1. Ek Baar Phir

Singer and Composer: Monali Thakur

Lyricist: Kunaal Vermaa

Music Producer: Keshav Tyohar

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Monali Thakur comes along and gives this fantastic song, and when i least expected because in all these years I have only known her as a performer with a unqiue and gifted voice. But here she composes a melody that stuns you with its intricate writing, and the chord progression is fresh and also keeps you guessing. Kunaal Vermaa is the lyricist, and Keshav Tyohar is the music producer. Her singing in the line with the pauses and the accompanying Piano feels pristine when we hear “Jan Tum guzre, galiyon se mere” and I would have never expected the subsequent lines “Bikhre huye..Dil ko mere..Mehka gaye..Mausam tere”. Keshav brings on the Retro feeling with the live percussion that gets introduced in the chorus segment.

Is there some influence of Raag Bihag, or maybe anything in the Bilawal Thaat? Maybe. I am enamored and feeling full in my heart when I hear the amazing chorus segment composed by Monali, “ Aaya hai kisi pe yaaron dil ..Haan ji haan.. Aa gaya hai dil..Ek baar...Ek baar phir”. The song has the old-world charm with its structure now following a mukda-antara pattern, and Keshav aids by keeping the production to a minimal effect. The choice of live percussion, played by Arun Solanki,  is apt to give us that feeling of nostalgia. “Neend aa gayi, Aaye nazar Jab aap khwabon ko liye” shows how convincing and beautiful Monali can sound in the higher pitch.

She never settles for making just a couple of good lines in the melody, and the effort to give a completely stunning track is evident in the way the notes land from the antara to the mukda, for example.. “Is marz mein Sab theek hai..Dava ise na deejiye”.  Kunaal must be appreciated for writing these heartfelt lines of love. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Pankaj Borah at Neo Sound.

2. Tum Jo Ho Yahaan

Written, composed, and performed by Prateeksha Srivastava

Music produced and arranged by Akarsh Shetty

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Pathos

One of those artists who is loaded with talent, Prateeksha Srivastava, is about to release her new EP, and I cannot wait to hear the whole thing. Until then, we have to keep ourselves satiated with these singles like this excellent one, which is composed, written, and performed by Prateeksha. Austin Furtado’s rhythm guitar delightfully makes it feel like a tranquil love song in the intro. He also does all the guitar arrangements for the song. The voice is mesmerising and her mild improvisations add sprinkles of love like “jab se neenden poori hone lagi, jaane kya sukkon ka mazaa”.

It is not just her singing, which is, anyway, top-notch, but what conquers the music listener's mind is Prateeksha’s melody, and the proof of that comes about in the chords that belong to the pre-chorus lines “parayi, parayi, haan kyun na lage tum mujhe parayi kabhi”. Akarsh Shetty is the music producer, and he handles all the adequate arrangements for the song. The humming that follows the title line is a sweet lullaby, and her vocals calm you down. We get Austin playing the guitar with some finesse in the interlude, and what follows is just Prateekha’s exhibition of her talents as a singer and composer. The delicate lyrics and the slow and soothing melody gradually soak in some meaningful melancholy.

Akarsh adds the layer of strings in the background when we start hearing “ tu mila, chal pada,” which adds some gravity. The mild harmonies that embolden the lines “jagaye jagaye jo soye hue” are another example of all the perfect elements added by AKarsh as an arranger and producer. Aren't you simply haunted by this girl's ability to sing with poise? Listening to “Jaan liya Maan Liya” brings out the tears in me. Akarsh Shetty plays the e; electric guitars and is also the mixing and mastering engineer. The inclusion of the drums in the outro feels like fresh bursts of energy that prepare us for the ending of the amazing song. The video is shot by Priya Mishra.

3. Baarish Mein Phir

Performed by : Saahel

Lyrics/composer : Saahel

Produced by: Saahel

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Immersive

Saahel’s middle name must be ‘consistency’, and to me he is one of our most promising talents as a singer-songwriter. There is nostalgia and relatability as we hear the combined effect of the Tabla and the lashing sound of rains in the intro. Can you feel the intensity when he sings “ narmi si hawaaein, beh rahi kab se” with the mild harkatein and the rhythm guitar to accompany. The song is composed, written, performed, and produced by Saahel, and he continues to blow me away with his stunning voice and abilities to go solo on al these projects.

“Keh Do na tum, aankhon se tum, saansen ye kyun chale na chale na, choo lo na tum, barso na tum, baarish mein phir, jale na jale na” is a beautifully crafted line with such poise in the chord progression, especially with the notes at the end of the phrase like “jale na, jale na”. The use of the electric guitar and Tabla in tandem is like facing the dual rage of fire and ice, and it works just fine. The sargams in the interlude remind me of Raag Bhimplasi, and Saahel does well to execute them with finesse. The melody just keeps giving and giving as we get to the bridge section, Saahel obliterates you with the high-pitched singing in “jaane na mera dil kya chahe, yeh raahein teri takda jaaye”. A good singer-songwriter must always write wholesome melodies and allow the song to offer opportunities to showcase his/her abilities as a vocalist.

Saahel does all that here with the listener getting to know his full vocal range and also his flair for vibrato.  Listen to the line “thehri jo palkon pe khwaahish ho tum”. I am swaying and getting drenched in this rain of music. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Ashish Raitani , with the video shot by Gurpreet Singh and Alam Ansari. Faizan Khan is editing. The artwork is by Divya.

4. Dhul Gaye

Composer:- Arjuna Harjai

Lyricist: Arjuna Harjai, Surabhi Dashputra

Singer: Arijit Singh

Music producer: Arjuna Harjai

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop Ballad

Mood: Pathos

This single coming out of Arijit Singh’s label Oriyon Music really grabbed my attention when I heard it last week. It has been a while since anything this impressive has come out from the label, but Arjuna Harjai gives us a smashing single, where he co-writes the lyrics with Surabhi Dashputra. “Waqt ke hissab me kuch hisse baaqi hain,” he sings with the melancholy drooling all over. When we get to the chorus segment “Dhul Gaye” with the heavy rhythms feel haunting. My pick of the song is the line where Arjuna writes “Chodi thi jo doriyaan, Kitabon mein Adhiyaan bhi sehe gayi wo....Phir hum kyun dhul gaye” which stands out from a chord progression perspective.

The vocal chants, rhythms, along with the bass, guitars, and Keys combine to give us something that just drowns us with the sadness as well serenity of it all. “Chaand ki wo thandakien mehsus to ki thiAaj kyun Phir chaand se kurbatien nahi milti” in the antara is where we get pulled deeper into the song, and Arjuna and Surabhi must be appreciated for making this song intense and fresh, and finally something that feels amazing with Arijit’s vocals. The string section arrangements and woodwinds all have a key role to play in engaging the listener; kudos to Arjuna for being on top of this as a music producer. The tarcks are mxied and mastered by Arjuna Harjai at BAV Studios

5. Dancing with a Pisces

Sung, Composed, Written by Anika Bharwani

Produced by Tejas Menon

Language: English

Genre: Pop-Rock

Mood: Energetic

I recently reviewed the album “Five Foot Three” by Anika Bharwani, and this was easily one of the best indie albums I have heard in 2025. Anika writes the melody and lyrics, and both were facets that impressed me mightily in this album. She brought on wit, creativity, and finesse to the table as a songwriter in this entire album , with this single being no exception. The intro begins with the lush guitars and the throbbing drums by Sanket Pahurkar. Look at the funny yet meaningful lines “I usually leave parties way too soon, but the way you dance by yourself makes me want to stay in this hell”.

Tejas Menon puts his hand up as the music producer and gives us a splendid arrangement of the guitars and drums to make every cell in our body dance and evoke these surging emotions of love. The melody breathes life into the song “I want you  even if it is just for a night , even if I have to say goodbye, I just want you”. This is exemplary songwriting, and I wish young aspiring musicians listened to all this with intent and attention. Anika doesn't make it sound mundane as she writes these lines like a storytelling session with lines like “but now you're sitting in the corner of the room, reading something I won't understand, so I search it up and do the best I can”.

Anika’s use of vibrato and her flight to falseto work brilliantly and show what a performer she is. Tejas makes this a song to cherish with the Keys in the outro, and Sanket’s mindful role as the drummer is all elements that might go unnoticed, but they deserve celebration. I was wondering how the title never appeared anywhere in the song, but Anika does a final reveal in teh climax with “But I’m a Pisces, yeah, we fall too soon”. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Hersh Desai. The album art is by Ritika Singh

6. Zamaana

Vocals, composition, co-arranger : Renee Chaurasia

Lyrics : Renee Chaurasia, Pushpanjali Chaurasia

Music Production : Aryan Balani

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Trippy

This is her second single, and she is already getting better, exploring diverse genres and singing with so much more confidence and chutzpah. I love her slightly inebriated style of spoken word poetry in the intro with the keys accompanying. The song is composed and performed by Renee Chaurasia, and look at her shine and evoke the perfect tone and emotions in “bheegi  bheegi aankhen meri, phir bhi hasta hoon main”. The lyrics are written by Pushpanjali Cahuarasia and Renee, while the arrangements are coordinated between Aryan Bali, the music producer, and Renee.

The harmonies add some fine flavors, and when you hear “are anjaane se pyaar hua par dil hi to hai na”, the layers of vocals give more weight to her confusion and pain as a heartbroken protagonist. Anish Ghanekar’s saxophone intervention makes the song feel trippier. The interlude with the sax, keys, and rhythms makes me visualise like I’m on a merry-go-round, literally and metaphorically too. The tracks are recorded and mixed by Devashish Ray, with mastering by Siddhesh Shrivastava.

7. Naan Thani Pizhai

Music - Amit Trivedi

Singer - Dimple Saikia and Amit Trivedi

Lyricist - Krithika Nelson

Music Arranged and Produced by Amit Trivedi and John Paul

Language: Tamil

Genre: Jazz Pop

Mood: Groovy

There are expectations building for this Tamil movie, “Bad Girl,” which is making the rounds in most film festivals. The fact that acclaimed director Vetrimaran is producing it makes me desperate to watch it soon, and in the meantime, we do have a few singles that have been released from the album. This is my favourite thus far, composed by Amit Trivedi and performed by Dimple Saikia. The singer is from Assam, and I have featured her in a few indie projects and some work in Hindi for Amit, but this is new territory for the talented vocalist. Yet I am stunned by Dimple’s diction, and this delivery in Tamil will make many stalwarts of the past  stand up and appreciate this young girl.  Krithika Nelson (Madrashe) pens the lyrics, and the song is arranged and produced by Amit and John Paul.

ID Rao’s saxophone, the drums, and guitars jazzify the song and bring about style, but the vocals of Dimple, especially her fabulous falsetto, are unmissable. The Pianos, followed by the sax interlude, and the high-hats form a nice interludal melody before Amit himself shows how it’s done on vocals “Unnodu Naanu Mele, Parandhu Povom Mele”. The melody is simple with only a few variations, but the vocals, arrangements, especially the guitars by John Paul and ID Rao’s sax, stand out and deliver. The tracks are recorded, mixed, and mastered by Chinmay Mestry at AT Studios. Abhishek Vishnu Dandekar is the assistant sound engineer.

8. Ilakozhiye

Music Composed by Electronic Kili

Lyrics : Muthu

Vocals : Rakhoo, iSai

Music Producers : Sreerag Suresh, Electronic Kili

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Pop Ballad

Mood: Immersive

Abhijith plays the flute solo in the intro, and I am reminded of Santhosh Narayanan’s “Karkuzhal Kadavaiye” from the album ‘Vada Chennai’. This is composed by Electronic Kili with lyrics by Muthu and lead vocals by Rakhoo and iSai. The popularity of Electronic Kili as a composer and producer is slowly but steadily rising, and this one is co-produced by Sreerag Suresh and Electronic Kili.  Once the pallavi hits us, we are mesmerized by the melody and the enchanting vocals of the leads. Abhijith continues to play havoc with our hearts on the pacy flutes, and the Cochin Strings decorate the background with the string arrangements. Albin Jose, Francis Xavier,  Josekutty, Herald Antony, and Francis TS form the quintet with Albin playing the Cello as a soloist.

Suresh Krishna’s teasing Tabla and percussion provide the delicate but necessary oomph, even as Rakhoo’s humming feels ecstatic. As we come to the close of the interlude, listen to the prowess of Sumesh Parameswar on bass and Sandeep Mohan on teh acoustic guitar. The stanza ends, and the solo on the flute is once again captivating like the rest of the melody. The two lead vocalists are singing teh chorus segment in harmony, and we feel eternal bliss. The arrangements continue to peak as we head into the outro with Sandeep’s mastery on the guitar, Rakhoo’s humming of the same notes, and the Tabla to provide the rhythm. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Harishankar V at Aural Alchemy Studios, assisted on mixing by Santom & Sarath . The vocal arrangements are done by Vijayanand

9. Foolish Si Zindagi

Composer: Troy - Arif

Singer: Ajitesh Gupta

Lyricist: Raghav Dutt

Music Producer: Gibson George

Music Supervisor - Akashdeep Sengupta

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop Rock

Mood: Energetic

I really enjoyed the music of this Amazon Prime series “Rangeen” and after featuring a single a couple of weeks ago, here is another fantastic single. The intro delivers all the heavy-duty music you need with the Pianos and guitars by Udayan Dharmadhikari and the reverberating drums. The funky elements like that solo on the electric guitar just oozes quality, and this shows promise for Bollywood music, which is usually lacking ideas and freshness. Ajitesh Gupta has a very zany vocal presence, and he sings with that casual attitude. Raghav Dutt writes the lyrics as Troy-Arif composes the melody for this single. Troydin and Gibson George must be appreciated for handling all the effective arrangements, with the latter taking responsibility for music production.

The excruciating pain that the protagonist feels is transferred through Ajitesh’s delivery and the combination of teh electric guitar and drums as well. Akashdeep Sengupta serves as the music supervisor for the series, and Aftab handles the mixing and mastering.

10. Naane Neenantha

Music: Arjun Janya

Singers: Sid Sriram & Lahari Mahesh

Lyricist: Shashank

Language: Kannada

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

Arjun Janya creates these striking melodies that are amped by some fantastic production. This Kannada single from BRAT, the album,  is sung by Sid Sriram and Lahari Mahesh. The guitars and their arrangements remind me of Maestro Ilaiyaraja’s works. David Selvam plays the classical, electric, and acoustic guitars while the insanely talented Naveen Napier is the bassist. As we head to the anupallavi of the song, we get a rock-style flavour thanks to the electric guitars accompanying. The melody seems like Raag Keeravani to me. The heavy rhythms add to the energy, and they are programmed by Aneesh Solomon, with Keyboard programming done by David Selvam.  The interlude has a soothing flute played by Sathish, and then Kishore follows up with a Sitar solo. All this happens with Chennai Strings Orchestra playing the stunning strings in the background.

During the charanam , Nellai Balaji, conducting the strings, and David Selvam, arranging the strings, simply sizzle, and we experience these counterpoints. Akash’s solo violin is in terrific form, with the melody in the second interlude. Lahari Mahesh joins in the second charanam, and her vocal range is tested, only for her to come out with flying colours. The sweetness in her voice is nothing short of sugar. Shenbagaraj, Sai Charan, Hema, Sowmya, and Kamalaja are the backing vocalists.  The recording engineer is Nishan Rai at Om Shakthi Studio, Bengaluru. The tracks are mixed and mastered by David Selvam.
