Here are the best songs released in India across languages and genres for the week ending    6th April 2025

1. Naguvina Nesara

Composed, Arranged and Produced by Charan Raj

Vocals: Sunidhi Ganesh

Lyrics: Pramod Maravanthe

Co-composer: Narayan Sharma

Language: Kannada

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Romantic

I have been waiting for this, but like they say "when it rains, it pours". Forget what I am about to write in the next few paragraphs, and do yourself a favour. Just go listen to this spellbinding melody from Charan Raj and let it make your day brighter. Sunidhi Ganesh hums, and haunts you, pulling you closer and closer, and you end up like a prey entering her den. I am hearing Sunidhi for the very first time, and listening to her delivery and vocal abilities it feels like a seasoned artist is performing.

The mild Piano alone feels like a leaf out of Maestro Ilaiyaraja's playbook. The strings section slowly starts playing thanks to the execution by Cochin Strings and arrangements by Narayan Sharma. This fabulous solo violinist is also the co-composer for this melody. When the line "Odutha Odutha" just is about end, we have the flourishing acoustic guitar notes decorating the background sound for the line "Benda Bhoom Tampagidhe". The line means the parched earth is getting drenched with water, and just then Sunil's acoustic guitars quench our thirst too.

The introduction of the clap sounds with the chorus segment is beautiful, kudos to Charan and Narayan for their arrangements, programming and production. The amazing words are penned by Pramod Maravanthe. The humming in the interlude adds to the mild melancholy and we have an array of ethnic strings and plucks played by Dr. P Subhani. The stanza creates awe with the notes and Sunidhi makes the heart flutter in love with her singing and sweetness. I have a wide smile and my eyes remain shut to avoid all earthly disturbances when I hear the line "Mouna Nidhana, Kado Vedhana, Hogi Bandante Aagaaga praana". The Harps and bass guitars by Naveen Napier give a mix of merriment and mystique.

Venkatesh Bhat is the music supervisor, and the recording engineers are Aniket Mohanty and Vishnuraj MR at 2 Bar Q Studios and Audiokraft Studios. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Sujith Sreedhar.

2. Guru Meets Mastan (Ulpporul)

Music and Concept: Shahabaz Aman

Music Production: Rex Vijayan

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Folk Fusion

Mood: Inspiring/M

This man is one of my favourite musicians in India. The conceptualization and ideation of Shahbaz Aman are beyond compare. It is as good as his divine voice. Here in this album, Shahabaz brings together the poetic works of Sri Narayana Guru and Icha Abdulkhadar Mastan, hence "Guru Meets Mastan". The single is an experience any music lover must never miss out on and 'Ulpporul' is translated as 'Inner Meaning'.

We have the splendid Rex Vijayan on music production and all the acoustic guitars, Mandolin and additional programming are done by Sujith Valiyaveettili. The Kozhikodel Chorus is mesmerising with their harmonies in the background and it elevates the song, promoting feelings of brotherhood, harmony and love. The vocalists are Ranjith Jayaraman, Nasil P, Adwaith B Kumar, Arun Ashok, Akhil Dev and Devadut Bijibal. The Mandolin provides a very Middle Eastern influence, in the interlude.

I hear some scintillating sounds of the slide guitar, electric guitar and a few more ethnic strings with heavy rhythms all making it the best-produced song of the week, and one of the best from Malayalam in 2025 so far. Is there some influence of Raag Bhimpalasi (Abheri in Carnatic)? I feel that in this beautiful like "Ha Ha Ha endra Kamalam" and what follows. Shahabaz as well as the chorus singers bring such beauty to the lines with their ghamakas. The song is definitely a melody that moves across scales and as we progress there are shades of Raag Pilu (Kapi in Carnatic) and you can sense this in the line "Zaman aakhir thannil varum".

Rex shines through all along with his rhythm and keyboard programming along with Sujith, and he doesn't stop there, with some terrific arrangements on harmonies, horns and acoustic, and bass guitars as well. The mind goes into oblivion and peace with the emergence of "Patham kondadu thaniye".

3. Naina Bole

Music Composition: Shreyas Puranik

Lyrics: Prashant Ingole and Shreyas

Vocals: Pratibha Singh Baghel

Music Production: Saajid Salaam

Language: Hindi

Genre: Tumri-Fusion

Mood: Calming

Momin Kan makes you surrender your senses to the song with the solo Sarangi in the intro, and Pratibha Singh reigns supreme thereafter. This is a beautiful Tumri fusion song from a new movie "Fauji 2" with music composed by Shreyas Puranik and lyrics co-written by Prashant Ingole and Shreyas. Just when you think things are going to remain very old-school, we get introduced to the acoustic guitars played by Shomu Seal and the playfulness begins.

The desperation is so clear when she sings "samajh na paoon, samjha na paoon" and the Sarangi, Flute and Tabla converge. The flute solo is by Kiran Vinkar and Prashant Sonagra handles the Tabla. The way Pratibha sings these lines with the vibrato and improvisations is a treat to our ears. There are traces of Raag Shanmukhapriya in the interlude like when the flute plays and other segments, that I hear and presume. The simultaneous layers of the Sarangi and guitars are beautifully arranged by Saajid Salaam who is the producer, kudos to him.

The stanza is filled with so many surprises as Shreyas convolutes the melody with some excellent notes e.g. the line "baaz aaye na kabhi na apni harkaton sey" feels like a whiff of Raag Madhuvanti (Dharmavathi in Carnatic) and this stays in my mind for quite a long time. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Tosief Sheikh and the recording engineer is Rahul Sharma at Studio 504.

4. Running Away

Written and performed by Rohit Kulkarni

Additional Vocals: Tanisha Bhatnagar

Music Production: Rohit Kulkarni

Language: English

Genre: Prog-Rock

Mood: Groovy

Here is one of the best songs I have heard in 2025, and that comes from my appreciation for something pure and original. Rohit Kulkarni writes and performs the male lead vocals and produces this stunning Prog single. I love how he sings the line " I'm running away from things that made me wanna cry". The melody written feels fresh and earnest and with Rohit's vocals (thankfully they don't sound like imitating any American lead vocalist). I also like the wit and thought that has gone into the lyrics.

"Sitting at home, in your self-made throne", is one of the lines that made me smile, it is[erformed by Tanish Bhatnagar in addition to Rohit's lead. The lead guitar solo creates pure bliss when we hear it in the interlude giving the song its rock flavour. Rohit is the guitarist and Tanisha is on bass guitars. The bridge section that follows with both Rohit and Tanisha singing in unison is one of the highlights of the song. It elevates the music and makes me feel like I am listening to the amazing British Rock band The Alan Parsons Project.

The lines "Hiding Under, Made a Blunder, Words didn't help your case" with the electric guitar playing in the background is a segment that quenched my thirst week for good music. The song is rich in every department and hence stands out as one of the best of the week. Anindo Bose does the mixing and mastering at Plug N Play Studios.

5. Ishq Mein Aabaad ·

Vocals, Composition: Karan Verma

Lyrics: Hemant Vijh

Music Production: Karan Verma and Ameen Singh

Language: Hindi

Genre: Sufi-Rock

Mood: Inspiring

In 2024, Karan Verma was impressive with 2 splendid singles that ended up being featured among the best Indian songs in my weekly articles. One of them was the second-best Hindi Indie song of 2024, "Main Kahan." This is another fantastic single with sufi-Qawwali traits fused with soft Rock. It begins with the sound of the Harmonium and Karan's vocals, and I am reminded of "Arziyan" by AR Rahman from the album 'Delhi 6'.

Karan has composed the melody and performed the lead vocals with such finesse. The lead guitars, acoustic guitars and bass by Ameen Singh add the flavours of rock like salt and spices to this dish and we love what is cooking. The heart rests and the beats per minute come down as Karan sings " Ishq mein aabaad hai". Hemant Vijh writes the touching lines. The song is not only a beautiful melody but also has the perfect mix of instrumental arrangements and this is thanks to Karan and Ameen who have produced the music.

His ability to reach these higher notes with ease, and precision and when Karan manages to add some ghamakas there, he shines brightly. Nav Sharma plays the flute solo in the interlude and Agaazz is on the Keys and the Harmonium, along with doing additional production. The melody like I always say is crucial to incite interest in a listener and the verse does that with lines like "ishq mein mulaaqatein bhi hongi, dil mein dabi meethi yaadein bhi hongi"

The interlude that follows is sensations with the solo guitar piece and the flute accompanying, adding so much style despite being so brief and the lines that follow kind of have shades of Raag Bihag. Then in the outro, a shift of octaves happens to create a lasting impact when the song comes to an end. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Stereo Shinobi.

6. Adhoori

Music & Lyrics: Kutcheri

Language: Hindi

Genre: Classical Rock Fusion

Mood: Energetic

This Bengaluru-based Indie rock fusion band releases a single called "Adhoori" but the music and satisfaction levels are full and complete. They rope in the amazing Varijashree Venugopal for flute duties and along with her two more amazing artists come on board viz. Prashanth Gnamuthu on Bass and Ritwik Bhattacharya on lead guitars. Let the stunning guitar riffs on the intro take you on this journey and as they say, 'well begun is adhoori done'. The band boasts of some solid guitarists like Sucheth Ramprasad and Soorya Praveen who are also music producers.

Just last week I featured a super single produced by Soorya with the lead artist being Mary Ann Alexander for a song called 'Draining Out'. Varijashree plays a solo flute melody that just captivates us with Aniketh Ashok providing the energy on drums. The vocal harmonies are beautifully arranged with Srikar's amazing vibrato-laden 'puraani aadatein, naya hai yeh safar' being sung. The arrangements are outstaying with guitars, Keys by Akshay Krishna, drums and harmonies all combining like a perfect recipe for greatness. Ruthvi Urs is the band's bassist on duty to crank up the groove.

Srikar excels at every turn of the note and my favourite part is the chorus segment "Dil yeh poochta hain mujhe, khwahishein kyun adhoori si adhoori" especially the notes that correspond to the word 'Adhoori' and the way he does an improvisation on the word "khwahishein" is mindblowing. Aniketh gives a bazooka on drums after the pause "kyunadhoori", before the next phrase "si adhoori" begins. Just as much as Srikar and the band create a very hummable melody, the overall sound design and production are splendour and have exemplary fusion.

The tracks are mixed by Akash Shivakumar at Cadence Studios and mastered by Vivek Thomas at VTP Studios, Kochi. The recording engineer is Akash Shivakumar at Cadence Studios.

7. Kuthe Tu

Lyrics: Dr. Rahul Deshpande

Composition and Keys: Anand Kurhekar

Singer: Savni Bhatt

Music Production: Chinmay Harshe

Language: Marathi

Genre: Soft Rock

Mood: Groovy

What a splendid song! We rarely get such independent music in the Marathi space, and for that Anand Kurhekar, Rahul Deshpande, Chinmay Harshe and Savni Bhatt deserve a standing ovation. Chinamy sizzles on acoustic rhythm guitars as well as the savvy lead guitars we hear in the intro. Aatur Soni provides the tempo along with some style on drums. Savni Bhatt is raunch with her delectable vocals and delivery and it feels like she can cast a spell on you.

The beauty of the melody written by Anand Kurhekar, the messaging in Rahul's words and Savn''s sensational tone all haunt me pleasingly and I am lost and that is why Savni is asking "Kuthes tu, Kuthe Tu". The lead guitar solo comes to magnify the style quotient. I could sense some Raag Jog in the melody but Savni corrects me and says that it is more of Raag Jogkauns. The bass guitars are played by Dominic Fernandes. There is a bit of folk and spiritual music styles intertwined with the soft rock base and this whole concoction works pretty well. Anand is also the keyboardist here.

The arrangements of the vocal harmonies, along with the live instrumentals make this one breathtaking number this week. Chinmay does all the mixing and mastering, and Anand Dabre is the recording engineer.

8. Pai Gaiyan Kaniya

Composer: Neha Karode

Singsers: Neha Karode , Goldie Sohel

Lyrics: Preet Mangat

Music Produced by Rupjit Das

Language: Punjabi

Genre: Light Music/Pop

Mood: Pathos

I have always loved and respected Neha Karode the artist and here she turns composer for a Punjabi movie album "Mainu Pyar Kardiye Parjaat Kudiye". I have listened to a couple of songs and this was quick to touch my heart and senses. Shomu Seal starts playing the guitars in the intro and you can feel Rag Jog in purity, and it is followed by Kiran Vinkar's flute interventions.

Goldie Sohel takes you on a tranquil journey with his soothing vocals. The interlude has ethnic strings, guitars, and Neha joins in the backing vocals. Rupjit Das elevates the song multifold with his mastery of music production. As we get a pause in the verse, after Goldie's line, the keys and synths are heavy and impactful. This segment with "Kacche rang naal" is where I felt the influence of Raag Charukeshi. The flute interventions are spooky and brilliant with the mild humming of Neha also coming along.

The melody is written to induce even more melancholy, and Goldie's trembling vocals deliver the message with even more intensity. Preet Mangat penned the lyrics, and Rupjit mixed and mastered the tracks.

9. Bubble Poomottukal

Music Composer: Vishnu Vijay

Singers: Kapil Kapilan, Vishnu Vijay

Lyrics: Suhail Koya

Language: Malayalam

Mood: Electronic Pop

Genre: Romantic

Vishnu Vijay is a champion composer/producer when it comes to performing from outside the box of traditional, run-of-the-mill thinking. I am eager to witness the movie "Alappuzha Gymkhana" thanks to the director-composer combination that gave us the smashing hit "Thallumala"(Khalid Rahman and Vishnu). If all of Vishnu's whacky synths, harmonies and programming is not enough to entral you, get a load of this. The lead vocalist is the supremo Kapil Kapiland when he sings those higher notes in style, he is beyond compare.

Keba Jeremiah is on all the guitars, and the lyrics are by Vishnu's usual accomplice Suhail Koya. Check out those backing vocal grunts by Vinshu Vijay. This feels like a ride among the clouds in the sky and heading toward some heavenly planets. Kudos to Vishnu's vision and all this terrific sound design is only a result of that. Listen to the guitar riffs in the interlude by Keba. The stanza is where things slow down and both Visnhu and Kapil serenade us with lines like "Aakashangal Kullilay, Thirayake Meghakumbilay".

I love a mini Shankar Mahadevan-styled breathless segment from "Neeyente Ullumotham" and ending with "Dhe Kumilakalay Namalum". There are some strains of Raag maand here and when there is a humming by Kapil. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Sujith Sreedhar at The Master House, 2BQ Studios. The recording engineer is Vishnu Raj MR at Rathish Studio

10. Jibon Nodi

Vocals: Timir Biswas

Additional Vocal: Pralay Sarkar

Lyrics, Composition, Programming and Arrangement: Pralay Sarkar

Language: Bangla

Genre: Folk-Fusion

Mood: Spiritual

I remember once witnessing Timir Biswas performing many years ago at the Rabindra Sagar Lake. He continues to impress with his absorbing voice as he performs this Baul Folk-styled single from the movie "Dhrubor Aschojor Jibon". Pralay Sarkar has penned the lyrics and written the melody as well. The song begins with the typical sound of the ektara and Timir then begins to mesmerise and create this immersive experience. He sings with such an emotional impact, crying and pouring his heart out, only for the listener to connect with the song even better.

Pralay does all the programming and arrangements as well and we get this mild influx of folk percussions like the Dubki and Maracus. Swarajit Ratul Guha plays the flute solo, and that was the time a hint of Raag Maand came through. All additional programming is Tamal Kanti Halder. The segment with bass guitars, powerful keys and synths and Timir's rising vocals is when the magic happens, just before the line "khobor pabi na". The arrangements and music production with mild vocal harmonies, rhythms, keys, and live instruments all create a very satisfying experience.

The outro with the aalap, and flute solo in the background is one more prime example. Dhrubo Bhattacharjee, Anirban Ghosh and Sanjiban Das are the recording engineers.
