Here are the best songs released in India across languages and genres for the week ending    25th May 2025

1. Diya Diya

Composed, Arranged and Produced by Nivas K Prasanna

Singer: Sid Sriram & Nivas K Prasanna

Lyrics: Karthik Netha

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music/Pop

Mood: Romantic

This is the second song from the album "Bun Butter Jam", that I am featuring here, so it is some fabulous work by a composer I like Nivas K Prasanna. He is one shining light and a hope for the future of Kollywood. This song is composed, arranged and produced by him and he gets Sid Sriram to deliver the lead vocals. Navin Iyer makes it a ravishing intro on his flute solo with the riffs on guitars by Keba Jeremiah. It immediately takes us to the era of AR Rahman and Harris Jeyaraj of 2000s.

It makes me think of this one song in particular, 'ENnamo ENnamo pidichirukku' from 'Saamy'. Sid sings in the lower vocal registers and he does quite well in this Baritonish husk. There are probably shades of Abheri Ragam. Karthik Netha writes these very heartwarming romantic lines " Thanneeril vishum mazhaiyay, ennodu neeyum  inaindhai". When I hear this I am also tempted to recall this other beautiful song "Unna Partha Pinbu Naan" from the album 'Kadhal Mannan'.

Things get fiery with Nivas singing the main title line "Diya Diya Oh Aarathiya" and we get some stunning basslines by John Praveen. KA SuryaHari does all the additional programming and he amps up with some fine rhythms. The interlude is in blitzkrieg mode as the electric violin solo by Ananthakrishnan goes head-on with Navin's flute. It is a very enjoyable segment of the song and this is where Nivas shines, telling us that he came to write these extended melodies with interludes like the songs of 2 decades ago.

The stanza is just another fantastic movement of the melody with Sid Nivas and Karthik combining to give us lines like "Or ilai mel, peroli pol, nee vizhundhai, naan vidinthen" and "Maayavizhi Kattum Vazhi, Poguthadi kaathal Nadhi Vaa". The latter is just a mesmerising play of notes. The music supervisor is Alex Samuel Jenito, the tracks are mixed and mastered by Hevin Booster. KS Maniratnam is the recording engineer at The Mystic Rooms.

2. Dholaa

Vocals: Mame Khan, Anand Bhaskar

Lyrics Ginny Diwan

Produced by Ajay Jayanthi

Language: Hindi

Genre: Folk-Rock fusion

Mood: Energetic

A band whose music I have loved right from the day I started my music journey of music journalism, is Anand Bhaskar Collective. They haev everything one can dream of, a fabulous front man in Anand Bhaskar, some gifted instrumentalists/producers in Ajay jayanthi and Hrishi Giridhar, a stylish bassist in Neelkanth Patel and an energetic drummer in Shishir Tao. This song is a delightful fusion of folk music and mesmerising pop-rock making the listener land up in seventh heaven.

Once we head towards the chorus segment after Mame Khan and Anand collectively deliver the lines "Too naa jaa", the keys and synths just flow. We have Ajay Banerjee on the Piano and Ginny Diwan writing the lyrics. The guitars and drums create a wave that will submerge you thanks to Hrishi's sizzling electric guitars. Ajay intervenes with a solo Violin performance in the interlude. This segment has a fine melody written for the violin, and Ajay is accompanied by some snazzy basslines featuring Neelkanth, in the verse that follows Mame Khan touches your heart with the rawness of his tone and elegance in his delivery.

Shishir and Ajay never engage to take any attention away from the lead vocals as they play mildly in the background. The harkatein by Mame is endearing and we surrender to this man's voice in lines like "Nainon mein hai khaare, peed too jo daare". If you pay attention, just before the bridge section, Neelkanth is oozing style on bass. The calmness that follows is where a brief melody on the Piano lets you breathe and soak in the song's beauty. Ajay and Hrishi know how to end things as they take turns and play the affable little melody. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Keshav Dhar. The video is directed and edited by Smritim Dutta.

3. Chal Chhod Na Yaar

Singers - Siddharth Mahadevan, Varun Jain & Shashwat Singh

Music - Shor Police (Clinton Cerejo & Bianca Gomes)

Lyricist - Sudeep Naik

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop-Rock

Mood: Happy

Pune Highway is a new movie, and although I am not yet sure if I want to see it in theatres, I am excited about the music album, which was composed and produced by the dependable duo of Clinton Cerejo and Bianca Gomes, a.k.a. Shor Police. Bhushan CHitnis opens with his acoustic guitars, sounding like a stream of water, and this rhythm guitar then leads on to a stunning lead guitar solo. You cannot judge a book by its cover, but I feel you can judge a song by intro intro!

The song features 3 protagonists singing lines and telling memorable stories from the past. The lead vocalists are Siddharth, Varun and Shashwat and thankfully they all are singers with distinct tones and styles, making this song and scene believable. The way the singers tell "Chal Chhod Na Yaar" reminds us that these 4 words depict the art of moving on. Shor Police once again make a song sound flamboyant and hummable with their intricate writing and efficiency in sound design and production. The harmonies and guitars accompanying the breaks every time they sing "Chal Chhod Na Yaar" are very engaging. Sudeep Naik must be congratulated for such playful and interesting lyrics.

Listen to the lines "Raat ko red light pe tokhi tu Car Oh No!, Oh Kaam tera Badnaam mera". The chord progression is just beautiful here and you want to keep playing this line again and again, with the vocalists elevating it even further. Bhushan is in scintillating form playing the electric guitars towards the outro and the whole song will definitely become an anthem of a friends reunion setup. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Prathmesh Dudhane at Bombay Live Studios.

4. Who will stand beside you?

Music, Lyrics and Produced by Squarez Attached

Language: English

Genre: Rock

Mood: Energetic

I heard this song out of the blue, with no idea about the artists, or the band and what a pleasant surprise it was! I can assure you that I was impressed by Squarely, and attached to the guitars and vocals. This 5 member Rock act from Delhi has Neel Bhuyan and Priyanka Nongkhlaw on lead vocals, Nawin Rai on drums, and Gaurav Bhuyan on guitars. These musicians are from India's musically rich parts like Shillong, Guwahati, Kohima and Darjeeling. Bijoy Sarkar plays Bass guitar in this song.

The guitars in the intro are like arrows that strike with precision and power and the bass guitar breathes fire like a dragon. When you have no way to fight these stunning elements of live instrumental music, don't resist but just surrender to the beauty. Neel and Priyanka are just so delicate and deadly at the same time delivering their lines and the Rock Gods will be happy listening to such untainted sounds.

The music lyrics and music production are all done by the band, with Karta as the sound engineer. The way the two lead vocalists sing in unison is another unforgettable highlight in the verses. The tremors are mild, but they get intense at the chorus segment as they sing "Who will stand beside you" to which Gauarv responds with that sizzling electric guitar intervention. The basslines are arranged by Haurav and played by Bijoy. The bride that follows feels fresh and calm in comparison as the lines go "What on earth am I doing? Aimlesslessly wandering, Am I even worth it" with some sensational vibrato by Priyanka and both Neel and Priyanka singing on two different Octaves.

The Keys, bass and drums provide further instrumental relief as this rock zone shifts gears more than a few times and they all sound timely. The energy and vocal quality are breathtaking and I am excited to hear the rest of the album released by the band, it is called "Horizon-Kshitij". The tracks are mixed and mastrered by Keshav Dhar.

5. Amrita

Music Composer & Songwriter: Varun Nimbolkar

Vocals: Sai Shreya

Language:

Genre: Classical Fusion

Mood: Pathos

Varun Nimbolar has been featured a few times for imbibing fantastic classical Indian music through the fusion format. He is an exponent of the Sitar and like his prior works, he has written, composed and produced this gentle giant called 'Amrita'. This fusion of styles from the Western and Indian regions is an ode to the passion of love and Sai Shreya lends her voice for this. The electric guitars and bass guitars are loading up like magazines ready to fire, and then a soothing voice takes the heartbeat down multiple notches. Sai Shreya delivers the lines like a woman suffering from the pain and misery of a lover going far away.

Varun couldn't have sent the message this loud and clear without the use of Raag Charukeshi and all its accompanying melancholy. The lead guitar now turns into a rhythm guitar along with the drums playing intermittently. Can you feel her anguish when she sings "Na Jao, Balma"? The arrangements and production are exquisite with a fantastic Western rock flavour engulfing the core melody. The characters to make their way into the video are Kochi Roy, Maitreyee Nimbolkar and Varun Nimbolkar, with Radheya Hanawte as the Director and Mohit Tanpure as the DOP.

Varun has been crouching all along, and finally, he leaps into play with his Sitar solo in the interlude. Varun's demonstration is solid, as he is slow but steadily generates awe with the chord progression and execution. The song slows in intensity as Sai Shreya reaches for the lows on the vocal register, and then the electric guitar solo by Dhruv Trikanand is sweltering hot. Enjoy this 90-second outro of pure bliss. The tracks are mixed and mastered by the ingenious Nitin Muralikrishna.

6. Falling from Grace

Lyricist, Vocalist, Composer: Priyanka Nath

Music Produced by: Keshav Dhar

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Energetic

Priyanka Nath is an artist who has always been impressive and through his fine songwriting, she has always found a way into my weekly publications of India's best music. This time I am featuring an upbeat single and I am excited to listen to the new album of 7 tracks by the same Title "Falling from Grace". The rhythm guitars by Keshav work perfectly in tandem with Priyanka in the intro and verse, and then just when she sings " Cos Im falling from grace", there is a well-intended pause to allow the key message of the song to get through.

This is when Piano, guitars and bass start to kick in like a cushion that supports Priyanka who has just fallen from grace. Everything about this, and the verse that follows is fraught with grace. Priyanka delivers such a serenading performance on vocals and her writing is second to none. Keshav Dhar swoops in and the way the rhythm programming starts in the second verse makes the song jaunty as it goes "All you had to was, Tell me to warn myself". Priyanka shines in how she has written the melody especially when the pre-chorus starts becoming very affable and hummable "And ruminate about all, the things that could have been so different, But I do not see a point now".

The hint of a lead guitar playing the background during the pre-chorus is an excellent layer that beautifies the segment for me. Keshav has done a scintillating job on music production with a string section, and backing vocal arrangements in this song and you can hear all this outstanding sound design as we approach the outro. Truly, falling from grace has never felt so good. Keshav is also the recording and mixing engineer for the track, with Siddharth Talwar and Zain Calcuttawala on mastering duties.

7. Maa

Written, composed and sung by Aviral

Story and Concept: Aviral & Mansi

Music Produced, Mixed and Mastered by Basslila

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop- Ballad

Mood: Pathos

This song moved me and I found it to be one the best songs in recent memory dedicated to a mother's love. The theme is something that we hear a lot, but very few songs hit the right notes, nerve and sentiment. The gentle Piano and string section combine with great effect in the intro and you are drawn closer as Aviral sings "Seekha bahut hai, seekhna ab naaki hai". The words are powerful, and show how a mother is always your constant source of learning, discipline and personal growth.

It sends a message that no matter how much you have grown, there is also scope for improvement. Aviral pens the lyrics, writes the melody, and performs the lead vocals with poise. The texture of Aviral's vocals gives off a tone of humility, which makes the words come off as earnest and meaningful. The Sarangi solo is beautifully interjected in the interlude and brings a sense of melancholy. Aviral goes on to write a very hummable and heartwarming melody in the antara, as he sings "baaki hai tumse kala yeh seekhna, bin dekhe bin sune sab samajhna" along with the accompanying acoustic guitars.

The credits for all the amazing arrangements, sound design and music production goes to Basslila. The segment towards the end of the Antara with "Chhot jo lage, Maa Hai toh" and the Piano dominating is once again a very touching portion. The Sarangi and guitars and mild woodwinds come together and make it all so

8. Aye Ho Tum

Music Composed, Produced and Arranged by Sarthak Kalyani

Additional Programming and Vocals - Akash Sharma

Lyrics by - Vikram Edke

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

This is a song released by Sarthak Kalyani as he enters the top 30 of Nexa Music Season 3. I will be listening to all 30 tracks and doing a special rating and review on my IG page soon. For now, I was in awe of what Sarthak had to offer, but I wasn't surprised considering I knew what this musician was capable of. This song is composed, arranged and produced by Sarthak with some beautiful words written by Vikram Edke.

His dreamy vocals weave some very hummable magic and the chorus part with the onslaught of rhythms and the accompanying woodwinds "Khwaabon mein mere, aaye ho tum". Akash Sharma does all the additional programming and is also the additional vocalist here. Sarthak throws a fantastic surprise as he gets a Latin-styled Salsa segment in between the interlude. The very upbeat percussions and harmonies are true to that style of music. Suprava Mukherjee plays the guitars.

The stanza has an extended melody which allows Sarthak to showcase his wide vocal range. I do hear some influences of Bilawal Thaat in the melody. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Prateek Kelkar.

9. ESWY

Written and composed by Aman Sagar

Vocals: Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Aman Sagar

Produced by Aman Sagar

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop Classical Fusion

Mood: Dance

Just a couple of weeks ago I featured these splendid artists Aman Sagar and Sanjeet Bhattacharya along with Prabhjot on a Jazz-Pop single. Now it is another splendid outing for the former 2, with some classical fusion indulgence. There are some shades of Raag Desh in the melody as this fantastic vocalist Senjeeta performs the classical bits with great gusto. I realise the melody is from a Tumri called Kaari Badaria set in Raag Mishr Desh. The accompanying guitar, rhythms and keys add a nice touch to it, and then Aman takes over with these lines.

The harmonies are excellently performed and arranged as Aman sings " Tu Jo nahi to har khushi mein hai khamiyan". There is such a casual and fearless style in the way Aman sings, and Sanjeeta brings discipline and astuteness to her tone. I felt a nice sound of the Banjo, played by Aman here, and it adds a fine beautiful layer to the proceedings. The dance-pop style with a slow groovy tempo that follows with lines "De Tu mijhlko thoda time " is just the icing on the cake. The song's melody and lyrics are written by Aman Sagar, who produced it with immaculate vision, creativity, and style. The solo electric guitar by Aman in the outro is one stunning way to end this addictive track.

10.Hope Song

Composed and Arranged: Govind Vasantha

Singer: Kapil Kapilan

Lyrics: Anwar Ali

Additional Voices: Aavani Malhar, Ajmal Fathima Parveen, Angel Mary Joseph, Sony Mohan

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Pop

Mood: Happy

He marches on, while the rest the music world keeps listening to mediocre albums by some bigwigs. Govind Vasantha creates this pacy pop single from the movie 'Sarkeet' which does have some good music, but this song performed by Kapil Kapilan stands out. The song is composed and arranged by Govind and Kapil elevates what is already fantastic with his high-pitched vocals. There are very few who deeply imbibe their spirits into a song and perform it like Kapil.

The constant ringing in the ears comes from Sandeep Mohan and Durwin's guitars and Naveen Napier's bass. The entry of the chorus singers is a fabulous segment and feels incredibly heartwarming. The line "Paduka pathagale anandathin therodum" with Aavani Malhar, Ajmal Fathima Parveen, Angel Mary Joseph and Sony Mohan on backing vocals is mesmerising. The entire stanza moves along with Kapil and the additional vocalists performing the energetic lines together.

Durwin and Sandeep are freely creating some magic in the background on guitars, with the funkiness provided by Naveen. The final interlude adds chirpiness with Sandeep's Mandolin. Is there some Shanmukhapriya Ragam in the melody? Maybe. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Avinash Satish, with recording engineers Rohan Harish (Sonic Island) and Hariharan (20db Studios)
