Here are the best songs released in India across languages and genres for the week ending    27th April 2025

1. Saadho

Vocals, Composition: Pavithra Chari

Arrangements, Production: The Anirudh Varma Collective

Lyrics: Kabir Das

Language: Traditional

Genre: Classical Fusion

Mood: Inspiring

The brilliance of The Anirudh Varma Collective continues and with a song almost every week being featured for the last few weeks here is one more mindblowing fusion track from 'Sabr' the album. The melody has Raag Bhairavi (Sindhubhairavi in Carnatic) written all over and the intro begins with Soumitra Thakur's Sitar solo, along with Madhur Chaudhary's bass guitars and Suyash Gabriel's drums. Pavithra Chari comes and just establishes her presence with her classically emboldened vocals. The harkatein that she delivers is generous and graceful. Pavithra has composed the melody and the arrangements are by The Anirudh Varma Collective.

Shrikant Bishwakarma can be heard playing the zappy electric guitars, and slowly the arrangements get thick and heavy. Varun Rajashekharan plays the unmistakable Ghatam, but the heart feels heavy with the notes on the Sitar. Things get very interesting when we have Rohan Prasanna join in with his Sarod solo and the tete-a-tete is a music lover's haven. Pavithra takes us on a ride into the gates of paradise with her amazing vocals and Anirudh makes every segment feel thrilling and blissful with his arrangements and production.

Just stop doing what you are up to and surrender to Pavithra's aalap, along with the harmonies and instrumental arrangements that glorify the outro. The tracks are recorded by Jonty Indra with Anirudh's mixing and Shawn Hatfield on mastering.

2. Nizhal

Conceived, Composed and Sung by Job Kurian

Lyrics: Engandiyoor Chandrasekharan

Arrangement & Guitars: Rony George

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Pop-Ballad

Mood: Pathos

Job Kurian is one man who gets the job done every time. His conceptualization of a song is where he strikes the first blow and a hard, good one. This called 'Nizhal' is a splendid song that will grow on you and follow you like a Nizhal (shadow). We hear the very mild Piano by JOb and the Strings played by Krishnakumar, arranged by Varkey. The lyrics are by Engandiyoor Chandrasekharan, and they are used to create some haunting mesmerism with the help of a melody written and performed by Job Kurian.

Rony Goerge plays the acoustic guitars and handles all the arrangements. My favourite line is "Hey nizhal aatam kaanam tharaaro" with the high-pitched vocals and the strings section in the background. He touches your heart and makes a deep impression with the way he lands his notes, filled with passion and emotion. Ananthu Nirmal brings on the rhythm and groove when the verse begins again, and Binoy Rethnakaran (ret) brings on the funk with his bass guitars. The mind attains a sense of calm when Job sings, giving those gentle heartfelt vibratos. This line makes me weep with a deep sense of love for all things around me " azhakaay alivaay niramaay varoo, nirayaan uyeraan pon tharamaay"

We assume we have heard the best parts of the song, and that is when this interlude comes about with a strikingly inspiring choral ensemble arranged by Evugin Emmanuel. The performers here are Vinesh, Joel G Bensiar, Sreejith Beard, Eguvin, Krithi Sounder, Riya Ann, Vineetha Jude and Aleena. Rex Vijayan is the mastermind behind the fantastic mixing and mastering of the tracks.

3. Dooray

Composed by Alokananda Dasgupta

Singer: Shreya Ghoshal

Live Arrangement & Orchestration by: Alokananda Dasgupta

Lyricist: Rajeshwari Dasgupta Ghose

Music Production by: Alokananda Dasgupta

Language: Bangla

Genre: Ballad

Mood: Pathos

Shreya Ghoshal and Alokananda Dasgupta combine to give us a haunting track that will take us back to olden and golden Calcutta. My wife whose family hails from Kolkata, said that she enjoyed the visuals and the music in particular when she saw the movie in the theatre. Alokananda is one composer who is capable of giving authenticity to visuals through her musical score. She did that with the Amazon Prime series 'Jubilee' with her all-around lead in composition, arrangements and orchestration the song truly feels mesmerising and nostalgic.

The Piano by Alokananda is mild and just coming alongside Shreya's vocals is the solo on Cellos by Vignesh. The humming portion is accompanied by the Pianos which now sound funky and filled with all the goodness of Jazz. Balaji plays the morose-sullen solo violin and this song is devoid of any rhythms allowing all the live instrumentals and arrangements to captivate. Rajeshwari Dasgupta Ghose is the lyricist. The song catches from a spark and grows into a wildfire when Shreya sings "Haarey Dooray" as both the cello and violin soloists magnify the impact.

Chris Mathai is the music assistant, the tracks are mixed and mastered by Keshav Dhar and the recording engineers are A Manivannan at Seven Heaven Studios and Ashwath Ram. Balasubramanian G is the Orchestra Co-ordinator and Supervisor.

4. Kalangaadha

Composed and performed by Shradha Shanmughan

Lyrics: Sathish Madhusudhanan

Music Production: Gidel Jacob, Joel Antony

Additional Vocals: Vaishnav Girish

Language: Tamil

Genre: Pop

Mood: Happy

What a beautiful surprise this was! A young female musician named Shradha Shanmughan shared her indie release when I got in touch with her after featuring her vocals in a new Tamil movie called "Niram Maarum Ulagil". It is so heartening to see young musicians do all the hustle, sing for major production houses, bannets etc and still try and keep creating music on their own. This is a fine melody composed and performed by Shradha with lyrics by Sathish Madhusudhanan. Shradha kept bringing a smile to my face now and then when she there a surprise with her songwriting.

It starts in a very pedestrian way, with a rhythm guitar and the vocals also being very simple. Vaishnav Girish joins on additional vocals in the background. The arrangements on harmonies start getting very nice and interesting when Shradha starts singing "kaalam kai koodume". The Chorus segment feels fresh, lush and beautiful with the generous acoustical guitar riffs and Shradha's wonderful voice. Just like the words "Kalangaadha" even a sad heart might start feeling some relief upon hearing this segment.

The interlude gives reason for an uprising and now you can rise from your state of sadness thanks to the excellent electric guitar solo. Kudos to Gidel Jacob and Joel Antony for their fine work on arrangements and music production. The verse that opens up after this interlude is where Shradha shines as a composer with notes that start treading a path I couldn't predict. "Thaniyoru theevadhan Nee Vaazha Nondheney, Unna Suthi Karayathaan Naan Marava", is a beautiful line written by Sathish as the lyricist, providing such strong words of love and support.

Shradha powers through in the next line and these notes are the highlight for me because composers would generally repeat the same notes twice, but hear what Shradha does with the words " aavaen naan kavala" at the end of "Puyaladhu vandhalum, Ennalum Andadhhey". This is what a music lover feels elated about when a composer surprises you. The landing lines at the end of the verse "Un Kanavum Nenavaa maarum Theeyamaley Kalangaadha". Shradha doesn't play safe and she explores herself vocally as we get closer to the outro.

The music production team brings on the Piano, strings section and solid rhythms making this one unforgettable number for the week. Le Charles Blue is the mixing engineer and we have the brilliant Rex Vijayan on mastering. Ankur Jajoo does the album art and Yogi is on animation.

5. Sunona

Music Composed and Produced by Sreehari K Nair

Singer: Asha Jeevan

Lyrics: Suhail Koya

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Pop/Light Music

Mood: Happy

This is probably the 2nd or 3rd song from the album that I am featuring in my weeklies, so credit goes to Sreehari K Nair for this fine work on music composition and production for his album "Abhilasham". The combined effect of the Harmonica and acoustic guitars instils a feeling of innocent bliss. Sandeep Mohan plays the guitars and AshaJeevan on male lead vocals ushering in more love and tenderness.

Suhail Koya writes the likes and you only start liking the song more and more just like the lines say " Melum melaake". There is nothing more beautiful, and pristine to hear than a children's chorus in music and that is what Sreehari does in by bringing in Sreya Rupesh, Chinmayi Kiranlal, Shruti Rajesh and Dakshina to perform the chorus line "Suno Na Na Suno Nana". Sandeep's bass guitars along with the keys and rhythms makes this gentle pop melody brighten up our day.

The stanza is a continuation of Sreehari's melody and Asha Jeevan's vocals, but now he lets the children sing even more lines and that just makes this a sweet unforgettable song. Sandeep's Banjo comes and goes in the stanza. The recording engineer is Akshay Kakkoth, and the tracks are mixed and mastered by Harishankar V at Aural Alchemy Productions along with Mix Assistant Santom Jose.

6. Chillu Nee

Music Composed, Arranged and Produced by JK

Lyrics: Vinayak Sasikumar

Singers: Rakhooo, Vishnu Das

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Pop

Mood: Mild Pathos

Going back to 2023, I handed him the Raja Awards for the best young musician/composer for his phenomenal work in 'Thrishankhu'. Here is JK (Jay Unnithan) for the new movie 'Maranamaas' and this is my favourite song on the album. We have two performers I have never featured before Rakhoo and Vishnu Das come in as lead vocalists. I am still trying to fathom the morose-filled vocals of Vishnu, as Rickraj Nath on electric guitars and the flowing Pianos grab my attention.

The song starts off with that mild pathos, but we soon get a nitro-booster of a chorus with performers Moses Toby, Ajmal Fathima Parveen, Anila Rajeev, Tojan Toby, Sakku Saju Kuruvilla and Milan Joy. The heavy drums help in creating that intent and adrenaline pumping. Vishnu is very subtle but also quite successful in letting the words and the melody seep into our system and you feel his pain transferred with the line "Ormagal kaividathe kaathida". JK shines not just as a composer but also in the arrangements of all these elements like Keys, guitars, drums and harmonies.

Tejus does the additional production, with recording engineer Sibin Wilson. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Vivek Thomas at VTP Studios, Kochi. The lyrics are penned by Vinayak Sasikumar

7. Pyaar Ki Talaash

Vocals: Snehdeep Singh Kalsi

Music & Lyrics: Snehdeep Singh Kalsi

Produced/Programmed by: Hrishi Giridhar

When someone talented lays their mind and hands on a project, the outcome gets transformed into something delectable. Hrishi Giridhar has produced and programmed for this song and we get a fantastic blanket of Jazz covering all over. Snehdeep Singh Kalsi also writes the lyrics, and the melody and performs the lead vocals to take us on a joyful boat ride on a moonlit night. That is how the sound design and every element feels in this song.

Hrishi plays the suave Melodica in the intro. We get the lovely rhythms of the drums, strings section and the double bass to accompany Snehdeep in the verse. The interlude is richly designed with the Trumpet and the Piano. The melody and lyrics convey that engaging sense of pathos when we hear " Sau saale pehle tujhe hua tha pyaar, magar aaj ki baat kuch aur hai. Uski Aankhon ke siva, duniya mein rakha bahut kuch aur hai", is very touching especially with Snehdeep's delivery that has the right emotions and mild vibrato.

The backing vocal arrangements and the slow tempo are two more massive pluses for this very beautiful track. Himanshu Shirlekar is the mix/master engineer and the recording engineer is Ankesh Chandankhede at Studio 504.

8. Weightless

Written and Performed by Martin Garrix, Arijit Singh

Produced by: Martin Garrix

Language: Hindi

Genre: Electronic Pop

Mood: Uplifting

Arijit Singh, I have always maintained, has been solid and inspiring as a composer and producer in the indie space, much more than a vocalist in Bollywood. Here he collaborates with Martin Garrix, a globally renowned DJ and Producer for this song that lifts some weight off our chest. The heavy Piano and Arijit's mesmerising voice that borders along the falsetto mode is just a great combination to uplift the spirits.

Martin adds all his prowess giving us some scintillating sound design and music production. The electronic pop flavours are enriching. The melody has little variation, but all that gets compensated with the vocals and tonality of the song.

9. Hum Tum

Lyrics, Singer, Composition: Rucha

Music Producers: Neil-Niraj

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Happy

Nothing is more satisfying than when a new name brings a wide smile through their music. Everything gets ticked in the right boxes right from the intro, as we hear a nice chorus of singers Neha Saxena, Raj Nandini, Niraj V, Sagar G and Neil Gandhi, lush acoustic guitars by Dhananjay Chhettri(Doie), the accompanying drums by Febin Bijoy and a melody well written by Rucha.

Rucha performs the lead vocals, other than her role as the writer as well, and within seconds, I am drawn and awestruck with the line "Haan ek baat kehni hai tumse" followed by a pause and my heart skips a beat as well. The guitar teases in the pause and "Tu haste tu kaisa lage, Saari ki Saari kaaynaat jaise" performed by Rucha and the backing vocalists is a beautiful line melodically and lyrically. The incoming strokes played by Dhananjadddds a layer of innocence and the song takes off from there.

The singers ask us "Muskurao Na" and how can I not as a music lover when I hear this? Harmeet Singh plays the Cajon and we also get the tantalising basslines by Indrajeeth Handque. A big round of applause needs to be given to the music production and arrangements by Neil-Niraj. The introduction of the flute solo is something that I was taken by surprise in a very positive way. Rohan Khandale is the flautist. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Niraj Vishwakarma. The flute solo, with the harmonies, drums and lead vocals, is a beautiful finish to the end.

10. Aasaan Mohabbatein

Vocals: Meera and Sagar Verma

Written by: Meera and Sagar Verma

Produced by Meera and Sagar Verma

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Meera and Sagar Verma get together in this gentle, swaying melody that will leave your heart fonder and heavier by the end of it. The two lovely artists write the lyrics, compose the melody, produce the music and render the lead vocals in this sweet collaboration. The mild guitars, the strings section and the vocals alone do the magic without any rhythms or percussions to take us forward.

In unsion, the two sound beautiful like the morning sun, with a streak of a mandolin creeping in towards the end of the verse. I love how they pause for half a second maybe and that creates such a warm impact. The guitar solo is one segment that glorifies and lifts the likability of the song for me. Aditya Shukla is the mixing and mastering engineer for this project.
