Top Indian Songs of the week 14th April 2024

If you are a musician submit your new music here.

Here are the best songs released in India across languages and genres for the week ending 14th April 2024.

1. Yimmy Yimmy

Singers: Tayc & Shreya Ghoshal

Lyricists: Tayc & Rana Sotal

Music composers : Rajat Nagpal, Tayc & Nyadjiko

Music Producer: Nyadjiko

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop Fusion

Mood: Dance

It is a rare feat for a Hindi indie song coming from big names, labels and popularity to be this good. I was stunned by the fusion, the underlying melody, the intertwining of styles and the overall appeal. Rajat Nagpal doesn't surprise me, because I have been always fond of his compositions, so take a sniff of this fusion song with some fragments of pop and Afrobeats.

Shreya Ghoshal elevates the melody with her fabulous voice, delivery and enjoyable vibrato. Tayc sings the high-pitched Afrobeats, Pop and Hip-Hop segments when he sings "You gotta figure it out, make your way", the lyrics and singing hit you. The way these are fused with Shreya's lines is seamless and catchy. The song is produced with such finesses and style thanks to Nyadjiko who is also the co-composer along with Rajat and Tayc. The chorus line "Yimmy Yimmy" is a riot and it makes you want to groove.

The verse is beautiful as Shreya kills it with her passionate and flawless singing. Tayc and Rana Sotal are the lyricists. As we get to the outro, the vocalists carry on with their free-style aalaps and immersive improvisations. Djnass212 is the mix engineer.

2. Rehah

Vocals - Adarsh Chavat

Production - Rohit Dhanorkar

Composer - Rohit Dhanorkar, Adarsh Chavat and Swapnil Sahu

Language: Hindi

Genre: Rock

Mood: Energetic

Adarsh Chavat reached out to me by submitting his music on my website, and I go through every submission, to then proceed to give my feedback personally to the artists. Adarsh's song was a cut above the rest and though it was released back in 2023, I felt I had to feature and mention it here in my weeklies. This is world-beating Hard metal music and every element stands out to titillate the music lover.

Adarsh is scintillating on vocals, coming up with a pulsating delivery just like the genre demands. The melody is composed by Adarsh, Rohit Dhanorkar and Swapnil Sahu. The song is however produced by Rohit, so kudos to him for the perfect blend of instrumentals through arrangements. Nishit Hegde is electrifying on lead guitars and he varies the song on his shoulder in various instances with his solo. Swapnil Sahu plays the rhythm guitars and the drums are thumping.

Listen to the smashing solo on the electric guitar around the 2-minute mark and it will be difficult to not band your head at that moment. The bridge comes about like a breath of fresh air, dropping the tempo and adrenaline. Behold the astonishing outro and the vocals and lead guitars are magnificent here. Adarsh writes the lyrics

3. Dhund Lo Mujhe

Performed by Sheherazaad

Written, Composed, Arranged by Sheherazaad

Produced by Arooj Aftab

Language: Hindi

Genre: Alternative

Mood: Contemplative

The new EP by Sheherazaad is out and I just made a full EP review of 'Qasr' on IG, giving it a 3.5/5 rating. The artist combines with another phenomenal talent called Arooj Aftab from Pakistan. She is a brilliant Grammy-winning producer and this song is one of the favourites from the EP. The Middle Eastern/Meditteranean texture is brought about thanks to the frantic violin solo by Basma Edrees right in the intro.

After that, it is an energetic combination of the strings section with Runar Blesvik. Sheherazaad is hauntingly good with her vocals, singing the lines written by her and she also has composed the underlying melody and arranged all the instrumentals. The way she sings "almaari mein chaand", I can feel my hair rising on my arms, as only an extremely capable singer can achieve this. The verse is like a battle of wits between the vocalist and the violinist and music alone is the victor. Basma's solo violin in the outro is nothing short of epic.

Arooj Aftab makes this one memorable and engrossing track thanks to her production and sound design. We have Runar on the varied percussion and he also is the recording engineer along with J Vallaeu. The mixing is by J Vallaeu with Heba Kadry as the mastering engineer.

4. Obliviate

Performed by Turnback Cave

Written by Argha Sen, Arsh Das, Diptopaul Chatterjee, Pradyut Naha

Language: English

Genre: Rock

Mood: Energetic

A rock band from Kolkatta, well that sometimes says it all, doesn't it? Here comes Turnback Cave with their single called "Obliviate" and yes when you listen to this engaging rock number, you might just tend to put other things around you into oblivion. The electric guitar riff along with the Keys form the background, but the ears focus on the fantastic vocals of frontman Arsh Das. The lead guitarist is Diptopaul Chatterjee with bassist Pradyut Naha.

I am all sold when I hear Arsh sing, and the song is written by the Diptopaul, Pradyut, Arsh and Argha. I further got a boost of energy when I heard him sing " And we'll be broken, to lie down together at last" with a shift in the Octaves for the second part of the line. The drums and electric guitars rage on and you are deep into the blended magnificence of this heavy metal-sounding segment. Many might not realise that such brilliant rock music can give peace, rather than just evoke adrenaline rushes. Just close your eyes and enjoy the electric guitar solo along with the bass and drums by Argha and there lies the secret to fly, if not your body, your soul will. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Akash Singha.

5. Bhagavathi

Composed by Project Malabaricus

Vocals: Sithara Krishnakumar

Additional vocals:

Lyrics: Dr Sajish M

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Rock- Metal

Mood: Devotional/Energetic

I love the band Project Malabaricus for their folk-rock music and I have featured them on many occasions if not for their brand of music, purely for Sithara's mesmerising vocals alone. It seems to me that we have a Kazoo playing in the intro along with some tense sounds like the prayer for Goddess Bhagavathy. Libo Praisly Kripesh and Vijo Job turn on the heat with the guitars and we have Ajay Krishnan on bass. Everything comes to a standstill for me when Sithara starts singing, as she brings in her A game and gives a classical Carnatic touch in her delivery. It feels like there are Revathi Ragam influences in the melody

Midhun Paul plays the drums with Srinath Nair on the keys and we get a taste of some hell-raising heavy metal in the chorus segment and the interlude. I love the electric guitars being played like a classical Indian instrument, and here Sunilkumar PK gives the folkish flavour with the percussion. Sunil Panicker and Babu Panicker provide the support on additional vocals. Dr. Sajish M is the lyricist, that glorifies the Goddess. The tone is like those that we have heard from bands like 'Agam' and Thaikkudam Bridge' but when we have a female lead like Sithara on vocals, the impact is better. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Rajan KS. Shiju Ediyatheril at Audiogene and Arjun B Nair at Sonic Island are the recording engineers.

6. Saza

Performed by Lisa Mishra

Lyrics by Lisa Mishra, Charan, Shivam Srivastava

Music Composed by Lisa Mishra, Charan, Soham Mukherjee, Karan Kanchan

Music Produced by Soham Mukherji, Lisa Mishra, Karan Kanchan

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Lisa Mishra is a name that you better slowly start memorizing because she is announcing herself with work that is constantly improving, and increasingly impressive. Guitars by Aakash decorate the intro and pull us into the song, and when Lisa starts singing she fills the song with such emotional aptness and the trembling vocals with fine vibrato show the protagonist's state of mind.

I love the writing with words like " kid baath kee milee ye sazaa, bin kuch kahe kahaan tu chala?", and Lisa co-writes the lyrics along with Charan and Shivam Srivastava. When it comes to the melody, it is written by Lisa Mishra, Charan, Soham Mukherjee and Karan Kanchan. This is some solid teamwork, presented to us with Lisa's amazing voice and delivery.

We get to the verse the lyrics move to English and just as the words depict, Lisa also brings more positivity and a breath of warm romance with lyrics like "kambal mein chehara chupana, I taught you that, thaaron ko gin ke sulaana, I taught you that". It is fantastic because the message is delivered both through the words and the tone in the voice and so kudos to Lisa for that. She gets back into a state of heartbreak when she sings " Is it true, I don't stand a chance?" followed by a fantastic segment of classical-sounding aalap.

The production is minimal and that is perfectly done without taking away any attention of the listener from the words and Lisa's impactful singing. Lisa, Karan and Soham are the producers. I cannot stop raving about Lisa's performance and this line once again comes up with " Bin kuch kahe kaahan tu chala" as she twists and tantalises on the last word. Have we just found the best heartbreak song of 2024? We shall find out! Prathamesh Dudhane is on mixing and mastering.

7. Thinking of you

Composer, Lyricist: Anurag Trivedi, Nirupan Sinha

Producer, Arranger: Nirupan Sinha

Language: English

Genre: Alt-Rock

Mood: Romantic

No, it is not Coldplay, but to even be used in the same sentence, a young artist needs to be happy and proud. Anurag Trivedi has composed the groovy melody and written the lyrics as well along with performing the lead vocals. The credit for making this, one amazing Bluesy track goes to Nirupan Sinha for doing the arrangements, along with co-writing the song. The guitars and drums are mild but ecstatic in a way with Sarthak Pradhan on drums. The lead guitars by Anurag and bass guitars portray such a pluck of class and the song evokes a trippy romantic mood with the words "Thinking of You".

Nirupan does a fabulous job getting the right moments of pause and then allowing the bass, played by Nirupan and Keys, played by Shivam Rohilla, to provide us with some terrific sounds. We can hear the backing vocal harmonies by Anupama V Sharma and the trumpets in the background as well. Soumojit Nag, and Solomon Konwar Rengma are the recording engineers and Mukul Deep Jain is the mixing and mastering engineer.

8. Yaad Aave

Singers: Sachin-Jigar, Simran Choudhary & Varun Jain

Rap Sung by: The Rish

Music: Sachin-Jigar

Lyrics: Priya Saraiya

Programmed & Arranged by: Sachin-Jigar

Music Production Head: Romil Ved

Language: Punjabi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

The movie was a dampener, this 'Murder Mubarak'. The songs too weren't all too exciting for me but this one alone hit the right notes. Sachin-Jigar have composed a melody that has a nice ring to it and they have done the programming and arrangements for this song. The placement in the movie is also not very memorable but talking about the production and sound design, I have no complaints.

Indrajit Chetia cuts through your heart like a knife on his guitars, and then when Simran Choudhary sings these Punjabi lines, you are down on your knees pleading with this woman to stay close to you. Her folkish way of singing, and then the part " meri jaan chali jaave" followed by the creative drums explosion is fantastic. Romil Ved is the music production head and all the additional programming is by Hrishikesh Gangan & Abhishek Singh. Varun Singh compliments well on the male lead vocals, and the stylish production makes up for the song's short melody. The rap segment is performed by The Rish.

Simran evokes a great sense of pathos in her delivery with beautiful lines like " gan sun lai meriyaan, yaad aisi teriyaan" penned by Priya Saraiya. The improvisation by Simran in the ouro is outstanding in Arijit-esque style. Jitendra Jawda plays the Violin and Viola in the background during the outro. Swar Mehta is the recording, mixing and mastering engineer at White Noise Production.

9. Vinu Manasu

Singer: Reshma Shyam

Music Director: Sreejith Edavana

Lyricist: Ravitheja Amaranarayana

Language: Telugu

Genre: Blues Pop

Mood: Contemplative

We remember this project by Sreejith Edavan, don't we? An album with 24 songs, 6 in each of the South Indian languages. A few songs have been featured with articles on them in Tamil, Malayalam etc and here comes a song in Telugu. It is composed, produced and arranged by Sreejith with lyrics by Ravitheja Amaranarayana. I was fond of Reshma Shyam's performances when she came and performed on the Super Singer show on Vijay TV.

The vocal tone is outstanding and she can reach the baritone vocal registers with consummate ease. Listen to the line "that cheppina kaani, vidhi nadavvnidi" and you will understand what I am referring to.

The Keys play on, and the Kazoo probably makes a cameo in the interlude. The humming at the end of the verse reminds me of the humming from "Desert Rose" by Sting. The humming gets to be haunting in the outro. Adeline Simon Chittilappilly is the recording, mixing and mastering engineer.

10. Mushaphira

Music Arranged, Composed And Produced By Hitesh Modak

Lyrics - Vaibhav Joshi

Singer - Hitesh Modak Feat. Vibhavari Apte

Language: Marathi

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

This Marathi album smiled at me as I liked two songs in this collection. It feels better when we have composers other than Ajay-Atul and AV Prafullchandra making their mark. Hitesh Modak was featured by me before in the Marathi movie space a couple of years ago (also from this strange album) and here he dazzles. Initially, it is all about Kiran Vinkar's flute solo that makes butterflies loiter in the heart. I have always known Vibhavari Apte, from her performances for Maestro Ialiayaja in Tamil and here she sings flawlessly in her mother tongue. The lyrics are penned by Vaibhav Joshi.

The bass guitars and strokes stand out for me right through and they are played by Esani Dey Modak. The melody is so enriching and it is written by Hitesh, who also completely handles the arrangements and production. My favorite line is the antara and here I did gear some fragments of Raag Maand. Pratap Rath's percussions combine well with the strokes. The flute solo in the interlude, too is very similar to the Maand scale and the arrangements are a unique selling point of the song. Hitesh is the recording engineer with Abhishek Khandelwal on mixing and mastering at Yrf Studios, assisted by Dileep Nair. The song overall has a very ARRahman tonality and that is meant to be a compliment.

The other song I love to shreds in the album is Priyanka Barve's 'Mrugtrushna'. No one can doubt Priyanka's phenomenal abilities and she uses them to slaughter this home. The lyrics for this one are by Mandar Cholkar. We can also hear Radhika Bhide on backing vocals. The gentle song slowly gets into your system, and from being mild, the intensity rises, with accompanying string sections and harmonies. The electric guitars in the background are beyond excellent thanks to Esani Dey Modak. Priyanka's vocals are so emphatic and she teases and dominates with her vibrato and improvisation. The song is recorded by Sameer Dharap and Rahul Sharma at Studio 504, and all the songs have Anjali Sathe playing the role of Music Assistant and Co-ordinator.

11. Doori

Composition: Nikhil and Rishabh

Vocals: Nikhil and Rishabh

Lyrics: Nikhil Shetty

Production: Rishabh Ravi

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Happy

Let yourself lose, for this enticing pop song that is bound to make you dance and get your spirits up and running. Nikhil and Rishabh are a duo I haven't featured before and the duo entirely cook up this single all by themselves. Rishabh Ravi is the producer other than performing on lead vocals along with Nikhil Shetty. The lyrics are written by Nikhil and the melody is written by both.

The keys, synths, guitars, drums and harmonies make for some very likeable sound designs. The melody is simple, but the production and vocals more than makeup for it. The interlude on the Keys is quite stylish and funky. Rishabh plays the synths, and Akash Sawant is the mix/master engineer.

12. Ekla Chalo

Singer: Hanita Bhambri

Music: Kanishk Seth

Lyrics: Hussain Haidry

Original Composition by Rabindranath Tagore

Language: Hindi

Genre: Alt-Pop

Mood: Inspiring/Anthem

Kanishk Seth takes a precious song and turns it into something very impressive here. The original composition of 'Ekla Chalo Re' by Rabindranath Tagore is more than 100 years old, but its message is still relevant, such is the genius of the man. Kanishk makes it great for consumption for the present age with some terrific production, arrangements.

Hanita Bhambri after some excellent indie creations gets an opportunity to shine in this Amazon Web Series called "Big Girls Don't Cry". I did an IG reel doing a full album review recently and this is one of the best on the album. The keys, rhythms and electric guitar stood out with some exceptional contributions from the brilliant Bhushan Chitnis. Hussain Haidry writes the inspiring lyrics. When we get to the chorus segment we have some uplifting bass guitars, acoustic guitars and Devashir Manohar's backing vocals. Hanita mixes some aggression with calmness in her delivery and the introduction of the flute by Adwait Kashikar works very well, especially closer to the outro. Samarth Srinivasan is responsible for the wonderful orchestral arrangements. The tracks are mixed by Devang Rachh

13. Ae Watan Mere Watan

Music- Akashdeep Sengupta

Singer- Romy

Lyrics- Darab Farooqui

Music Produced and Arranged by Sparsh Agrawal

Language: Hindi

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Patriotic

Kindly go check out my review of the whole album "Ae Watan Mere Watan" and I did give an excellent rating of 4.25/5 for the songs. Theer are 3 songs I loved in the album, which have different composers for the songs. This song is by a composer I have liked as a young talent over the last couple of years, Akashdeep Sengupta.

He brings in ace singer Romy to deliver the vocals, and Romy shows that he has what it takes to mesmerise and inspire an audience in pure Sukhwinder Singh-esque style. The melody is written to evoke nationalistic pride, and the lyrics send the string message of Patriotism so kudos to Akashdeep and Darab Farooqui for the tune and lyrics. Let us not however forget to thank and appreciate Sparsh Agrawal for the arrangements and production, without which the song could well have fallen short of its target.

Ishan Das is a usual suspect on guitars and along with that the non-stop thumping of percussion makes this song energetic. Dipesh Varma excels in all the live rhythms and arrangement of percussions. AM.AN, Ashwin Kulkarni and Akashdeep Sengupta provide wonderful support on backing vocals. When Romy sings on a higher scale like this, even the dispassionate will feel urges to sing along.

Tapas Roy can be heard playing the strokes and Dilshad Khan is on the captivating Sarangi Solo. It carries into the interlude and the emotions run high as a result. The verse continues to impress with a very delightful and hummable melody. The recording engineers are Rahul Sharma and Samir Dharap at Studio 504, Avdhoot Wadkkar at @AsiaMusicVision and Gaurab Chakraborty. The mix/master engineer is Ashwin Kulkarni at Shraanti Studios

14. Ruse

Performed by Aanchal Bordoloi

Written by Aanchal Bordoloi

Language: English

Genre: Blues Pop

Mood: Relaxed

Aanchal Bordoloi is a rare commodity, in the world of imitators and half-baked artists. She is a blessed vocalist and the moment you listen to the song, you will agree with me within the first 1 minute. The song is part of her new EP, and I did a couple of songs, but believe that this song 'Ruse' does justice to her true potential. She launches herself vocally and moves from 0 to 100 in quick time.

There are just the acoustic guitars as an accompaniment and what we get is a heartfelt and splendid vocal performance. The melody is simple and the production is minimal but, if you just turn up the volume and listen to Aachal's words and singing, you will be moved.

@aanchalbordoloi

15. Saiyyan Beiman

Singer: Monali Thakur

Composer: Saptak Sanai Das

Lyricist: Dhrubojyoti Chakraborty

Arrangement and programming: Chandranive Shaha

Language: Bangla

Genre: Light music/Pop

Mood: Romantic

The melody of a Bangla song is typically maintained here, with notes that just touch the heart. Monali Thakur glorifies the song with her vocals and she only magnifies the beauty also created by Saptak Sanai Das who composed this. When I hear this there are fragments of Rag Bilawal, especially in the chorus segment and in the pre-chorus, maybe some Raag Hamsadhwani. The song is bound to brighten your day when you look for company amidst the gloom.

Sandeep plays the Esraj to moisten our eyes, and with the Tabla, guitars and Keys we get a good interlude, to lead into the verse. Chandranive Shaha needs to appreciate for getting the beautiful arrangements in place. Try and hear the Piano in the background during the verse and the song becomes even more beautiful as we progress thanks to some fine production. Dhrubojyoti Chakraborty is the lyricist and we have the tracks mixed and mastered by Annreeju Ray with assistance from Anindit Roy.

16. Oh Madam

Song Composed Arranged and Programmed By: Gopi Sundar

Lyrics: Bhaskarabhatla

Singer: Anurag Kulkarni

Additional Programming: Rajath Raveendran

Language: Telugu

Genre: Light Music/Pop

Mood: Romantic

This is one song that I am featuring purely owing to the beautiful verse. The pre-chorus segment ( Pallavi and anupallavi) is decent and one would have expected even more from Gopi Sundar. He has composed, arranged and programmed for the song and all these elements are there for us to hear. Anurag Kulkarni is roped in to be the male lead vocalist and he does a fine job. Bhaskarabhatla is the lyricist.

The guitars, Mandolin and Ukulele by Durwin D'souza stand out as the main instrumental support for me in this song. Rajath Raveendran comes in for all the additional programming and Srikrishna Vishnubhotla is the vocal supervisor. Haritha Raj plays the delightful Electric Veena in the second interlude and here comes the favourite part of the stanza "Naa Oopirantha Nee pera Raastha" with Haritha playing the Veena in the background. Here Anurag Kulkarni just makes the heart melt with his singing. The recording engineer is Srinath Komanduri, with Music Production Managers Babu Velayudhan, Kirti Kurumala and Priya Nair. The mix/master engineer is Sai Prakash

17. Shaamil

Performed by Rahi

Written by Rahi Sayed

Produced by Tallz

Language: Hindi

Genre: Alt-Pop

Mood: Romantic

Rahi from Kashmir is a wonderful musician, and I have featured this singer-songwriter a few times for some fantastic singles. This too is worth your time as Rahi exhibits some passionate vocal abilities, especially in the higher pitch. The guitars by Rhythm Shaw stand out like an umbrella on a sunny day. I was blown away recently by this man's abilities at a show in NMACC when Kaushiki Chakraborty performed in March.

Karan Jhaveri (Tallz) does brilliantly as the producer getting some solid arrangements on the electric guitars and drums. There are also keys coming in and intervening. The electric guitar riffs combine amazingly with the thumping drums as we head to the bridge section and the song grows on you. Suechta Bhattacharjee is the vocal coach and mentor for Rahi in this song. The artwork is by Ritik Gupta.

18. Ranjna

Performed by Karan Randhawa

Written by Micheal

Produced by Meavin

Language: Punjabi

Genre: Folk Pop Fision

Mood: Energetic

I just love the energy and fusion of this song. Wow, did I just come up with this brilliant line, having fusion and energy in the same line but in reverse order? The folkish Punjabi bit starts off and before you know it we get a pumped-up pop/dance refurbishment that just lights up the room. The song is performed by Karan Randhawa as part of his new album and this

The melody is written by Michael with such a juicy production by Meavin. The Esraj probably intervenes with some heavy rhythm programming in the interlude and it all works just fine.
