1. Nothing New
Written and Composed by Anoushka Maskey
Vocals: Anoushka Maskey
Produced by Sudan
Language: English
Genre: Pop
Mood: Immersive
There is nothing new here! Anoushka Maskey comes along and serenades you with her voice and stupifies you with the abilities she possesses as a vocalist to improvise and add vibrato. All I am saying is that if you have been listening to this amazing artist, you know what she is capable of, so there is nothing new. The vocalisation, the scat-singing as they say, is beautiful in the intro and you are drawn immediately by the charm in her voice. Her writing is fantastic and has so much to say, mean and hint at with lines like "I'm sorry I hate you, but I don't really, you're just where trauma resides".
Listen to the tremble and vocal improvisation when she utters the word "hide" in the line " like you've nothing to hide" as she hides so much vocal prowess just within that one word. Sudan is the producer and he keeps the riffs going on the Keys, but introduces the sound of the marching drums in the pre-chorus segment. The chorus segment ends and we get to a loaded interlude with Anoushla's humming and some nice rhythms and bass. We get a beautifully arranged Accordion here that replicates the notes of the humming.
As we get to the second verse, the writing, singing, and arrangements get an elevation effect as well. The riddled writing deserves appreciation, and it is never mundane like how most songwriters do. Look at the beautiful lines "Don't it feel like the end of a movie, your favourite is dead, it's just like they said". Her improvisation reaches a pinnacle with the subtle, soft but succulent touches at the end of the line, "the plot's not the point of the story". Sudan gets the Organ Piano effect at the end of this verse, and the rhythms and keys combine to create a mesmerising effect.
The tempo drops slowly, and we are treated to a breezy electric guitar solo, and the bridge section comes to make one final mark. The pauses create such awe as well, and as you can hear her sing " cause I'll want to go where the winds blow", there is no stopping Anoushka.

2. IVAL
Music Composed and Produced by Harish Venkat & Prashanth Techno Vocals: Pradeep Kumar
Lyrics: Harish Venkat & Johnny D’Souza
Language: Tamil
Genre: Light Music/ Symphony
Mood: Immersive
Prashant Techno and Harish Venkat call themselves 'Madley Blues' and I have loved their work whenever it gets released. The last time these guys delivered a sumptuous album was called "Story Of Things' released on Sony Liv. Please do check out this fantastic work before you listen to this song so that you get an idea about their capabilities. This song is from a new movie album, "Cninnadha Oru Padam", and they rope in the mesmerising Pradeep Kuma to lend his golden vocals.
Josh Mark Raj plays the rhythm guitar, and with John Praveen's basslines, we hear Pradeep serenading us with 'Ival'. Pradeep's song from a few years ago is globally a super hit and was called Aval, meaning 'that girl'(composed by Santhosh Narayanan). I am certain that this song, too, which means 'this girl', will captivate everyone's hearts. The duo of Harish and Prashanth get the motifs going on keys and those ravishing strings decorate the background sound. FAME's Studio Orchestra play the strings with the legendary Andrew T Mackay on Orchestra Coordination.
I love the writing "Senthamizh Kavidhai Ival, Uyir sernthidum kaditham ival" with the string arrangements rising and falling like waves of altering amplitude. B Prasanna waves some of his magic, preparing the score, and this is a crucial element that elevates this song multifold. Things are always kept minimal in terms of the sound design and production, and that allows the listener to feel Harish and Johnny DSouza's words and Pradeep's singing. Like he sings " Ival mugam malarnthidum", the arrangements bloom rather than explode.
The song, with its melody and tone, does remind me of AR Rahman's 'Thoda Thoda" from the album 'Indira', and maybe that is why I sense some Shankarabharanam Raga influences. The solo violin in the interlude is followed by woodwinds, and this interlude has all the makings of musical geniuses at work. All the string arrangements enter an exhilarating phase towards the outro, leaving us wanting more. The recording, mixing and mastering is handled by Navneeth Balachanderan at DBounce Studios.

3. Santhatha Sakhiye
Music Composed and Produced by: Bibin Ashok
Lyrics: Vaisakh Sugunan
Singer: KS Harisankar
Language: Malayalam
Genre: Light Music / Pop
Mood: Romantic
Am I feeling my feet lifting off the ground? Quite certainly, because that is what happens when you listen to KS Harisaankar perform. He delivers this with one unfazed aura, and the romance and promise his voice carries immediately drops an anchor deep inside your heart. Harisankar is accompanied by backing vocalists Arun Ashok and Bibin Ashok. The melody is beautifully composed by Bibin, and he also does a fine job on the arrangements and music production. I can feel that stylish and playful plucks played by Anurag Rajeev Nayan.
Where is my heart soaring? Into the heavens, I guess, when he sings "Neelanjana kannazhage, neehara nilavazhage", and how Hari adds beauty to every note with his gahmakas. It is during this chord progression that I got reminded of Santhosh Narayanan's 'Mayanadhi'. Vaisagh Sugunan pens the beautiful words. The Sarod adds that mild pathos, and it is played effortlessly by Prashekh Borkar; I think to myself that the melody has influences of Raag Darbari. But Harisankar tells me it is Miaki Malhar
The charanam is where Hari reaches for the depths of his vocal range, and the melody in the line "Iru hridayavum shalabhamay, pranayamanasa valiyilaliyum neramay, lolamaay" feels magnetic. This whole segment is rich, and it takes me back to Maestro's "Agaya Vennilave". Let us also appreciate the fantastic motifs we keep hearing in the background on the Middle Eastern string instrument, Qanun, played by Onur Cicin. The tracks are mixed by Kishan Sreebal and mastered by Harishankar V. Akshay is the recording engineer.

4. Khafah Toh Nahi
Music: Shubham Shirule
Lyrics: Shubham Shirule
Singer: Suvarna Tiwari
Programmed by: AM.AN
Language: Hindi
Genre: Tumri-fusion
Mood: Immersive
I did quite enjoy the album, with music by various artists, but this one was the pick of the album for me. The song is composed and written by Shubham Shirule, someone I have featured multiple times for his indie projects. The song carries the tranquillity and depth of Tumri/Ghazal flavours, along with the western instrumental arrangements as well. AM.AN does all the programming with Akashdeep Sengupta on music supervision for all songs of the album 'Rangeen'.
The voice of Suvarna Tiwari is like a breath of fresh air, amidst all the mess and suffocation around in the name of music. The riffs of the guitar and Keys set the tone, and with Suvarna's line "Khafa toh nahi hai, tumse piya re", the enchantment begins. Is there some Raag Yaman in the melody? Maybe. "Meri pukare lazmeen hai, naraz na ho", when she sings it the second time, has some wonderful notes written that immediately brought a smile to my face. The harkatein and attitude in her delivery is exemplary to so many youngsters. Momin Khan gives us a breezy Sarangi solo with his interventions.
Chinmay Deore playfully performs on the Tabla, and Tapas Roy is on the Tar(Strokes). The beautiful aalap in the interlude Suvarna makes you go into oblivion, and the antara is just an extension of the beautiful melody we heard in the sthayi. Ishan Das is the guitarist, and Sahil Masih is the bassist, giving some cool quotient in the background. The vocal conductors are Palak Mohan and DigV, and all the tracks are mixed and mastered by AM.AN. There are times when I also hear influences and sparks of Bilawal Thaat.

5. Pardesiya
Music: Sachin-Jigar
Singer: Sonu Nigam, Krishnakali Saha & Sachin-Jigar
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Programmed & Arranged: Sachin - Jigar
Language: Hindi
Genre: Light Music
Mood: Romantic
Sometimes I don't pay too much attention to the hype that I see around in movies and music because it is mostly overreaction and misplaced. So when I heard about this song, I had some reservations because people were going mad over it. Within a few seconds, I realised that the song deserves a lot of attention for sure. Sachin-Jigar have composed this beautiful melody that sticks to the Darbari scale (if I'm not wrong). For more than 70 years, we in South cinema have been exposed to this style of light music where songs are composed with a classical raga base, but the arrangements and tonalities are altered to suit the tastes of a larger audience.
In Bollywood, this has stopped happening in the last 20 years after AR Rahman, Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Anyway, another reason for this song sounding so terrific is thanks to the vocalists and the moment it is not Arijit Singh in the lead vocals department, the song sounds fresh and new. Sonu Nigam is beyond compare, especially in the romantic genre, and he sings along with Krishnakali Saha. We get some fabulous backing vocals in the form of Jathis performed by Anandi-Aheeri and Sahil. This is probably to showcase the south indian lineage of the heroine in the movie.
The rhythms are catchy, and when you have Sonu singing this beautiful Raag, very little can go wrong. Krishnakali is in killer mode too, as her voice feels like drops of honey dripping straight to our hearts through the ears. I have featured her a couple of times in indie projects, and this sensational performance is going to open many doors for her. All the additional programming is by Sahil Vishwakarma, who also plays the guitar here. Naveen Kumar's flute solo is an additional highlight of the song that just makes the song feel even more transcendental. The interlude has the backing vocalists performing this beautifully written line "pardesia hai teri batiyon ne kiya pareshan pardesiya".
To get this far sometimes is easy, but what makes Sachin-Jigar achieve something praiseworthy is the way they build on the melody in the Antara, and it sweetens the deal even more now. Listen to "Haan Choo ke labon se jaise jaadu hi kar diya" and when we hear Krishnakali, it feels she has, in fact, created some magic. The final proceedings in the Antara are dealt with by the master Sonu, and Darbari comes to the fore in all its beauty in "Aasaan ho aage safar, tum saath mera chun lo agar". Amitabh Bhattacharya is the man behind all these beautiful words. Swar Mehta is the recording engineer, and the tracks are mixed and mastered by Eric Pillai.
6. Cringe Song
Singer: Malayali Monkeys
Back Vocalist: Abhiraman, Earthgrime
Music Director: Malayali Monkeys
Lyricist: Vinayak Sasikumar, Malayali Monkeys
Language: Malayalam
Genre:
Mood:
This song from the recent Malayalam movie "Apoorva Puthranmar" is one heck of a track that is groovy, peppy and creates absolute ecstasy when we hear it. I loved what they did with Jay Unnithan's song in 'Maranamass' and now this is composed and performed by the 3 members of the band. Abhiraman and Earthgrime join on backing vocals, and we have Vinayak Sasikumar penning the words along with the trio.
After the intro, we hear some audio from a live performance with just the rhythm guitar. After that, it is just a crazy ride with energising keys and rhythms. "Tharanam nee tharanam, date night poka nee thanna venam, late night chat til blue tick venam" is a line that keeps playing in my mind for the notations and harmonious vocals. TJUS handles the stunning music production that stays true to the genre. We get some Kazoo in the interlude with a lot of vocalisation and lines spoken in the background.
The charanam is filled with witty lines and some engrossing keys and synths in the background. The melody touches your heart, and amidst all the groovy bits, this line "singlea njaan aane, virgina marikka eniki vaiyya" is the cherry on the top. For all the tone, messaging and style, the song reminds me of AR Rahman's "Enakku Oru Girlfriend" from the album 'Boys'. The tracks are mixed by Deepak SR and mastered by JK factor.

7. Kahani Meri
Vocals: Sonu Nigam
Lyrics: Ritesh G Rao and Sonu NIgam
Composed and Arranged by PVNS Rohit
Language: Hindi
Genre: Semi-classical Pop
Mood: Immersive
PVNS Rohit will be a very well-known name by the time this gets published, as this talented singer won the National Awards for the Best Male Playback singer for the year 2023, which was released just recently. I have been fond of his fantastic singing, and here I am featuring a song composed and arranged by him, it features a mammoth called Sonu Nigam. The aalap in the intro straightaway tells you that the melody belongs to Raag Bhageshree.
The Sarangi by Momin Khan hits you hard, and it blends in a certain amount of pathos along with the uber-stylish bass guitars by Rhythm Shah. He also plays the acoustic and electric guitars. The heart starts melting without further ado as he sings "kahani meri kahan ja rahi hai, mujhe na khabar". The use of the Tabla (by Ojas Adhiya) and drums (by Ebenezer Paul), is a great union, and it perfectly fits this semi-classical fusion number. The beauty of Raag Bhageshree continues to weave around us as Rohit delicately gets the melody arranged with the solo on the Sarangi, and this time, we get a whiff of the Kanjira as well. Vikram Venkatapuram handles all the rhythm supervision and Cajon.
We get enamoured and caught in this web as Sonu tantalises us with "khud mein hi main kho gaya hain hoon kyun". The backing vocals tend to elevate the effect as the lines by Ritesh Rao sparkle and convey the message of love. "Tere liye choda hain maine, yeh sara jahaan". The energy of the drums and the wonderment from Sonu's harkatain work beautifully in tandem. The alaap comes on like an interlude, and we get a key change with harmonies to give an energetic end to the track. All the programming and sound design by Vedala Hemachandra, with Rakesh Chary on Additional programming. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Aftab Khan at Headroom Studio, Mumbai.

8. Nadhive
Music Composed, Arranged And Sung By Hesham Abdul Wahab
Lyrics: Rakendu Mouli
Language: Telugu
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
It is nice to see Hesham Abdul Wahab back in form, and this time it is for a Telugu movie album, "The Girlfriend". I'll be eagerly awaiting the release of other singles, and this first single is invigorating and refreshing enough to get featured among the best this week. Rakendu Mouli pens the lyrics, and the song is composed, performed and arranged by Hesham. The intro features these Keys and programmed strings that keep expectations high. When Hesham sings " Gunde Kannumoosina Vidhi Raadina", the song feels like it is instilling some nitroboosters into our bloodstream. The chorus segment that follows "Nadhive Nuu Nadhive" feels like a perennial river flowing.
All the additional programming is by Antony and Vichuuuh Human. Sumesh Parameswar is elevating the song's style quotient with his bass and acoustic guitar. Hesham lets the sound of the Shehnai breeze through in the interlude, and the charanam becomes increasingly hypnotic as we progress. The chord progression on the line "etu kadalani nimisham nulimina gonthukavaa" with the accompanying keys is priceless. This song is a feel-good number that ticks every possible box in terms of melody, vocals, and arrangements. Harishankar V is the mixing and mastering engineer at Aural Alchemy Studio, assisted by Santom and Sarath. Music Coordination is done by KD Vincent.

9. Julie
Performed by AtharvaMusic and Janisht Joshi
Written and composed by AtharvaMusic
Produced by Dwai
Genre: Synth Pop
Language: Hindi
Mood: Romantic/Energetic
The intro with the keys, guitars, and rhythms is an instant sell, and I am hooked, and that is what song creators work on. But soon enough, when the melody is written with some shabby quality, it goes astray. Well, not for Julie and the creators AtharvaMusic, Janisht Joshi and Dwai who have given us a fine single here. The chorus is like a ladder that lifts your spirits.
The vocals create a mild shiver (in a good way) and the singing in the baritone register feels endearing and reassuring that we have some good vocalists around. Just before we get to the chorus segment, we hear Gini's vocals in the background singing like a soprano. The chorus segment has this very hummable melody, and that is what sticks in the mind. But the melody composed by AtharvaMusic goes far beyond that, and the chord progression in "Mujrim main tumhara" is a testament to that. The melody at times takes me back to "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys.
As we continue into the second verse, we are now dancing to it and feel Gini intervening, singing like a star, " sitaron mein likha". The synth pop style is catchy and takes us back to the good old 1990s. I love the collective vocals on "Julie Julie Julie Maan ja" as if the entire crowd is asking her to say yes, and this bit has the effect of "They don't care about us " by Michael Jackson, or "We will rock you" by Queen, thanks to the claps and beats.

10. Akkalu Bakkalu
Music Composer and Producer - Rajesh Murugesan
Lyrics - Mohan Rajan
Singers - Sean Roldan, Rajesh Murugesan
Language: Tamil
Genre: Synth Pop
Mood: Dance
It has been a productive period for Rajesh Murugesan, who has released several notable albums in Malayalam, and now he has composed a Tamil album titled 'Housemates'. This song is upbeat and creates the perfect setting for dance and fervour. Unlike what many today celebrate as bangers, where there is just a lot of noise and programmed cacophony, Rajesh Murugesan and Sea Oldan combine to give a song that one can sing as well as dance to.
Listen to the intro Keys as they take you directly to the dance pop of the 1990s. Sean Roldan is in blistering form, with his amazing vocals, and it looks like he is having a ball, too, performing this track. Rajesh is also the man who has produced the song, and he gets some enticing arrangements done on keys, synths and rhythms in the song. Mohan Rajan is the lyricist who gets some witty writing going on. The chorus/title segment with all the backing vocalists is one of the finest segments of the song that sticks in your head for a long time.
Aarabhi Ramakrishnan, Bhargavi Ramakrishnan, Shravan Swaminathan, Ritik. R and Asyashree Seshubhogi of Dr. Sudha Raja's SARGAM Choir are performing here. The lyrics bring about a mild humour, and when Sean and the chorus sing it alternately, it sounds like many voices are advising the protagonist in trouble, like when he sings " pudichava kooda irunthum, sirikka mudiyala" followed by " kanukka theriya enemey ivana thoratha mudiyala". Sean reaches for the high-pitched lines quite well, and one of the most beautifully written and performed chord progressions comes with "atha naanum solla solla thalakeezha nedunaala, thavichene vavvala nimmathi inge ille". The song gives me the vibes of 'Bad' by Michael Jackson.
The tracks are mixed and mastered by Balu Thankachan at 20dB Black, with session assisted by Paul Daniel & Sreenivasa Sharma. Suroor Mustahfa assist in the song production session @ OnTempo Studios. The recording engineers are Hariharan Arulmurugan and Paul Daniel at 20db Studios Chennai and Sound Rights Studios Chennai.
