Here are the best songs released in India across languages and genres for the week ending 19th January 2025

1. Moh

Singer: Isheeta Chakravarty

Composer, Producer: Project Damru

Lyrics: Nawab Sadiq Jung Bahadur 'Hilm'

Sitar: Soumitra Thakur

Language: Hindi

Genre: Semi-classical Pop

Mood: Trippy

Isheeta Chakravarty will ensure that your focus is unswerving and remains loyal to her delivery. A stunning performer with immense character and abilities to move across genres, Isheeta delivers a hauntingly good semi-classical number here. The composition and production are by Ashish Jha a.k.a Project Damru and the ingenuity lies in adding so many layers of arrangements.

The lyrics are penned by Nawab Sadiq Jung Bahadur 'Hilm'. The heavy keys and synths add to the mystery, but the Sitar by Soumitra Thakur gives the tranquillity that your heart desires. Soumitra goes on to bamboozle you with the solo in the interlude. The melody twists and turns and probably moves across many scales, I could sense some Raag Sindhubhairavi at some point. The end of the interlude makes me feel cathartic with the slowed-down tempo and one magical piece on the Sitar and Pianos together.

Take a bow Project Damru for what you have created, here as we have harmonies and strings section working together and giving me the chills. The electronic-pop nature of the song is scintillating and only a musician of great vision and abilities can produce something of this quality. Kudos to Vipul Angrish who has mixed and mastered the tracks and Anindo Bose, Keshav Dhar for working as the recording engineers.

2. Begana

Music Composer - Raghav Chaitanya

Singer - Raghav Chaitanya

Lyrics - Raghav Chaitanya, Traditional

Music Production By - Mir Desai

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Soothing

He is a noteworthy talent, this Raghav Chaitanya. I have seen him perform with great eloquence as a lead vocalist for many composers, but he also shines as a composer like this one here. This single is written, composed and performed by Raghav and the song gets a facelift with the production thanks to Mir Desai. Ishan Das' gentle acoustic guitar and Raghav's soothing voice both treated us well in the intro and verse of the song.

The accompanying vocal harmonies are stunning and my hair starts rising when I hear "Jazbaat ko samjhaana" with Aniruddh Anantha performing and designing the backing vocals. Raghav knows how to carry a song forward with his vocals, because he strikes you with the rawness, rather than overdoing any parts. The vibrato is mild but meaningful. The introduction of bass guitars and the Dholak is where the song makes a move into the next zone of enchantment. Ishteyak Khan plays the Dholak and Tabla, and Biswajit Chakraborty is the bassist.

The line really hits you when he sings " kyun aankh milaayi thi, kyun aag lagayi thi". Wait for it, as the song moves into the chorus segment and we get an Indian rock flavour to the song now. Nawaz Hussain pumps it up with the drums and Ishan Das adds fuel to the fire with the electric guitars. Well done Mir Desai, on the arrangements and production. The amazement doesn't stop here as Bhagirath Bhatt sizzles on the Sitar solo in the interlude. Mir joins on additional backing vocals, and as the song progresses the interventions on the electric guitar, the Sitar and Aalap by Raghav combine and crackle together.

I love the mild humming on the harmonies when we hear the line "Joh to ho wahi main hoon, bas farak zara sa hai". The recording engineers are Partha and Nishant at Euphony Studio. Shadab Rayeen is the mix and master engineer with Akash Sawant working on the team as well.

3. Bacchic Ways

Music, Lyrics: St.Cyril

Vocals:

Language: English

Genre: Rock

Mood: Energetic

This duo from Mumbai released its debut album in January called "Hurt People Hurt People", sort of talking about actions and reactions. I loved this rock album giving it a 3.5/5 and I recommend that you stream it. There is some good rock music that breaks through a few distinct compartments like punk rock, ballad rock, soft rock, swing/rock etc. This song was my favourite from the album and like its title, it feels like a drunken revelry and a boisterous celebration of life through music.

The electric guitars, bass and drums need no invitation and they are charged up from the get-go. Sarthak is the lead vocalist, guitarist and bassist, while Shashwat, the other half of this duo is the rhythm man giving us all the shots and boosts with his drums. I love the use of falsetto, as Sarthak employs the style quite effectively without ever overdoing it. The pauses and resumption on drums are ecstatic and the guitar riffs are written for " we have lost our days to bacchic ways". These are moments in the subsequent segments with the electric guitar notes, that I felt similarities to "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" by U2 for the 'Batman Forever' OST.

The writing is very interesting with lines like "What's the loot? bought our youth? Shot the truth? even as Shashwat gives off his skills in the backing vocals segment. The uber-cool attitude in Sarthaks' voice effuses so much confidence and as a listener, my mind feels like I have been at the receiving end of a spell. Make sure you wait for the outro and let the guitar notes bamboozle you.

4. Between The Lines

Written by Rajeev Prasanna

Produced by Nalin Vinayak

Language: Instrumental

Genre: Semi-classical rock

Mood: Energetic

Here, we have an instrumental track that feels like a walk in the clouds, thanks to the mesmerising melody written by Rajeev Prasanna, who also plays the playful and dynamic flute solo. Then, we have the influx of electric guitars and thunderous drums, making this a semi-classical rock fusion. Abhishek Dasgupta is spicing the scene with the electric guitars, while Tadhunandan Naragaj on drums upped the energy.

Nalin Vinayak is responsible for this creative fusion and blending of Indian semi-classical and rock elements. There are so many layers to the flute itself and the interlude with the electric guitar solo and bass guitars was spellbinding, to say the least. The melody is the winner because without that we would just have something pedestrian. The song takes a shift as the drums and guitars vanish and we have the Indian percussions along with a mellifluent and gentle verse played on the flute.

Just like the title reads " Between the lines" there are so many things happening, with scales changing, genres bending and so on.

5. Kanha

Singer: Shreya Ghoshal

Music : Sourendro-Soumyojit

Lyrics: Ram Kamal Mukherjee

Additional Lyrics: Ipsita Sengupta

Language: Hindi (Traditional)

Genre: Semi-classical

Mood: Dance

Get a load of this classical creation by composers Sourendro-Soumyojit for their movie album " Binodiini". Who else but the ravishing Shreya Ghoshal to grace the occasion and perform the lead vocals in her native tongue Bangla? Allah Rakha Kalavant plays the soulful Sarangi at the intro and then it is all upon Shreya to take us through this musical journey. Joy Nandi plays the Tabla and percussions and we get a wave of strings section arrangements in the background.

Sandipan Ganguly plays the solo violin, Bubi Nandi is the flautist and all the programming is by Saikat Biswas Goblo along with Ashish Kumar Das. The arrangements are dynamic with many elements transpiring like the bass guitars by Himadri Shil Kalyan Majumdar on the Sitar and the Sarod by Swarnendu Mondal. Once the interlude is over, Shreya contorts her vocals and gives a magical experience to cherish as the listener. The melody probably has some races of Raag Tilak Kamod as well as some of Raag Desh.

6. Dil Ka Haara

Written & Composed by: Aditya Kalway

Sung by: Aditya Kalway & Prateeksha Srivastava

Music Produced by: Nikhil-Swapnil, Aditya Kalway

Language: Hindi

Genre: Electronic Pop

Mood: Romantic

Here we go, what a way to begin the new year! Aditya Kalway and Prateeksha Srivastava are two of our special talents in the Indie space and here they collaborate for a breezy romantic single. Shrey Gupta and Muheet Bharti raise the temperature with their guitars in the intro and the punching rhythms give you the hint, this is your time to take in the goodness of electronic pop.

The groovy production is by Nikhil-Swapnil and Aditya and they keep things simple and suave. The lyrics in Hindi and English make things very agreeable with the modern populace and music lovers. A song like this fitting for a long drive. Prateeksha takes her time to make her foray into the song, but when she does, the singing is like the Venus in the night sky, impossible to miss. How she piles on the style with those uber-cool vibrato and falsetto notes! Shrey writes the additional lyrics, and the tracks are mixed and mastered by Basspeak.

7. Ji Huzoor

Singer: Shashwat Singh, Shalini Tomar, Gul Saxena

Music: Abhijit Vaghani

Lyrics: Bhrigu Parashar

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Abhijit Vaghani has been featured several times for some striking work, especially in music production. Here he is again composing and producing this very enjoyable indie single. The guitar riffs and Gul Saxena's sweet voice lay the groundwork. The melody is soothing and feels like a bit of Raag Desh. Bhrigu Parashar pens the lyrics. The song is a bit of a lullaby and the head just sways in mesmerism.

The verse begins as Shashwat Singh and Shalin Tomer launch on the power in Shashwat's voice comes to light as he sings " Mann chali, saari aadatein teri". The Keys, rhythms and harmonies are well programmed and arranged giving a very cool and catchy sound design. The bridge section is nicely written both lyrically and notationally as Shashwat sings "tere bina bhi chal raha tha sab sahi".

The lady protagonist doesn't keep quiet, as she retorts " jo bhi main karoon, tu nikalta kami".Bhrigu does a fine job with these interesting and relevant lyrics. I love the introduction of the Sarangi in the outro.

8. These Waters

Written, Performed: Clint Lewis

Produced by Amith Vinod

Language:

Genre: Pop

Mood: Inspiring

Wow! Clint Lewis, I am listening to this musician for the very first time, and this is one of the most impressive songs I have heard in the last few weeks. Clint writes the lyrics, composes the melody and performs the stirring vocals. The tone is immersive and I cannot focus on anything else but his singing. He is trembling and I feel the emotions that Clint is exhibiting when the protagonist wants to make it out of these waters without giving up.

Amith Vinod keeps things simple as the music producer, and we feel the gentle Piano with the subtle rhythms and strings section in the background. The keyboardist from WCMT, Palee Francis is the man in charge of mixing and mastering these tracks. I am engrossed in the sound design and output standard that this team has put out. The bridge section is beautiful, and CLint exhibits class in the falsetto.

9. Jaaneya

Singer-songwriter & Producer: Keshav Tyohar

Lyrics: Keshav Tyohar, Rohan Upadeo

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Mild Pathos

Keshav Tyohar writes the melody, performs the lead vocals and produces this soothing romantic pop single. The melody is hitting the right notes and with Keshav's vulnerable delivery, this feels like a song that you want to play again and again thinking of and missing your loved one. The chorus segment felt extremely catchy as he sings "sab kuch kho ke baitha tha o jaaneya".

Rohan Updaeo and Keshav penned the words together, and the impact of these lyrics is as strong as the tune and vocals in delivering the message straight. One can feel his agony when Keshav sings " hua fanaa, par tune na suna" and that is the essence of good singing. The work on the keys and rhythm programming is commendable, acting like agents that prick and pulsate those tender parts of our hearts. Hanish Taneja is the mix/master engineer at Studio Alika.

10. Saanvare

Singers - Outsky & Prajakta Koli

Music, written, composed and performed by Outsky

Language: Hindi

Genre: Electronic Pop

Mood: Romantic

Outsky and Prajakta Koli give us a very gentle giant of a song here, as the former writes the melody, and lyrics and performs the male lead vocals, with Prajakta lending her voice as a female lead. The tone and sound design is very much like an OAFFxSavera creation and that is why the song will have many takers. The heavy keys and synths and rhythm programming work just fine, but it would not be complete without a melody that sounds hummable like this.

As Prajaskta sings " Khwaabon ke bazar me" in the verse, the gentle Tabla incites romanticism and my penchant for great music. One must appreciate this multi-faceted star, after her meteoric rise as an actress, Prajakta shows off her singing skills. Omkar Tamhan and Nikita Bharani are the mix/master engineers with Nikita and Jerald James working on the Atmos mix.
