Here are the best songs released in India across languages and genres for the week ending 9th June 2024

1. Sooseki

Music: Rockstar Devi Sri Prasad (DSP)

Singer: Shreya Ghoshal

Lyrics: Chandrabose

Language: Telugu

Genre: Folk Pop

Mood: Dance

The movie album of "Pushpa 1: The Rise" was a major hit, although I did not like it entirely. There were moments where the songs did create awe, but it was limited. This song from "Pushpa 2: The Rule", was a blinder and it does make me realise why Devi Sri Prasad (DSP) does live up to the name of 'Rockstar'. The melody is rich, especially in the verse and if there is one song in recent times when Shreya Ghoshal has utilised her fullest potential, then this is that song!

The heavy percussion effect is thanks to rhythms by Kalyan. I get a wonderful whiff of harmonies by SP Abhishek, like the terrific AR Rahman song "Rukumani Rukumani" from 'Roja'. This song immediately generates the adrenaline rush and one wants to get up and dance. Balesh does a splendid solo on the Shehnai, and usually, this instrument creates an effect of pathos, but here the mood is anything but sad. I love the Jathi vocals by DSP just before the verse and into the stanza. Shreya is killing it with her diction and delivery as she exudes loads of attitude in the singing.

The way she ends the stanza with "Srevallikku Thelisu", and the gorgeous vibrato is outstanding. The lyrics is written by Chandrabose. Vikas Badisa is the keyboardist, DSP plays the Banjo, Saroja is on the Dilruba in the second interlude and the creative Frets are played by the talented Vagu Mazan. Kudos to DSP for envisioning the arrangements and executing them brilliantly. I am hoping and betting that Shreya wins accolades for this performance. Lalit Talluri plays the flute in the outro and Manikandan is the bassist. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Uday Kumar.

2. Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

Singer: Johaan Thekkan & Dhruvi Singh

Lyrics: Dhruvi Singh

Composer: Johaan Thekkan

Music Production: Johaan Thekkan - J & D Media Labs

Language: Hindi

Genre: Alt-Rock

Mood: Energetic

Dhruvi Singh sent me her song recently on my IG account and I waited a while before I finally heard it. All I can say is that it was worth the wait. This is composed by Johaan Thekkan and the vocalists are Dhruvi and Johaan. The energetic Alt-Rock song pushed up the adrenaline levels and I least expected it when the song began. Abel Seliang is mesmerising with his guitar solo in the intro, and things are extremely mild and mellow with the great accompaniments of the Piano, strings section and harmonies all combining beautifully.

I must salute Johaan for excellently arranging and producing the song. If Johaan's vocals were soothing, Dhruvi pushes up the sensitivity with some aggressive oomph. Mayank Sharma is having a ball with the drums and he creates moments of magic on his own in the background. The solo on the electric guitar is breathtaking and after a brief episode of calmness the drums and guitars explode onto the scene giving away a face-melting show. The arrangements of the strings section in the outro is another spectacle. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Urmila Sutar.

3. Tu Hain Toh

Music Composer – Hunny, Bunny

Lyricist – Sagar

Singer – Bunny & Sagar

Music Supervisor – Azeem Dayani

Language: Hindi

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

This was the only song in the new Bollywood album "Mr and Mrs Mahi" that deserved attention and praise. The rest of the album is an utter disappointment, but I'm thankful that this breezy song managed to keep my spirits up. Hunny-Bunny wrote the melody of the song and that to me was the highlight of the song, and with vocals performed by Hunny-Bunny and Sagar we get a heartwarming number. Raag Yaman is chosen for this melody and the influences help weave a hummable and pacifying melody. The guitar strumming is an accompaniment all along and, when they work their magic in the background the impact of dual male voices also creates awe and mesmerism, especially when the melody is performed as a humming.

The verse is a continuation of the splendid melody as they sing " Main musafir, Tu musafir", and it feels like an engrossing Tumri that never leaves the mind. Paras Nath joins on with the flute solo towards the second interlude and I love that the melody that he plays is different from any of the notes we hear in the song. Kudos to Hunny-Bunny for the composition and we have talented musicians Azeem Dayani as music supervisor and Manish Natekar as associate music supervisor. Eric Pillai at Future Sound of Bombay is the mixing and mastering engineer, with mix assistant Michael Edwin Pillai.

4. Jiya Mera

Singers: Garvit Soni, Priyansh Srivastava

Composers: Garvit - Priyansh

Lyricist: Priyansh Srivastava, Yashasvi Chaturvedi

Language: Hindi

Genre: Light Music/ Pop fusion

Mood: Romantic

I can go on and on and praise this duo endlessly. I have so much faith in the work of Garvit-Priyansh that I would place a hefty bet that any new release of theirs would get featured among the best of Indian most in that week. This is their new EP called "Lafz" and I am doing a full EP review subsequently, with this mostly being the best of the collection. Garvit Soni and Priyansh Srivastava enthral us with their distinct voices that tilt towards the Indian Classical style.

This melody is composed by the duo and has a tinge of Raag Hamsadhwani. The enchanting lyrics are written by Yashaswi Chaturvedi and Priyansh. The way the vocals decorate and elevate the song in " Tanha mein Tere bina" adds great vibrato and aalap-styled delivery into the mix. It is not all just heavy classical tones, as the duo create a Pop texture with lines like "Hone wala hai naya savera, neend phir bhi mujko kyun na aaye re?". The keys and rhythm programming are top-notch, with Aditya Kulkarni making us feel bliss in that brisk interlude. That segment sounds like the electric Veena, kudos to Aditya for such a brilliant solo exhibition in the interlude.

The melody is also never that easily predictable when the duo get cracking, and the proof is in the line in the verse " Teri aankhon mein tha kuch aisa nasha". This is just first-class pop fusion music, and I urge you all to listen to the whole EP. Srijan Mangolu is the Atmos Mix and Master engineer.

5. Aa Rojulu Malli Raavu

Music Composed & Arranged by Anudeep Dev

Singer: Karthik

Lyricist: Krishna Kanth (K.K)

Language: Telugu

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

I have been fond of Anudeep Dev's songs over the last couple of years, and he is particularly good with romantic singles. Anudeep writes the melody, while Krishna Kanth pens the lyrics. The song scores quite well when it comes to the arrangements and production as well, with a very delightful array of live instruments, so kudos to Anudeep for that too. The intro has the Sarangi and then the flute solo by Pramod Umapathi, which softens the heart and pulverizes it at the same time.

Karthik serenades us with his typical gentle tone, and he is aided by Keba Jeremiah and Joel Sastry on guitars. I love the anupallavi when the rhythms by Kalyan suddenly start becoming more catchy and peppy. Keba also plays the Ukulele, bass and electric guitars in the song. The highlight is clearly the chorus segment with a large collective effort by singers viz. Sindhuja Srinivasan, Lakshmi Meghana, Maneesha Pandranki, Nada Priya, Vagdevi, Ritesh, Harsha, Prakash, Vinayak, Akhil Chandra and Jayanth Madhur.

I am impressed with Anudeep's melody that he has written in the interlude, and things keep getting better like the stanza. The part where he starts singing "Cheppa latte" has a beautiful ring to it especially thanks to the clap sounds. Ebenezer Paul plays the Piano as well as the strings that we hear in the background. The recording is done by Anudeep and Rakesh at Quirky Vox Studios, Hyderabad and The Sound Dock, Hyderabad. The tracks are mixed by Abin Paul and mastered by Shadab Rayeen.

6. Chalte Hai Wahan

Written & Performed by -Sparsh Jain

Music Production - Sparsh Jain

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Happy

Sparsh Jain is successful in transporting me to the place he wants to take me to, and hence when he sings " Chalte Hai Wahan" I am packed and ready to go! The brisk guitar strumming by Sparsh and drums by Francesca Pratt are so inviting and the multiple layers of guitars and Banjo (maybe) are beautiful like different shades of the water in the same ocean. Dan G accompanies as the bassist and he does generate some necessary oomph.

Once we get to the chorus segment the melody and production are so uplifting and it feels like we are on a joyride towards this enchanting place. Sparsh handles the production and he does a fabulous job just like his energetic vocal performance. The Sarangi solo is a programmed input and it works in giving a mild sense of longing to the listener, or maybe a depiction of travel to a land of great folk music like Rajasthan. Sparsh also writes a very hummable and refreshing melody, and I love the verse where the lines go " Sachi samjhi saazish hai, sunn na kya dil raaz hai".

The return of the chorus segment towards the end and then the humming is a delightful outro for the song. This is probably the most suited and chirpy road trip/travel song I have heard in the last 2 months. The mixing of tracks is done by Sparsh and Vishal Sharma, with the latter also taking responsibility for recording at Soundlabs Studios. Gethin John and Hafod Mastering is the mastering engineer.

7. Omg (stripped version)

Performed by Anika, sudan

Written by sudan

Produced by sudan, Nathan Thampy

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Sudan a.k.a NotSudan on IG is about to release his full-length album in June, with 13 songs in the collective, and I cannot wait. In the meantime, I wanted to feature a recent single from the album which is so beautiful in the melody, engrossing in the vocal delivery and feels satisfying in the overall production. The song is written by Sudan, with production by Nathan Thampy and glorious vocals by Anika.

Anika strikes you hard with her first line " waiting patiently", but I cannot be waiting patiently for her even to finish the intro. I am having goosebumps with that mild vibrato and Jazzy conclusion she gives to the ending notes. The Keys accompany like a shadow without disturbing or taking away the attention from Anika's vocal prowess. "Oh My God, I am hopelessly falling for you", and I don't know if these are her words or mine when I listen to her. Sudan comes along and he brings an equal amount of gravitas and a feeling of reassurance against Anika's vulnerability in the tone.

Nathan Thampy makes a thumping contribution on keys, synths and rhythms with every sinew in our body just feeling charged. The melody is simple but the song feels wholesome and impacts you by the time it is over.

8. Jogiya

Performed by Fiddlecraft

Written by Fiddlecraft

Produced by Fiddlecraft

Language: Hindi

Genre: Folk Rock

Mood: Contemplative

I am hearing the Pune-based Pop Rock band for the first time, and I must say that I am quite impressed. Fiddlecraft has Gaurav Kadu as the frontman and band members Charuvikram Singh, Sudeep Shetty and Siddharth Kundal. We get an intro on Keys and guitars and it is almost immediately hypnotic. The vocal aalap and humming start off and that segment shows sometimes how words and lyrics can take away the beauty of musical notes even when it comes to singing.

The chorus segment has accompaniment on vocal harmonies and the drums, guitars and keys just elevate the song. The arrangements of production are spectacular with the riffs on keys acting as the song's backbone. The humming is so catchy and it stays in the heart for a very long time after the song is over. The singing is passionate and filled with bustling emotions.

9. Better Man

Written and Composed by KL Pamei

Produced by Kevi Pucho

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Contemplative

I have been a fan of KL Pamei for a while now even before he made it to the top 24 of Nexa Music Season 2 last year. The last time I featured him was for a single called "Alive" and this one here is even better as Pamei writes, composes and performs "Better Man". The guitars and bass are enriching and within seconds we get a whiff of what is about to come. There is no way that one can find Pamei's voice resistible. It has such an attractive tone and texture and I feel like I am listening to Chad Kroeger of 'Nickelback'.

We are lured into the song thanks to some excellent writing, and able music production. The credits for the latter go to Kevi Pucho. Akok is on the keys and he is supported by Augustine Eliem's guitars and Wangshi Meren's bass. During the verse, I hear the faint sound of the slide guitar and it gives a flavour of country music of the West. Alino is singing all along and supporting on backing vocals. The interlude on the lead guitar is short but not short of mesmerism. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Kevi with recording at Element Indie Studio. When I listen to this, I am inspired to be a better man, and that is the power of good songwriting

10. Jaadugari

Singer - Maahi

Music- Siddhant Bhosle

Lyrics - Shayra Apoorva

Music Producer - Soham Mukherji

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

This collaborative project is some juicy pop that scores on multiple aspects. First of all, Sidhant Bhosle in his usual style weaves an appealing melody, and to get the message across the bright and talented Shayra Apoorva pens the lyrics. Maahi is someone I haven't featured before, but he sure does possess a good set of vocals that suits the pop genre. The production responsibilities are handled by Soham Mukherji.

The acoustic guitarby Sidhant, plays second fiddle to the keys and rhythms in the pre-chorus, but the moment the chorus segment begins the guitars take the lead. This is where I also started feeling the vocal performance of Maahi, especially when he delivers the title phrase in the higher vocal register. I like how the melody has this well-written humming portion as an interlude. Ganesh Surve is the vocal engineer and Soham does the mixing and mastering.

11. Bheed

Performed by Ashish Zachariah, Sidharth Sudheer

Written by Aditi Raj, Ashish Zachariah

Produced by Ashish Zachariah

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Contemplative

The vocals are mild, and the guitar strumming is louder and resonates, this works well for me at the start because Sidharth Sudheer sings "Bheed mein dhoondoon jawaab", and like the words, his voice seems feeble and lost. Aditi Raj writes these hard-hitting lines with Ashish Zachariah's composition. Then comes the beautiful interlude with harmonies, guitars, Keys and rhythms.

I have featured vocalist Sidharth for a couple of Malayalam projects with Kappa Original and even for Govind Vasantha, and here he continues to impress me with his emotionally perfect delivery. The production by Ashish is solid as always and he ups the ante in the second verse with a faster tempo. After the chorus segment, we head to the outro which remains upbeat, did I hear a semblance of the Sarangi?

12. Dil Ki Sun

Performed by Raghav Meattle, SidB

Written by Raghav Meattle, SidB

Produced by Bharath

Language: Hindi

Genre: Disco Pop

Mood: Energetic

This is one rejuvenating disco-pop song written and performed by SidB and Raghav Meattle. The vocals are pretty straightforward and that is probably done to let the listener focus more on the tone, production and sound design of the song. Bharath is the man behind the musical production. The heavy rhythms and keys are the perfect accompaniment, but the moment we get to the chorus, the bass guitars steal the thunder away from everything else.

Interestingly we get a nice intervention on the microphone with an announcement that leads to Raghav's intro. The outro with the sound of horns gives a nice flavour to this upbeat song. The best way to react is to stop reading this article, let down your hair, wear your dancing shoes and hit the floor. The mix and master is by Crustacean, and the concept of the song is by Shambhavi Singh.
