1. Ghost
Produced and Mixed by sudan
Mastered by Vavae
Written by sudan & Frizzell D'souza
Language: English
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
It would be fair, to say that Frizzell D'Souza is one of my absolute favourite Indie musicians in India today. She earned that thanks to her poignant vocals, and relevant and fresh songwriting to go along with. Last year her EP "In My Asymmetry" was one of the top 3 Indie EPs for me. Frizzell co-writes this gentle and beautiful pop single along with another talented bloke sudan, who too has been reviewed and featured by me before. This collaboration works like magic with sudan producing the song.
He opens in the verse and I love that tone which makes the listener feel distant and cold for just a bit. The flowy acoustic guitars act like a stream of water that brings freshness and also helps us move to the next verse where Frizzell serenades you with her voice. The production gets a bit more energetic on rhythms. The tone and texture of her voice are a lesson for many young musicians learning the craft and wanting to make it big. She asks "Can you come some other time, if that's alright" If she was asking me this, why would I ever say No to a voice like this?
Kudos to sudan and Frizzell on the very hummable melody, and sudan especially for getting the sound of the trumpets in multiple layers and horns in the background. Feel the pulse reverberating when Frizzell leverages her vocal abilities to deliver a stunning bridge section. Voila, there come the trumpets in the outro!

2. Sab Jag Andha
Music Composed and Produced By - Aman Pant
Arranged By - Sairaj Vijay Puranik
Singer - Romy
Lyrics - Kabir, Ashwni Dhir
Language: Hindi
Genre: Folkish/ Semi-classical
Mood: Pathos
I came across this album on Apple Music called "Hisaab Barabar". It made no noise and there were reviews of the movie but nobody talked about the music. As always I listen to everything that gets released, and when I heard this album, I was more than pleased by the quality. No wonder, it was the composition of Aman Pant, a musician I have liked and paid attention to. Jayant Patnaik plays the heavy rhythms, giving the flavour of a folkish number, and the additional dholak is played by Omkar Ingawale & Mangesh Joshi.
I am reminded of the fantastic works of Ajay-Atul and this is meant to be a compliment. Did I hear some Raag Pilu? Well, thankfully Aman Pant educates me that there is more of a Raag Charukeshi vibe. I feel the pathos not just in the melody and tempo but the magnificent vocals of Romy. Rajeev Prasanna's flute solo in the interlude is endearing and filled with morose emotions. The melody is composed by Aman, and all the arrangements are by Sairaj Vijay Puranik. Kanir and Ashwni Dhir are the lyricists.
The vocal harmonies in some Qawwali style along with stunning bass guitars elevate the interlude. Veljon Noronha plays the guitars, strokes, and bass and does all the related arrangements. I was taken aback by the beginning of the stanza which starts, after a brief pause and in such a low vocal register. Romy sings "lobh mein labh" in a captivating style and with enviable control. Well done to the writers and the composer for creating something so touching. "Iss gol chakki mein phis gaya banda" sings Romy and I am feeling the heaviness in my heart.
The recording engineers are Mukund Kondedeshmukh, Vishal Shinde & Bashab Bhattacharjee. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Bashab at Chirping Birds Studios. The closing outro with the strings in the background, the flute solo and Romy's singing are magical.

3. Naseeba
Composed by : Anirudh Varma, Kavya Singh, Saptak Chatterjee
Vocal Arranger, Producer: Anirudh Varma
Singer: Kavya Singh, Saptak Chatterjee
Lyrics: Amar Syali
Language: Hindi
Genre: Semi-classical Fusion
Mood: Calm
I begin this review with a heavy heart, as I recently discovered that Kavya Singh passed away after suffering from Cancer. This song is one of her last recorded songs. I have featured Kavya in her solo singles, where she composed and performed lead vocals. It is disheartening, but I do hope she has found a great place to rest. This track is composed by Anirudh Varma, Saptak Chatterjee and Kavya and produced by the ever-dependable Anirudh with lead vocals by Saptak and Kavya.
The drums by Suyash Garbriel are accompanied by the gentle Kanjira played by Varun Rajasekharan and Saptak Sharma's Tabla. This is one delightful concoction of Western and Indian percussion instruments. Saptak Chatterjee flawlessly engages us with his vocals. The lead guitars by Shrikant Biswakarma give it so much style and that Alt-Rock texture only to be deviated by the striking Sarod played by Rohan Prasanna. When Kavya starts singing there is a sense of calm and tranquillity brought about by her delivery and those eloquent ghamakas.
The Keys and Sarod engage in a tete-a-tete in the interlude and it is a testament to Anirudh's abilities and vision as a contemporary producer with deep knowledge of Indian classical music. The lyrics are written with tenderness by Amar Syali and all the groovy paints are by Madhur Chaudhary on bass guitar. The tracks are mixed by Anirudh and the recording engineer is Jonty Indra.

4. Tempest
Vocals - Arunaja
Composed by Janne Tolsa & Arunaja
Lyrics by Arunaja, Janne Tolsa, assisted by AI
Language: English
Genre: Alt-Rock
Mood: Energetic
I have never waited so eagerly and desperartely for an indie musician like have for Arunaja. She released "For Who I Am" back in 2022. She has a powerful voice and Arunaja can leverage it like a superwoman. Here comes a new single composed by Arunaja and Janne Tolsa, with lead vocals by the former. I love how there is ethical disclosure, saying that the lyrics were by Arunaja, Janne and with some AI assistance. It sets a good precedent in the Indie music space in India.
Arunaja roars on with her voice and when she sings "Sailing through the storm" it feels like she is the storm. Jussi Tegelman plays the emphatic drums, and Janne ups the ante on Keys, and guitars with some slickness added by bassist Marko Hietala. The song catches on the chorus lines hit you hard with some engaging notes and powerful singing as Arunaja sings "We will brave raging tempest". Janne Tolsa provides backing vocal support. Arunaja employs all her might with some brave and raging vibrato from time to time.
That high-pitched performance like a Soprano makes me go berserk in the interlude and the bridge section is another exhibition of all her prowess. This is exemplary for musicians who want to write their songs and perform, to give more than 100 per cent and showcase all you got. Janne gives the song the perfect accompaniment with the rock flavours and energy passes from Arunajan to the drummer, bassist, keyboardist and guitarist. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Janne and Seija Arola -Tolsa and Tuomas Rytkönen handles the cover art.

5. Mann Mann Rangeyo
Singers - Shaan & Dridha
Music Composed and Produced By Aman Pant
Lyrics - Akhil Tiwari, Barbie Rajput (aka Dridha)
Language: Hindi
Genre: Folkish Pop
Mood: Romantic
Here is the other song from the album "Hisab Barabar". The Names are big and their work speaks for themselves. Veljon Noronha plays the acoustic guitar at the start sowing seeds of romanticism. Veljon also plays the strokes and bass guitars in the song along with handling all the related arrangements. It has been a while since I have loved Shaan's vocals as much as I have in this number. The opening verse marches ahead with the rhythm guitar and a flute intervention by ID Rao.
I love how after a mild pause, the tempo changes and Barbie Rajput(Dridha) brings a folkish flavour with her singing. She has this fantastic tone and she also co-writes the lyrics with Akhil Tiwari. This melody bit is from an old Sindhi folk song that we have all heard. The melody is the same , and it has also been part of Coke Studio Pakistan's famous track "Sammi Meri Waar". The playful bass guitars and strokes are so enticing along with the gentle rhythms played by Aman Pant. Kudos to him, for Aman composes, and produces this gentle giant of a song. The interlude is a joyride with the lead clarinet by ID Rao, accompanied by a layer of flute and guitars as well.
The strings section arranged in the background in the stanza along with Shobin Shaji Joy's backing vocals works very well in tandem. The song fills your heart with joy as it ticks every box needed to make a breathtaking creation. Enjoy the solo violin by the amazing Ajay Jayanthi who starts playing and fiddling with your senses just before the outro. Neil Andrew & Shobin also handle the additional music production of teh song. The recording engineer is Vishal Shinde at Chirping Birds Studio, with mixing/mastering done by Bashab Bhattacharjee

6. Poovu
Composition, Lyrics, Vocals: Haniya Nafisa
Music Production, Arrangement: 6091
Language: Malayalam
Genre: Pop Lullaby
Mood: Soothing
Haniya Nafisa is a wonderful talent, I featured her work last time and that track was called 'Mulchedi'. meaning a 'thorny plant or bush'. This new single. Hniya composes, sings and writes and calls it ' Poovu' meaning 'Flower'. Is this intentional to name it this way? She starts with her humming and I am already floating in the skies amongst the pacifying clouds.
The melody is not just straightforward, and that is where Haniya scores high marks. Look at the way the notes drift in "Kaatil Vegam kondu paiyye paiyye njan vaadi". Things get even more divergent in the subsequent lines "Maara Venal Kondu vingum poovayi njan maari". This whole verse is not easy to write or perform thanks to the complex notations. Well done Haniya for the superlative effort in writing a melody, which is taken for granted by many top composers too. The keys, synths and rhythms get a lush set of arrangements thanks to the music production and sound design of 6091.
The stanza is once more segment where Haniya writes something touching, deep with higher pitch notes, and there is enough room for, the Pianos, strings and some woodwinds to embellish the background. Rajan KS is the mixing and mastering engineer with Arjun S working as the 3D Artist. Aslam Seju does all the lyrical video, album art etc.

7. Shadows and Smoke
Vocals, Lyrics, Composition, production: Rizwan Shakir
Language: English
Genre: Rock
Mood: Energetic
This Assamese rock musician gives us the most energizing piece of music this week. I couldn't find too many details on the song's audio credits, but this is one for keeps. The intro has this sizzling guitar riffs along with accompanying bass and we are immediately drawn into the song. Rizwan writes and performs and his vocals give the feeling of a trembling man facing all the dark shadows and billowing smoke.
As he ends the verse and sings "We search for the light" we get some terrific riffs on the guitars and the pumping drums. We also get to hear a nice bridge section and kudos to Rizwan for this breathtaking production. You better not miss the solo on the guitar closer to the end of the track.

8. Finding Her
Singer: Kushagra
Lyrics: Kushagra & Saaheal
Music: Bharath
Language: Hindi
Genre: R&B
Mood: Groovy
I always end up liking some creation or production of this man Bharath. It is not destiny, it is purely his devotion and definitive talent in the indie space that makes me like the work consistently. Kushagra is the lead vocalist and the featured artist as he co-writes the lyrics with Saaheal. The highlight for me is the song's tone, sound design and how I am hooked straightaway with the guitar riff in the intro.
The slow tempo with all the R&B-styled arrangements and sound works brilliantly. I am reminded of "End of the Road" by 'Boyz II Men'. The funky heavy guitars along with the nice rhythms are good additions but Kushagra's heartfelt delivery deserves appreciation. The interlude has this stylish solo on the guitar giving some oomph as well.
The background is filled with some nice work on the Keys and guitar interventions as he sings " Tu aata nahi, sapnon se jaata nahi". Well done Bharath on the composition and production as always. Saahil Samyal Rajput pens the touching words. The covert art is by Divya Singh.

9. Tu Jaise Dariya
Singer, Composer: Parth Srivastava
Lyricist: Parth Srivastava, Armaan Sharma
Music Arranger: Dhairya Mehrotra
Language: Hindi
Genre: Light Music - Pop
Mood: Romantic
I quite enjoyed Parth Srivastava's EP last year and now we have a new single which was an easy pick for the week. The melody is nicely written and makes one want to hum and learn the tune. Parth has composed it, performed the lead vocals and also co-written the lyrics along with Armaan Sharma. Aditya Kulkarni plays the rhythm guitars right through and I hear some traces of Raag Bilawal in the melody.
I love the pre-chorus where the guitars get heavier and we hear the line "Mera aaj bhi tu, tu kal mera", allowing Parth to explore the higher vocal registers. The chorus segment that follows has this nice additional rhythm arrangement as well as giving it an Indian flavour. Dhairya Mehrotra has done the music arrangements with additional arrangements by Garvit Soni. The introduction of Raju Dhumal's shehnai in the interlude does two things viz. 1. gives a very semi-classical flavour and 2. brings in that mild pathos as well as a festive fervour.
The chorus segment that follows the end of the verse gets a nicely added layer of Shehnai already playing in the background. Raju makes it a very heartwarming solo in the outro. The tracks are mastered by Shivam Verma.

10. Kehndi Hai
Singers: Zanai Bhosle, Siddhant Bhosle
Composers: Siddhant Bhosle, Zanai Bhosle
Lyricist: Zanai Bhosle, Shayra Apoorva, Siddhant Bhosle
Music Producers: Gibson George, Siddhant Bhosle
Language: Hindi
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
I have always been fond of Siddhant Bhosle's work in the indie space. He creates very hummable tunes and, in addition, a very breezy set of arrangements and production. After featuring him numerous times, I realised this. This time, we have some fantastic pedigree amongst us. Zanai Bhosle, the granddaughter of the legendary Asha Bhosle has co-composed the melody, performed the female lead vocals and co-written the lyrics along with Siddhant and Shayra Apoorva.
When I heard this track, I immediately found it very pleasing and loop-worthy. Siddhant gets on the guitar riffs, and what you hear from Zanai is nothing you would expect based on that lineage. She has this saucy and hypnotic tone and it works quite well in this pop. The vocal prowess of Siddhant is well-established and moves between his high-pitched notes and falsetto modes with relative ease and exquisite style. I love the modifications made when they sing "Kehndi Hai" with longer stress on the first word.
The tracks are mixed and mastered by Prathamesh Dudhane at YRF Studios, the recording engineers are Vijay Dayal & Harjot Kaur.
