parts performed by Anubha are loaded with grace and exquisite style. The lower notes are an absolute delight fm when she performs them. Veljon comes along and also sizzles on the electric guitar in the background with that mild funk on bass.

I love the chord progression in the bridge and we suddenly come to a point where the background drums go silent and Raghav seeks your undying attention on the high notes " Chaand Hai taare Bhi Hai, Subah Ko Rok Lena Tu Ab Kahin". Enjoy the amazingly delivered outro with Raghav and Anubha performing together, "Tu Yaahan..Tu Yahaan". Prathamesh Dudhane is the mixing and mastering engineer, and Krina Shah is the recording engineer.

8. Aazhiye

Composed, Arranged and Produced by Nivas K Prasanna

Singers: Naresh Iyer, Hevin Booster, Nithyashree venkataramanan, Rose Veronica

Rap Vocals: Deepti Reddy

Lyrics: Mohanrajan; Deepti Reddy

Language: Tamil

Genre: Hip-Hop/Pop

Mood: Romantic

Nivas K Prasanna always creates songs that offer something fresh and enjoyable, and I get quite excited when I am about to listen to his compositions. We have Naresh Iyer performing the male lead vocals and it is so refreshing to hear this wonderful playback singer in good form after a long time. One must give credit to Nivas for offering a worthwhile song that lets Naresh express and exhibit his potential. Nivas has composed, arranged and produced the music with additional sound design by Hevin Booster.

The rhythms, tempo and tone take us back to the 2000s when popular film music under AR Rahman and Harris Jayaraj sounded like this. The whole fabric with the guitars by Keba Jeremiah, and rhythms also makes me feel like I am listening to calypso and Reggae music. The chorus singers are Shenbagaraj, Santhosh Hariharan, Aravind Srinivas, Rakshita Suresh and Aparna Harikumar. The lead vocalists have some more amazing performers on board like Nithyashree Venkataramanan, Rose Veronica and Hevin.

The introduction of Hip-Hop is excellent and Deepti Reddy writes and performs this segment with zest and style. Usually, some of the hip-hop in the non-indie space comes off as rushed and under-cooked but here we have something that stands out. I love the writing and Deepti's delivery " By the beach, by the sun in the backyard, don't worry about life, it ain't that hard. No point worryin, take your own time, no point hurryin". The song in all its elements is meant to boost spirits thanks also to Mohan Rajan's lyrics like "Nejukulla oru sogam, theva illa endha naalum".

The verse that shows up after the hip-hop segment is when Nithyashree shines in all the Altos lines. Keba goes in full fire mode towards the outro on his electric guitar solo and that along with all the harmonies and groovy rhythms and percussions sounds exhilarating. Alex Samuel Jenito; Nirmal JP are the Executive Producers and Malvi Sundaresan is the Music Supervisor. The tracks are mixed and mastered by K.S.Maniratnam at The Mystic's Room.

9. Main Sach Kahun

Written, composed and performed by Last Minute India

Produced by Swarup Chattopadhyay

Language: Hindi

Genre: Rock

Mood: Energetic

Nope, this is not a song I added to this week's playlist at the Last Minute. The band has been featured a few times by me and here they are with another splendid show of rock music. The quintet delivers a killer blow if I have to tell the truth ( Main Sach Khun To). Abdul Shaikh enthrals us with his vocals and the rhythm guitars in the background keep following all the way thanks to Bhumit Gor. I love Abdul's expression and emotion in his delivery.

When we hear Abdul, it sounds and feels like Dr. Palash Sen of the legendary Rock/Pop band 'Euphoria'. I feel his agony and pain when Abdul sings "Mai karta koshishein hazar, par na hota kuch sahi' along with the guitars and drums by Samaksh. The songwriter of the band is Subodh and he does a fine job of adding intricacies to the melody and meaning in the lyrics. The lead guitarist, Austin Furtado, comes on to add his flavours and let the song sizzle away. The song reminds me of another famous indie song called "Dhooba Dhooba" by the band Silk Route.

The music is produced by Swarup Chattopadhyay. Jagdish Bhandge does the mixing at Apostrophe Studios, Nashik. The tracks are mastered by Gethin John at Hafod Mastering, Wales. Listen and enjoy the aalaap by Abdul as he goes all out and does an Arijit Singh-issue exhibition in the outro.

10. Iragey

Music Composed, Arranged and Produced by Sean Roldan

Singer: Vijay Yesudas

Lyrics: Mohan Rajan

Music Production: Ashwin Raja

Language: Tamil

Genre: Pop

Mood: Elevating

I just featured this album on my IG page with a full album review. Sean Roldan does a delightful job once again with 'Tourist Family'. Other than the 'Mugai Mazhai' which I already covered in my weeklies, this is another fantastic song that deserves much love and appreciation. Rithu Vysakh plays the strings and makes you hypnotised straightaway in the intro. The melody is composed by Sean and the music is produced by Ashwin Raja. The dream combo of Sean and Mohan Rajan as the lyricist works like magic once again in this album.

The magical soothing voice of Vijay Yesudas takes you back to the 1980s and 1990s when his father ruled our hearts and the accompanying guitar riffs and strings are just perfect for creating a setting of musically rich night. The arrangements on the strings section need a special mention because at times they play the same melody right behind Vijay's lines e.g. when he sings "Uthirum iragin mounam athunil, paravai pogum thooram" and then Rithu intervenes with his mild melody after "Ninaithu Naanum Enathu Padhai Thodaruthey".

Sean, Vijay, Ashwin and Mohan all unite to create magic and magnetism with "Thodakkam Thodakkam illai, Anbe, Mudibum Mudivum Illai Nenje" with intervening humming bits by Sean. The stanza is wonderfully scripted as we hear "nizhalena thodarum nera kadanthu ponathe". Aswin George John has done the recording, mixing and mastering with sound Engineer Sabari Bharathi Krishna.

11. Prathi Kshanam

Concept & Arrangements: Akhil Chandra

Singers: Shweta Mohan, Akhil Chandra

Music Composer: Akhil Chandra

Lyrics: Yashwanth Aluru

Music Produced by: Jayaram

Language: Telugu

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

Akhil Chandra handles the reins here with a concept, melody composition, and arrangements for this delightful light music track. Chennai Strings plays the strings section in the intro with Violoas by Venkata Ramana, Shiva Prasad, Fagon, Vignesh, Nandini, Balaji, Yenzone and Chandru. The Cellists are Dinesh, Hariesh Kumar and Vijayendran, Balaji and Lakshmikanth play the Double Bass, and the mesmerising solo Violin by Shiva Prasad.

Yugandhar's flute solo joins in along with Shweta Mohan's faint asap. Is there some influence of Raag Bilawal or Bihag? Maybe! Akhil Chandra delivers the opening lines, and soon, the two lead vocalists take control with some excellent singing. The use of the Clarinet and keys is all quite enticing. The interlude has this tete-a-tete between the Flute and the Violin and it all becomes grander with Shweta's humming and the strings section. Yashwanth Aluru pens the lyrics

The melody that we hear in the stanza is excellently composed by Akhil and Jayaram's music production deserves appreciation. Interestingly I found out that Akhil was a semi-finalist at the Super Singer Telugu Reality show. Akhil does splendidly to try and match up to the giant opposite him called Shweta. His lines are delivered with great love and tenderness and also exhibits a wide vocal range. Akhil tells me that the song's melody has majorly some Kalyani Ragam influences with a mix of Ragas as well intertwined.

The tracks are recorded by Vishnu Shankar at Sound Town Studios, Chennai, Bharadwaj Krishna SK Studios, Hyderabad, and Adarsh Narayanan (Assisted by Thanushree, Tharun, Subash) at Studio Uno. The mastering is done by Srinath Komanduri, Haritha Chitta does the video illustration and animation. The scratch track was sung by Nadapriya

12. Grey with a hint of Yellow

Written, composed & performed by: Saroj Kashyap

Produced, mixed & mastered by: Varun Murali at The Red Music Box

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Happy

Saroj Kashyap isn't an artist who wants to rest peacefully on her laurels and that is why she keeps trying new things and creation fresh styles. I have featured her a few times and this whole re-invention phase will have bigger payoffs sooner rather than later. The song is written, performed and composed by Saroj with music production by Varun Murali. Saroj is capable as a vocalist and it is only to her benefits that she demonstrates all the facets of that gift every time.

The background is decorated with acoustic guitars, drums, and harmonies, and Varun ensures none of that takes away from Saroj's mesmerism. Listen to the chorus segment and what she does to the word yellow with that mild vibrato that seems very hard to fathom and even harder to recreate. The melody is simple and not something that demands too much from the listener. Saroj rather depends on her vocals and writing to captivate us and it works just fine.

She writes so relevant in this day of social media hustle and bustle, with lines like " Be my slave, Never sleep at night, Set up your phone, Now turn and face the light". The tracks are mixed and mastered by Varun at The Red Music Box. The concept of the video and the editing is done by Saroj and Shilpa N.
