1. Chal Re Mana Jau
Music Composed And Produced By Gulraj Singh
Lyrics By Manoj Yadav
Singers - Nihira Joshi Deshpande, Gulraj Singh
Language: Marathi
Genre: Light Music
Mood: Romantic
Is this going to be the best song of 2025? Wow, just 6 months done, and could this be true or am I exaggerating? Don't take my word for it, just listen to the song and you tell me, readers. I just finished reviewing this album called 'Ata Thambaycha Naay' by Gulraj Singh and Saurabh Bhalerao, and this one is the song of the album. A sensational melody that kind of reminds me of 'Aye Hairathe' in its tonality, tempo and sound design, but this one is a testament to Gulraj's talent. The melody probably ahs fragments of Raag Shuddh Kalyan.
The lead vocals are by Nihira Joshi Deshpande and towards the end, Gulraj joins in. Nihira is stunning in her delivery, the way she starts off with that high-pitched alaap is good enough to drag you into this melody. Her ability to perform the harkatein and mild vibrato is mesmerising. When she gets to the title line the second time, we have exhilarating accompaniments, like the backing vocals, Tabla and Keys. The magic comes in at the interlude with Live Erhu played by Abhijit Mazumdar.
I have been introduced to this Chinese bowed instrument with 2 strings before, but where Gulraj takes it to another level, is the captivating melody that he writes for Erhu solo (with layers of it in the background). Abhijit responds by playing with finesse. The melody is like drops of honey and Nihira heightens the pleasure with her vocals. We have a beautiful intervention on the harp and Gulraj joins in in the closing stage of the Antara. Get knocked over now by Nihira's "chal re mana jau" loaded with complex vibrato in the outro.
The recording engineers are Gulraj and Vincent Joseph at GS Studios, with mixing and mastering by Ashish Saksena At Purple Haze Studios. Manoj Yadav writes these touching lyrics in Marathi.

2. Birha
Vocals: Shaurya Saxena, Prateeksha Srivastava
Lyrics, Composition: Pin Drop Music
Produced by Pin Drop Music
Language: Hindi
Genre: Classical Pop fusion
Mood: Immersive/Energetic
Pin Drop Music, as they call themselves has some bubbling talents viz. Shaurya Saxena, Nishad, Darshan Desai, Sudipto Biswas and Mihir Thatte. I had a chance to listen to this track long before its release and it was downright impressive. The smashing Prateeksha is like the trump card that the band unleashes on us and who in their right minds can resist this lady's sensational singing? The melody has two very popular scales used to create the mukhda and the antara and the way the two segments are intertwined is magical and seamless.
The way she delivers the harkatein on 'Birha', shows exactly why she is the name to remember folks. As the melody unravelled I was tempted to think, is it Raag Kirwani? But I believe there is an influence of Raag Sindhu Bhairavi in this opening segment. The heavy electronic music accompaniments are engaging, and I like that they don't take anything away from the mesmerism that Prateeksha puts us through. You can feel her pain as she sings " khabar na aayi thori, saare saari raat ve". The thumping rhythms and synths engage and now our total attention is on the song.
A drop in tempo, a change in scale and the background music vanishes, here emerges Shaurya in the antara and delivers this romantic melody written in a scale belonging to the Khamaj Thaat. The Tabla is eh perfect comapnion here as he too decorates the melody with his improvisations in "barse yeh badraa hai, rimjhim saawan ki boondoon se". I sensed resemblances to Harikambhoji Ragam here. Gradually the rhythm production starts adding to the energy build up and when finally Prateeksha and Shaurya combine in "Tore bina mai kaise khelun hori tere bin" it feels like an union of long-lost lovers.
The tracks are mixed and mastered by the amazing Aman Mornoey. Shaurya's display of the ghamakas as he sings "saawal mod mohara" is so endearing that you never want this outro to end

3. Daydream
Composition, Lyrics, Vocals: Zeba Tommy, Shrey Jadav
Music Produced by Crehyl Pereira
Vocal Arrangements by Zeba Tommy
Language: English
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
Only a handful of vocalists in India hold that kind of power to stun you into silence when they start singing. Here is one diva who goes by the name of Zeba Tommy and unless you have just come back from the International Space Station for the last few years, there is no excuse for not knowing this outstanding singer-songwriter. It is never too late, go listen to her music and I guarantee that you will be an instant fan. Here is Zeba along with Shrey Jadav and the two write the lyrics, and melody and perform the lead vocals.
Can you feel the vulnerability of the woman who is struggling to restrain herself? And she is enamoured in love when she sings " I gotta find wa y to deny, This love that I feel for you" Zeba is perfect in every note that she delivers. As we get to the humming, we are joined by Shrey and the two vocalists display such a style of singing in different keys. Crehyl Pereira is playing the gentle keys and also in charge of the song's music production. Shrey comes on board in the second verse and he stands up tall with some blemishless vocals. His flirtatious moves into the falsetto and back are so worth it as he sings "Lord knows I have tried".
The drums engage and when we get to the pre-chorus segment Shrey and Zeba are in full artillery mode. Get ready to be blown away by the exuberance and class of these vocalists. What I love is the way the chord progression meanders from the pre-chorus, especially the phrase "A part of all of your daydreams". To me, the melody, vocals, writing and arrangements seem to suggest that the lovers are demanding and vehement when they start off with lines like "don't keep me waiting on a miracle" but soon it becomes a loving request filled with care as they sing " carry me and let me be a part of all your daydreams".
The combined effort of the Keys and the Church Organ is majestic even as Daniel Kenneth Rego plays the guitars and Vivian D'souza is the bassist. I love the way the Keys play 3 notes like taking turns when Shrey sings "But it comes back each turn". We have a brilliant bridge section here, written with such poise and performed even better by Shrey and Zeba. The backing vocals enhance the impact and all these vocal arrangements are by Zeba. Daniel sizzles in the electric guitar solo in the outro. The recording and mixing engineer is Chinmay Harshe, with Maria Triana on mastering. Elsa Jose does the cover art.

4. Marham
Vocals: Suresh Wadkar
Lyrics: Manoj Yadav
Composed and produced by Simran Hora
Language: Hindi
Genre: Light Music
Mood: Romantic
Here is the second single from 'Lagangey' the album by Simran Hora. 'Roshni' a couple of weeks back topped the charts across India and this too is a spellbinding melody with the vocals of the legendary Suresh Wadkar. After all this vocalist even performed for Maestro Ilaiyaraja in 'Aye Zindagi Gale Laga Le'. Keba Jerwmiah plays the rhythm guitar and Tapas Roy plays the strokes in the intro. Manoj Yadav floors you with his words and Suresh Ji carries that message with such eloquence in his singing, Listen to the opening line " Sun Ae Mere mehram, Dil Ka Tu Hai Marham".
Simran goes on to write these amazing notes backed up by Rithu Vysakh's strings and accompanying keys and bass guitar. "Guzarna, Guzarke Guzar le, Ab Isse adhik kya hai Mangna", and truly all these lines are "dil ka marham" Mr. Simran Hora. Keba lightens the heart with that fine melody on the guitar, but he is not alone as the Piano comes and grows on you like this blissful breeze. Could it be any less impactful when the brilliant Siddhart Pandit is on the Piano?
Simran excels as a composer because of his commitment and vision to write melodies that stand out. Follow this antara for instance as we come to the end of the line "Hum bin kahaan kuch rehta hai", and then we have a phenomenal detour in the chord progression as the mood changes too in "Rasta Tu Main Tera, Chalna Hoon rre, har janam har dafa ka milna, Kharch main tujhi Pe ho jaaun Saara, bas Yahi toh hai kamaana" with the some tantalising percussions as well. One wonders why Suresh Ji doesn't get to perform so much, listening to his outstanding delivery, tone, and harkarein. Maybe he was waiting for a melody like this! The tracks are mixed by Hemanth.

5. Mila Tujhe
Singers: Vishal Mishra, Prateeksha Srivastava
Additional Voice Effects: Padmaja Sreenivasan
Lyrics: Raj Shekhar
Song Composed And Arranged By: Justin Prabhakaran
Language: Hindi
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
This movie is going to get a lot of eyeballs after July 11, 2025, on Netflix, as the trailer generated sufficient interest, especially because of the cast, the director, and the music. To me, this was the best song of the album, as Justin Prabhakaran weaves a heartwarming tune and piles on the bazookas with two amazing vocalists in Vishal Mishra and Prateeksha Srivastava. That cute intro with th e female voice effects by Padmaja Sreenivasan.
The melody is written by Justin and the lyrics are by Raj Shekhar. Vishal makes you feel loved with his delivery. I love the line " waise zyada nahin hai pehchaan tujhse, lage phir bhi kyun sab hai aasaan tujhse" as the whole chemistry between the two is brought out in two lines. Kudos to Raj Shekhar. The Piano is mild but playful and the chorus of singers delivers this hook line "thodi thodi halchal hai tujhse" with vocalists Sugandh Shekar, Ishan Rojindar, Vinay Verma, Indu Sanath, Nayansee Sharma, and Aishwarya Kumar.
Prateeksha joins and her delivery is so apt, emotionally perfect to suit the longing and shyness of a lover. The antara has this fantastic melody with "Hain Besabar thode se magar, Rehne Bhi de na zara ankaha" and it feels exquisite when Prateeksha sings the second half of the line in a different key. The strings are by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. The Nose flute is played by Justin and the flute solo is by P Vijay Ananth. The gradeur is because of the orchestration and credits for this go to Beven Elankumaran who also has done all the additional programming along with Dan Kristen.
The recording engineers are Rupjit Das, Vishnuraj MR and Senthil Prasad. The tracks are mixed by Balu Thankachan, assisted by Paul Daniel, Sreenivasa Sharma and mastered by Gethin John.

6. Kanne Kanave
Song Composed, Arranged and Produced by Sreekanth Hariharan
Lyrics - Karthik Netha
Singers - Sreekanth Hariharan, Sireesha Bhagavatula
Language: Tamil
Genre: Folk-Pop/Light Music
Mood: Romantic
I was very impressed with this Tamil movie album 'DNA' released recently and it is amazing how 5 different composers combined to make a 5-track album that works collectively and individually each song speaks a distinct language as well. Had this been Bollywood we would have gotten a distasteful kichdi. This single is composed, arranged and produced by Sreekanth Hariharan who is a fine singer and also his indie singles have impressed me as a songwriter too. Karthik Netah is the lyricist.
Nikhil Ram's flute montif, and the collective upliftment that emanates from the harmonies by Aparna Harikumar, Charu Hariharan and Sushmita Narasimhan is a terrific intro to set things up. Sreekanth is the lead vocalist along with Sireesha Bhagavatula. The highlight reel for me is the titlephrase "kanne kanavey kaarazhagey" and this is where I could hear fragments of Harikambhoji Ragam. I hear so much happening in the background with the percussions, especially that Ghatam all thanks to Charu. The song's tone does remind me of AR Rahman's "Athangara Maramey" from 'Kizhakku Cheemaiyile', with the flourish of the folkish pop.
The interlude Nikhil Ram's flute solo and the strings section accompanying is elaborate and evocative, kudos to Sreekanth for this fine melody here. Sireesha joins in the charanam and he high-pitched ghamakas are well executed. Keba mixes in the Charango and guitars right through. Ashwin Raja does all the additional programming. The fantastic quarter playing the strings are Herald Antony and Nibu Mathew on the violins, Sravan Krishnakumar on the Viola and Albin Jose on the Cello. The recording engineers are Maniratnam & Vishnu M Namboothiri at The Mystic's Room, and Shyam at M Lounge, Kochi. The mixing and mastering is done by Balu Thankachan at 20dB Black, assisted by Paul J Daniel.

7. Neeyaakum Neeril
Music: Bijibal
Lyrics: Harinarayanan. B. K
Singers: Ganesh Sundaram, Subha Rajesh
Language: Malayalam
Genre: Light Music
Mood: Romantic
Bijibal is in one heck of a purple patch composing some fantastic melodies. Just last week I featured a song by him called 'Evideyaa Prakasham', sung by Ranjith Jayaraman, and here he is with one more heartwarming tune. I have never heard these two singers before and they perform with such poise. Ganesh Sundaram stuns you with "Ekandham Sanjaram" but the highlight is the pause between the two words and the violins that fill the gap. Francis Xavier is the solo violinist and the strings are played by Kochi Strings.
Subha Rajesh carries that Sujatha ji's texture in her delivery and it feels beautiful to hear her perform a romantic song like this. Get a hold of the interlude with the solo violin playing a taunting melody and accompanied by a sea of violins. The Mandolins are lush with the groovy bass, by Anuragag Rajeev Nayan. We never get to hear the way timeless songs of the 1990s had two varied interludes, and Bijibal gives us that with one flute-led and the other violin-led. The flute is played by Subhash Cherthala, and Poby Paulson is the keyboardist. The charanam is beautifully written and adds to the song's overall likability.

8. Aaina
Vocals, Lyrics and Composition: Apeksha Pai
Produced by Sai Keshav
Language: Hindi
Genre: Soft-Rock
Mood: Immersive
Atharv Sinha plays the tantalising acoustic guitars and there are two layers, one as tch rhythm guitar in the background and another playing a melody as a lead guitar. He also has composed the guitar bits for this song. Apeksha Pai is an artist I am hearing for the very first time, and she has already gotten me quite excited. She begins to perform the vocals singing "Aaina", and her delivery invokes feelings of being awestruck. It is almost as if she is calling out to the listener singing "Aao Na". There is a brazen attitude in her tone and that reminds me of powerhouse performers like Sunidhi Chauhan. Apparently, Sunidhi is a star that Apeksha looks up to for inspiration.
Her improvisation is quite effective, and how she manages to do this with just one word 'Aaina'. Well, this is like a mirror she is showing to young indie musicians, so that they learn, practise and grow as better performers. Wow, she is in fire-mode with "Na na Chali main, Na, Na Na Rkhi Main". These are moments when the melody reminds me of AR Rahman's "Jiya Re" from the album 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'. Getting now to the lyrics, which is also penned by Apeksha talks with great intent and content about we as humans judge ourselves quite hard. "Aaine mein, kuch shaq sa hai, Jo Dikhe kuch kami hai".
Sai Keshav is the man in charge of music production and arrangements and he does well to get the drums and strings section arrangements on board giving this a very soft-rock flavour. I love this relatable video showing people and how they look at themselves in the mirror. The bridge section gets more energetic as we get the electric guitar support too in the background. This segment is a revival of the story as the protagonist must get back control and stop worrying about what others say, so the lyrics go "Kyu na main dekh pau aajkal, na main dekh pau woh kahe jo mujhe". The tracks are mixed and mastered by Sai Keshav.

9. Meri Dhun
Composed, written, arranged and sung by Kalyani Nair
Language: Hindi
Genre: Ballad
Mood: Mild Pathos
Kalyani Nair is a gifted musician and a great example of how a woman musician should take the bull by its horns and turn every opportunity into gold. After making long-lasting impressions as a playback singer, she is now slowly but steadily making her mark as an indie singer-songwriter. The expansive spread of The Indian Choral Ensemble is another proof of her growing influence in Indian music. Here Kalyani goes solo as she writes the melody, the Hindi lyrics, performs the lead vocals and does all the arrangements as well.
Keba Jeremiah plays the gentle acoustic guitar like a companion who just walks beside. Bhuvanesh starts upping the ante with the Piano, along with the string section in the background. The Budapest Scoring Orchestra is creating the magic on strings. The calming effect when you hear "Tu Sun ohh.. Meri Dhun". There are segments here where I am tempted to think if there is some Raag Charukeshi. The arrangements of the strings, acoustic guitar and Piano are immaculate, allowing at times the vocals to breathe life and then combining as a cohesive force (especially during the second verse).
The song flows through like a rollercoaster of emotions and that is because of the skilled songwriting by Kalyani. There is joy when we hear "meri Dor hai tu" with the pacy Pianos and the pathos re-emerges when we hear "Tu dava, tu ghum". Kalyani pens the words and melody as an ode to her love for music itself. As we head to the chorus the second time, we get the mild drums by Vasanth David, electric guitars by Keba and we are in soft-rock territory here. The recording engineers are Vishnuraj MR at 2bq Studios, Hariharan at 20DB Sound Studios Chennai. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Sujith Sreedhar at 2bq Studios.

10. Kaun Gali Gayo Shyam
Music - Aditya Pushkarna
Singer - Pooja Tiwari
Language: Hindi
Genre: Contemporary Classical
Mood: Uplifting
Pooja Tiwari, a bubbling energetic precocious vocalist, composer and arranger, has sung this contemporary classical Thumri set in Khamaaj Thaat. The music production, sound design is by Aditya Pushkarna who also has played the keys, synths and drum machines with the soothing flute solo display by Harshit Shankar and Tabla by Akshay Jadhav. This song is part of the Live Sessions of The Bombay Chill, a project that I am keenly looking forward to for more such fantastic takes on classical music and more.
Harshit leads the way with that gentle flute amidst the heavy keys, and Pooja's aalap is moving and enthralling as she starts adding subtle, and substantial harkatein in the mukhda. The solo flute interlude is elaborate and feels like a walk in the clouds. Pooja takes this one phrase "bata De" and plays around with it in the Antara. The aalaap reaches explosive proportions after "Gokul Dhoonda, Brindavan Dhoondi" and this track is allows Pooja to truly display what her immense capabilities are. Anubhav Gogoi is the engineer.
