1. Moko Kahan

Composers: Vidhya Gopal, Digvijay Singh Pariyar

Vocals: Vidhya Gopal, Digvijay Singh Pariyar

Lyrics: Kabir

Language: Hindi

Genre: Contemporary-Tumri

Mood: Pacifying

This is an example of some excellent musicians coming together and sticking to the nuanced beauty of classical music. Vidhya Gopal and Digvijay Singh Pariyar are not only excellent vocalists but also talented and committed songwriters/composers. Here a Kabir original song is taken and given an ornamentation in the form of a melody written by Vidhya and Digvijay. Isn't this the great union of two varied styles as Digvijay's Harmonium plays alongside Shivam Pant's acoustic guitar and Aditya Ahir's bass?

Vidhya and Digvijay sing with such elan and poise, and the song's sthayi is enough to strip you of all pride, such is the power of music. The mild sound of the Dimdi by Akshay Jadhav adds that Ganjira-styled effect and I wondered if there is a Kalyan Thaat influence in the melody. Digvijay tells me that this is Raag Bhoopali-inspired composition. The Sargam and alaaps by Digvijay and the harmonium that follows are all gentle like a touch of a petal and Vidhya takes the turn to take us along this walk in the clouds. Kabir's poetic genius did deserve a tune like this I am thankful to such honest musicians who stay in the with all heart for the art.

Shivam Pant's solo on the electric guitar is one stunning addition in the interlude and it is a stroke of genius by the production and arrangement team. It allows a music lover to celebrate the greatness of music from around the world, where no style i superior to another. The way Vidhya sings "ek pal ki hi talaash mein" with that exaggerated harkatein on "talaash" is magical, like saying that the quest (talaash) is ongoing. Akshay Dabhadkar is the keyboardist accompanying right through, just being gentle. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Varun Patil, and the recording engineer is Shashank Sekhar Sahu.

2. Bejaara Aanen

Movie: Love Marriage

Music Composed, Arranged and Produced by Sean Roldan

Lyrics: Mohan Rajan

Singer: Sivaangi Krishnakumar

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

The unstoppable melody train of Sean Roldan goes on without even a semblance of a hindrance. Here is the new single called 'Bejaara Aanen' from the movie 'Love Marriage'. As the title suggests, the song messes up hormones thanks to the melody, singing and stunning arrangements. The kids' chorus is one element that never goes wrong and V.Shivathmika, Sadhana Rangaraj, and K.Vidhyarupini sing the intro humming with such cuteness and charm.

The keys and rhythm programming is such a belter that would straight away invoke our dance skills when we hear it. Ramkumar Kanakarajan is on rhythm production and Sabarai Bharathi Krishna aids in additional rhythm production. Sivaangi Krishnakumar is in prime form singing the lines with such granular ghamakas. Listen to the ravishing strings in the background performed by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra and arranged by one of our finest musicians Kalyani Nair. My favourite line is "Idhu enna puthu feelu, tharaiyil illa en kaalu, enakku ini illa veraalu" and that way the last phrase ends abruptly with a minute pause reminding me of Maestro Ilaiyaraja.

The interlude once again has this chirpy kids' humming. The tone, and the rhythm production all remind me of AR Rahmans stunning song "Marudaani" from the album 'Sakkarakatti'. Ashwin Suresh plays the acoustic and nylon guitars. Mohan Rajan writes these very witty lines like "En lightu nee thane, Un shadow naan thane", Sivaangi goes on to charm her way through the stanza and the chord progression along with the constant strings in the background is a reminder of why Sean Roldan is easily one of our best composers. This melody especially in teh charanam reminds me of Maestro's brilliant number 'Nil Nil Nil Bathil Sol Sol Sol' from the album 'Paatu Padava'.

I am teary-eyed with the string arrangements as we hear the anupallavi once again "kekkadha tune ellam en manadu paduthu". Thank you Sean and team for this song that brings a long-lasting smile. The recording engineers are Aswin George John at Sounds Right, Sabari Bharathi Krishna at Roldan Records and Lijesh Kumar at Vision Studios. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Aswin George John at Sounds Right.

3. Aaye Kyon

Music Composer: Prakruti Mishra

Singers: Prakruti Mishra, Satyajeet Jena

Music Producer: Satyajeet Jena

Lyricist: Ravi Raa

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: pathos

Wow, an intro that catches your attention and then further enhances the addition towards the song. All this is thanks to the acoustic guitar and the cello that follows. We get mixed feelings, hope from the pleasant guitar strumming and more melancholy from the ravishing cello. Prakruti Mishra is the composer of this melody and she begins the lead vocals in the verse, and like we got a sniff of the pathos from the intro, the lyrics too conveys a similar message as she sings " Aaye Kyon, der se itne tum, aane ki bhi kushi na rahe, aaye toh".

Ravi Raa pens these beautifully haunting lyrics and the music production is by Satyajeey Jena, an artist I have featured and admired in my prior article. Dichen Nayak is the acoustic guitar payer and Sunil Soren is the bassist and they both combine effectively in the verse. The cello (programmed) is one unmistakable element that is neverending like the pain of love. Satyajeet's humming in the interlude is nicely arranged and executed as well, and when it is all over he comes on board as the male lead vocalist. He expresses the guilt perfectly with his tone singing "kar do maaf bhi, kar lo baat bhi, galti maan ke main laut aaya".

The introduction of the heavy drums is a good addition when Prakruti sings her line in response, kind of indicating that she is determined and not going to change her mind with words like "ab toh saare yeh tumhare batein hain fizool". This is all very intelligent production according to me, as every musical choice ends up being a counterpoint that adds to the story. The outro with the acoustic guitar and cello playing in tandem is beautiful with the cello representing the female perspective saying "aaye ho, dile se paar hum, koi umeed hi na rahe, aye tum", but the male lead is hopeful like the acoustic guitar with lines "aya hoon, kam se kam baatein sun, Main teri har kushi , saath mein laaya hoon".

Kudos to the whole team for telling a beautiful story through music and lyrics. The recording engineers are Jazbaat, Sohamm and Kundan at Somesh STudios. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Shadab Rayeen at New Edge.

4. Rakhna Jo Chaha

Vocals: Riya Goley

Lyricist, Composer: Riya Goley

Music Producer: ZRYA

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Groovy

It is always a delight to feature new artists, and this song got me to discover singer/songwriter Riya Goley, a music producer in ZRYA. The rhythm guitar is played by ZRYA (Mayank) and Riya after the initial foray delivers the chorus line phrases "Rakhna Jo Chaha" and "Karta Raha Aetbaar" with style, a tremble that sounds poignant and technically strong as a vocalist. The introduction of the programmed strings in the background and some upbeat rhythms are all testaments to the good work of ZRYA.

That humming at the end of this chorus segment, delivered in the high pitch is outstanding to hear, especially with all the keys and synth-heavy support by ZRYA, reminding us of some of the great pop music of the 1990s. The interlude gets even more stylish with the faint violins in the background. The verse here is short but elements like the harmonies during the verse and the suave solo violin deliver more than a powerful punch. The song is exemplary in how musicians should combine and provide a wholesome track that smears us with a hummable melody and allures us with substantial juice on arrangements and production.

Riya sings "I just wanted to be someone for you" and follows it up with an endearing aalap-styled humming. I hope this artist never tries to be someone else but herself. The tracks are mixed and mastered by ZRYA

5. O Raasa

Lyrics: G.Ra

Vocalists: Shakthisree Gopalan & Aditya Rao

Music Producer by Aditya Rao Music

Co-Arranger: Will Shine

Language: Tamil

Genre: Rock-Ballad

Mood: Pathos

The last time I heard Aditya Rao in a Kollywood album was back in 'Rocketry' along with Sam CS. This is his debut album and this song tells me a tale of hope that Aditya The Rao is here to stay and make a mark for himself. The combination of the harmonies, acoustic guitars and drums is soothing and gently tantalising too. Will Shine plays the guitars and drums here and he works along with Aditya in handling all the arrangements. I love the tonality when Aditya starts singing almost like a folk-rock single.

G.Ra is the lyricist and when his words are sung with Aditya's sullen texture we get to feel the melancholy. "Nee enna vitta pona unna thedadho nenjam" is an example. The song becomes hauntingly good when we have lead vocal lines singing " O Raasa idhu kadhal dhaana" with the humming in the background. The horns interjecting along with the funky basslines with punctuated lines "O Raasa" is a very throbbing segment of the song. Shakthisree Gopalan joins in the stanza with her steamy vocals and the appeal just lifts multiple levels when she performs the line in the Altos scale or Countertenor voice.

After the song's charanam we get some electrifying guitars played by Will Sine who is also the bassist here. The song is a prime example of some able sound design and music production can be crucial to elevate a melody. The outro is dominated by excellently arranged harmonies and horns section as well. Mike Machinist is the live instruments engineer and Vishnu Namboothiri is the recording as well as mixing engineer. The tracks are mastered by KS Manirathnam.

6. Will You Be Mine

Composed and Arranged: Shravan Sridhar

Vocals: Aditya RK

Vocals: Pragathi Guru

Music Production: Shravan Sridhar and Priyanshu

Lyrics: Pa Hariharan

We have all heard of a new concept where musicians compose and write a new song on the wedding occasion of their close family or friend or maybe their big day itself. Owing to certain pressures and maybe a shortage of time, these songs never quite turn out to be impressive, however, this one is a rank exception as Aditya RK, Pragathi Guru and Shravan Sridhar cook up a wedding feast. The rhythm production is straightforward to start things off and feels like "Chellamma" from 'Doctor". Aditya RK and Pragathi Guru(who I recently featured) are in terrific form as the lead vocalists.

The bridegroom in the music video is Aditya's sister, as he pours his heart in and sings this like a spectacular dream. I love PA Hariharan's lines " nee Parkum pothellam, Pesum pothellam, en nenjam rekkai kattuthe". Is there some Yamunakalyani Ragam in this, and this is what I felt when he sings " en kaalgal mele together"? The chorus segment is exceptionally catchy "Will You be Mine, En Kadhale" as Aditya adds the Pop fervour of the boybands we have heard and grew up listening to. The NAdaswaram-sounding interlude works beautifully as this is a wedding scene after all.

Shravan Shrodhar writes the melody and handles teh arrangements and he deserves appreciation for this exhilarating track. Pragathi Guru is up to the task and gives Aditya a run for the money with her countertenor-styled husk. The production goes mild and soft as he sings "En Vaanilai adhu marudho" to be in sync with the words that mean " Is my situation changing?" The music production is mine Shravan Sridhar and Priyanshu. Pragathi makes a lasting impression with her glorious climactic aalap. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Priyanshu

7. Adi Ivale

Music Composed & Sung by: Rajaganapathy

Music Producer, Mix & Master: Smith Asher

Lyrics: Vignesh Ramakrishna

Language: Tamil

Genre: Electronic Pop

Mood: Romantic

Rajaganapathy was a very talented singer and performer at one of the premier reality singing shows in TN. He would not only pick difficult songs but also perform the notations with the Sargams (swaras) for every song as well as a young contestant. That is why I was always rooting for this vocalist to make it big. Here is Rajaganapathy with his new indie song as a composer and vocalist. He stuns you with some fine notes straightaway on "Thakkura Taara", and i am reminded of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's 'Malayala Karaiyoram' from 'Rajadhi Raja'. Maybe that is why there could be some strains of Shankarabharanam Ragam.

The chorus line "Adi Ivale" after that high-pitched humming is incredibly catchy and stays on your mind for a long. Smith Asher amps up the energy with his rhythm programming. He is the music producer and also handles all the mixing and mastering duties for the song. Notice the mild modifications to the notes in the way he delivers the phrases "azhagala alayuren naane" and "asayaama alayuren naan". Vignesh Ramakrishna writes these excellent words. The woodwinds are just inducing so much chirpiness and likability and there are many layers to it too, well done Smith.

The stanza is short but it is made up by Rajaganapathy's evocative singing that fills anybody with love and happiness. Lijesh Kumar is the vocal engineer, and Nikhil Mathew is the vocal supervisor. Kudos to Rajaganapathy for this nice melody and I love the way he concludes it all in the outro with "Neeyum Naanum, Poovum Thenum, Naanum Neeyum".

8. You left something

Composer & Produced by: aswekeepsearching

Lyrics: Uddipan Sarmah

Language: Hindi

Genre: Rock

Mood: Energetic

This rock band is always on every music lover's lips for their scintillating brand of music. 'aswekeepsearching' sometimes makes you feel like the search can end here if it is solid rock music that satisfies you. There is no time to waste as the adrenaline starts pumping. Sambit Chatterjee is the drummer and Uddipan is the lead guitarist setting the stage on fire. From diabolical, we move into a zone of tranquillity with Ajay Jayanthi's solo violin.

The melody written for this segment is haunting and Ajay nails it with an undeniable melancholic tone. Close to 2 minutes of instrumental obliteration and we hear Uddipan's soothing voice. The background sound design is very different and becomes more of a rock ballad at this point with the Keys, milder drums, bass and guitars. Robert Alex is the bassist and the lyrics are penned by Uddipan. After the pacifying verse ends, we get the blistering combination of lead guitars and drums once again elevating the experience. At this point, Ajay once again makes his presence felt with the solo violin.

Mesmerism is one word to describe the cumulative effect on all the live instrumentals as we come towards the end of this song. Sambit has also co-produced this song.
