1. Aasa Kooda
Music Composed and Produced by Sai Abhyankkar
Singers : Sai Abhyankkar, Sai Smriti
Lyrics by Sathyan Ilanko
Language: Tamil
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
2024's best Tamil song so far is 'Katchi Sera' composed, produced and performed by Sai Abhyankkar. I loved it and featured it on my website showering the artist and others involved with loads of praise. However, there was always a doubt at the back of my mind if Sai Abhyankkar would deliver another song of this quality or if he would end up being a one-hit writer. Those doubts and fears have vanished and it looks like this talented musician is making his mark.
Within a few seconds, the song creates butterflies in my stomach and that is actually what the video depicts too, a butterfly in flight. Sai Abhyankkar is not just a skilled composer, it seems he has the knack to produce a song effectively and that is evident with the vocal harmonies in the intro. Srinidhi Premkumar, Faik, Shiva and Elisa are the backing vocalists and we are treated to 43 seconds of intro music that just grows and brightens the day. Keba Jeremiah and Robin Sebastian play the electric guitars, while Keba is the bassist as well. I was blown away by the Clarinet and Sax interventions in the intro played by Ashish. Viswas Hari plays the Mandolin.
The verse starts and we have Sai Smriti and Sai Abhyankkar in solid form taking up lead vocal responsibilities. The baritone style of delivery by Smriti is exciting to hear and she adds a few Carnatic-styled ghamakas too in between. The catchy chorus segment that goes " Nee pesa lighta aasa kooda, vaasam veesum" is a very infectious melody written brilliantly by Sai Abhyankkar. He proves the simplest adage that for a good song , the most important element is the melody. The song has a very beautiful and hummable melody and that is why I feel this song wins hearts again.
The interlude is a Jugalbandhi between the Sax and the Clarinet and things do get quite Jaazy and funky in this segment. The stanza continues to showcase a fine melody and there are influences of Shanmukhapriya Ragam according to me. Towards the end when we get to the chorus segment, there is the Nadaswaram by Parthiban and Trumpets by John, Henry Park, H. Warner & Ben. Sathyan Ilanko, the lyricist mixes fun and romance in apt words.
There are so many layers and all the keys, synths and rhythms are programmed by Sai Bhyankkar delightfully. He arranges and produces the song masterfully and elements like the aalap by Sai Smriti in the background are great strokes. The tracks are mixed by Sai Abhyankkar at YOLO Records and mastered by Rupendar Venkatesh at Sai Dhwani Studios. Don't forget to have a blast watching the song video with some terrific moments of choreography by Anusha Viswanathan and The Dancers Club. Finally, I am also glad to see this lovely actress Preity Mukhundhan on screen, she is graceful and captivating, just like her presence in the new Tamil movie 'Star' alongside Kavin.

2. Neelorpam
Composed, Arranged & Programmed by Anirudh Ravichander
Lyrics - Thamarai
Vocals - Abby V & Shruthika Samudhrala
Language: Tamil
Genre: Ligh Music
Mood: Romantic
Finally, Anirudh delivers an enjoyable song, after slogging with massy and loud EDM overloads. I wish and hope there is more of this that he has to offer to us now. In the album "Indian 2" this is the only enjoyable song with a fantastic melody that probably sounds like Raag Desh to me. Abby V who is a fine talent, comes on board as the male lead vocalist. He gives life to the song with his Carnatic-styled delivery and excels in all the ghamakas. He is accompanied by a very able Shruthika Samudhrala, and this is one vocalist I will love to track in the future. The song gets a soul thanks to Thamarai's romantic lyrics.
I love it when Abby sings "ithai meeri pugaargal illai" with a heavy ghamaka on the second word. Anirudh composes, arranges and programs this eloquence. The additional rhythm and keyboard programming roles are filled in by Shashank Vijay and Arish respectively. Amalraj plays such a significant role in the song playing multiple instruments like the Electric, Acoustic guitar, Dobro Guitar, Charango, Ukulele, Violin, Violas, Ghunzheng and Harp. The man can play over 40 instruments, phew! The melody in the interlude is something that many songs in India are missing these days, so kudos to Anirudh for that. The indomitable Pratik Shrivastava sizzles on the Sarod solo and that is followed by a western piece on the Saxophone by Basanth Muralikrishnan.
The stanza is the segment that fills the heart with joy because the melody written here by Anirudh is wholesome and inspiring, and Shruthika delivers like a seasoned campaigner. The parts with the Sax are like an ode to AR Rahman's 'Duet'. Anirudh goes further and creates a brief bridge section other than the stanza, and this song gives me hope that there is still gas left in his tank. The tracks are mixed Vinay Sridhar & Srinivasan M at Albuquerque Records, Chennai, and mastered by Luca Pretolesi at Studio DMI, Las Vegas.

3. Vaada Poda
Composed, Arranged & Produced by Nivas K Prasanna
Vocals: Vaishali, Nivas K Prasanna
Lyrics: Mohan Rajan
Language: Tamil
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romance
Naveen Samson Benjamin and Keba Jeremiah make a stunning start to the song with the acoustic guitars in the intro. Nivas K Prasanna will be among the few talented composers in Kollywood who consistently deliver good music, whenever he lands an opportunity. This song is from the new movie " Emakku Thozhil Romance". Vaishali is the lead vocalist and it is the first time I have heard this singer. Nivas exhibits that flair for a memorable tune when we get to the line in the anupallavi " Kai regha theya pidippaya". Kudos to Mohan Rajan for some interesting lyrics.
Alex Samuel Jenito and Hevin Booster get some fancy rhythm programming on, that makes us tapping our feet all along. The stanza gets into more of a chirpy and energetic melody. Nivas and Vaishali combine elegantly with lines like "adam pidikkira azhaga, edam pidikkira methuva", and it subsequently lands on to the most beautiful line of the song. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Hevin with KA Surya Sri Hari as the music supervisor. Nivas comes late into the song but charms us with his voice and delivery.

4. Aaruyire
Composed, Arranged and Produced by Prasanna Suresh
Sung by Shakthisree Gopalan, Prasanna Suresh
Lyrics by Vignesh Ramakrishna
Language: Tamil
Genre: Pop Ballad
Mood: Romantic
Prasanna Suresh does the foremost thing brilliantly here, picking Shakthisree Gopalan for the lead vocals. She is an ideal choice for a romantic pop ballad of this nature and her baritonish vocals are perfect to deliver any message that borders on the excruciating pain and agony of love. The Piano just presents itself in the intro, and when Shakthisree stuns you with her vocals, we get the influx of keys and rhythms that takes into an ARRahmanesque production. Kudos to Prasanna Suresh for the valiant arrangements and programming.
The EDM influences elevate and make the song very catchy in the interlude. The stanza is where I bought into the song even more, as Prasanna tantalizingly performs the vocals. The tempo drops and we get the Tabla, guitars and the keys mixing in to give a great concoction. The sound of the Nadaswaram and Mridangam in the second interlude gives a beautiful southern touch. The slide guitars are played by Amritanshu Dutta, and it is Rupendar Venkatesh and Outfly on mixing and mastering. The excellent lyrics that speak volumes about love and endearment are written by Vignesh Ramakrishna and well done Prasanna on the composition because the melody in this song is as sweet as pure nectar.

5. Uyiralaye
Composer, Producer, Arranger: Ashwin Vinayagamoorthy
Lyricist: Kabilan
Vocals: Shashaa Tirupati
Language: Tamil
Genre: Light Music/Pop
Mood: Romantic
Ashwin Vinayagamoorthy is a fine young composer/producer and after a few months or so, I am glad to feature this indie single. He has a flair for inducing a good hummable melody with some excellent programming and production armoury. Ashwin has composed, arranged and produced the single with the impeccable vocals of Shashaa Tirupati.
The gentle acoustic guitars by Simeon Telfer and Keys flow alongside the mellifluous voice of Shashaa. The interlude is filled with the striking solo on the violin by Manoj, which makes the song catchy and peppy, and the introduction of the humming and Tabla is classy. The stanza is beautifully written as a melody but what works even better are the vocal harmonies, basslines by Napier Naveen, Piano and violin intervention. Seinnor plays the Piano and handles the synths. The violin arrangements are by the brilliant Manoj Kumar.
I love the landing segment that goes "En Kanna Va Va" taking us to the pallavi. Kudos to the percussions by Veda who plays the Ghatam and Kanjira. Siva Prakasam is on the rhythm arrangements. The song's melody and production remind me of Maestro's "Oru Poongavanam" from 'Agni Natchathiram'. I am also sensing some Raag Yamunakalyani in the melody. Kausthub Ravi is on the backing vocals and harmonies. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Sivanesh Natarajan and RK Sundar at Shimmr Studios, Chennai.

6. Thaaye Thaaye
Singer: Sid Sriram
Music: B. Ajaneesh Loknath
Language: Tamil
Genre: Light Music
Mood: Pathos
The intro flute is a beauty and it captivates you within seconds. The solo on the Flute is played by R S Vikram and another hero of the song is the bassist Godfrey Immanuel. It is probably set in Kaapi Ragam (Pilu in Hindustani) and the gentle but gorgeous melody gets a wonderful vehicle in the form of Sid Sriram as lead vocalist. The song oozes of some amazing quality thanks to the composition by B Ajaneesh Loknath. The music production by CR Bobby and Ajaneesh is top-notch with excellent arrangements.
The Keys are by Ajaneesh, Sharan Rao and Rishi Rajesh with additional programming by Raja Ravi Varma. We also get some upbeat and creative rhythm production as well thanks to Ajaneesh, Rishi and Andruson. The flute solo actually is also part of the BGM score in the movie during a few instances. The stanza is short but it never deviates from the warmth produced by the melody earlier on. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Keerthi Vasan, RM Studios Chennai and the recording engineers are Vishnu at Sound Town Studio, Chennai and Raja Ravi Varma at RM Studio Chennai.

7. Un Peru Enna
Composed & Performed by Teejay & Geethiyaa
Music produced, Arranged & Written by TeeJay
Singers - TeeJay Arunasalam & Geethiyaa Varman
Language: Tamil
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
Teejay is a phenomenal talent, considering he acts and performs well in front of the screen and more importantly he also writes and performs music. A year or so back I did feature his independent music and this time has back with something even better. I could go as far as saying that this is one of those songs that brought a smile to my face and made me feel alive. The song's lovable melody is composed by Teejay Arunasalam and Geethiyaa Varman. The latter seems to be another precociously talented individual as she performs the vocals, co-writes the melody and also plays the Veena solo in the song.
It all begins with a Hotel California-esque acoustic guitar intro by Keba Jeremiah and the strings section in the background. Teejay's unique tone is like a lover amidst vulnerability and longing. My body and heart start swaying when he sings "acchaccho" and the additional vocals of Elfe Choir make it a soothing lullaby. The faint bass guitars by Keba add that stylish component but wait for the moment of magic on the Veena by Geethiya in the interlude.
Ashwin Raja does all the additional music production and he's the man behind the Keys, Synths and rhythms. I feel the beauty of the Kanjira along with the harmonies in the background. The outro is mesmerising with the lead and backing vocalists coming together and singing the title line, and Keba finishes it off just like he started on the acoustic guitar. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Balu Thankachan at 20db Sound Studios

8. Paakura Thaakura
Composed, Arranged and Produced by Nivas K Prasanna
Singers : Kapil Kapilan, Nivas K Prasanna
Lyricist: Mohan Rajan
Language: Tamil
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
Not many composers have 2 songs from the same album featured in my reviews, let alone in the same month. Here comes another pop melody that will turn you into a romantic mood. Well, other than the tune and production, we also have the vocals by Kapil that will make you go zany. Rajhesh Vaidhya comes in and plays a solid Veena solo with some Westernised impact. The tune does remind me of Nivas' famous song 'Nira'.
The song from 'Emakku Thozhil Romance' has Nivas K Prasanna on composition, arrangements and production. The lyrics are penned by Mohan Rajan, and he has a way of writing such witty and interesting lyrics. Keba Jeremiah is the guitarist and all the splendid additional programming is by Alex Samuel Jenito and K.A.Surya Sri Hari. Most unexpectedly, we get a solid "Kuthu" segment after the interlude, performed by Nivas on vocals and a flavorful rhythm section. Beven Elankumaran is on the Melodyne, and Hevin Booster is the vocal supervisor. The mix/master engineer is K.S.Maniratnam @ The Mystic's Room and the recording engineer is Hevin Booster @ RMP studio

9. Nee Nee Nee
Singers: Andrea Jeremiah, Abby V
Music: MS Jones, Abby V
Lyrics: Yugaa, Naveen Barathi, Abby V
Language: Tamil
Genre: Alt-Pop
Mood: Dance
MS Jones Rupert is a consistent producer who keeps releasing very catchy indie singles and this has been a pattern ever since I started as a music journalist. The song is composed by MS Jones and Abby V, with the latter crooning away on lead vocals. This is a fabulous call by the composers to get Abby on vocals for a song I would have never expected him to execute so well, let alone perform.
We are used to hearing semi-classical performances from Abby, but here he is in some other mood altogether. The ALt-Pop song demands style, as much substance and when he sings "Nee Nee Nee" it is rejuvenating. Yugaa, Naveen Bharathi and Abby write the lyrics.
Andreah matches the glamour and glitz of Abby and the song just moves forward like a soothing breeze. We must get up and dance to the tune which also gets some 'A' grade sound design and production. Lonnie Park is the mix/master engineer. There is some enjoyable choreography by Anusha Viswanathan and The Dancers Club.

10. Yazhiha
Vocals: Vidya Vox, Rohith Jayaraman
Composition: Vidya Vox
Producer: Shankar Tucker
Lyricist: Madhan Karky
Language: Tamil
Genre: Folk-Pop
Mood: Energetic
This is my favourite song from the EP called 'Sundari' by Vidya Iyer a.k.a. Vidya Vox. The song has some funky arrangements thanks to Shankar Tucker and when it comes to vocals, we have some excellent performances by Rohith and Vidya. There is heavy keyboard and rhythm programming on display here and when the jathis and swaras are performed by Jayaram with synths in the background the song gets a massive facelift. The guitars are played by Brandon Bae and Sheldon Reed is the drummer.
The production is stylish and Vidya gets on board with the uber-cool attitude on some folkish hip-hop performance. Madhan Karky pens the lyrics. Rohith brings his A game on with his vocals, which generate oomph and energy for the song. I am happy the song has many layers and it traverses through different genres in a matter of a few minutes. I sense some Abheri Ragam in the aalap done by Rohith in the outro.

11. Vaa En Uyrie
Music Composed and Arranged by Stephen Zechariah
Vocals: Stephen Zechariah, Srinisha Jayaseelan
Lyrics: Vignesh Ramakrishna
Add. Lyrics: Mohan Rajan
Music Advisor - Kumar Morgan
Language: Tamil
Genre: Light Music
Mood: Pathos
I have featured Stephen Zechariah's songs several times, and after a long gap, he is back here again. Stepehn's compositions follow a set pattern, with a semi-classical-sounding melody that carries a mild pathos in its tone. The arrangements are elaborate as always with the violins. This song ticked all those boxes and we have Stephen and Srinisha Jayaseelan on lead vocals. The two of them have performed well on Stephen's tune before and this too is a solid delivery.
Srinisha has a wide vocal range and when she reaches the higher vocal registers it is a treat to the ears. Vignesh Ramakrishna is the main lyricist with additional lyrics penned by Mohan Rajan. I feel the pain when the lyrics "Vaa En Uyire, Vaa en urave, unnale en kaadhal vazhuthe". Keba Jeremiah plays the acoustic guitars and bass and drives the romantic energy forward, but it is Akkarsh N Kasyap's Violins that engage and spreads the melancholy. The terrific rhythms are a force to reckon with in this song thanks to Vicky B on rhythm production. Kumar Morgan is the keyboard programmer. The stanza is elaborate and continues to squeeze all the sadness out of every corner of the heart.
The violin solo in the 2nd interlude is one of the song's highlights, along with the flute solo and the strings section in the background. The tracks are mixed and mastered by A M Rahmathulla and recorded by Dale Low at Noivil Studios Singapore and by Hari at 20db Studios (Chennai). The arrangements are simply fantastic and it is good music like this that we have come to expect from Stephen. Kudos to the Budapest Scoring Orchestra for the amazing strings section, and the Orchestrators Balasubramanian G and Abishek V.

12. Layame
Music - Balamuruga Muthumani
Lyrics - Divya
Vocals - Balamuruga & Madhusree
Language: Tamil
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
The Madhushree we know has so many beautiful melodies for AR Rahman, and here she sings something enticing for Balamuruga. The man has composed a melody and also performed the male lead vocals. The Tamil diction could have been better from Madhushree, but we are kind of used to it over the years. In the interlude, we have Jeeva Anand playing the electric guitars, and Balamuruga on keys and rhythm programming.
I love the line " Unnodu Naan Kai korkkum naal, manathai vittu maranthidumo", thanks to the melody and lyrics by Divya. Roazario does a fine job adding to the cool quotient on bass guitars and he combines with Bala in producing the song. The mixing is by Rozario and the mastering is by Aravind Gopalakrishnan
