1. Seelay Seelay

Music Composed, Arranged and Produced by Sean Roldan

Singers: Sean Roldan, Chinmayi Sripada

Lyrics: Uma Devi

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music/Pop

Mood: Romance

Sean Roldan is like The Godfather Trilogy or The Dark Knight Trilogy, where the rules of sequels don't apply and each new movie is as good as, if not better than, the prior. Sean is incredibly consistent with his fantastic music composition, and his streak just extends and keeps one-upping the prior. After having loved his 2026 albums “My Lord” and “With Love”, here comes the first single from his next project ‘29’, and this is the definition of “terrific music”. Rithu Vysakh makes you numb with the strings (violins in the intro), and what can you tell about Sean’s voice? Truly, as the words go “nanjam polambuthe”, and the effect on the Piano along with the pallavi, is heartening to hear.

The song is composed, arranged and produced by Sean Roldan with lyrics by Uma Devi and the lead vocals helmed by Chinmayi Sripada and Sean. The more he sings, we do feel the heart becoming heavy and as Uma Devi rightly points out, “Kangal Kalangudhe”. The chorus segment is the moment when I felt like I had entered the threshold of paradise. The keys and rhythms are like the stairway to heaven, and the interlude with Ashish Venkateshwaran on the flute and Rithu on strings helps the song move forward like a bridge to the charanam. Chinmayi, who is generally irreplaceable when it comes to Ballads and Pathos, mesmerises with her first note singing “kannadi munne naanum naana illai”. When I hear the next line of the charanam “nee vandhai en nenjathin siragaga”, I feel glimpses of Shankarabharanam Ragam.

The ending part of the charanam that goes “Vaan pirai kooda Oru naalil vizhi moodi Ilaipaarum nam kaadhal Olitheerummaaaa” is incredibly written by Sean, with the chord progression being immensely satisfying to the music lover. How many songs do we hear in movies these days with 1-minute-long verses (charanams) that are comprised of 3-4 long, unique phrases? Don’t bother answering that! The chorus line “Seelay Seelay” reminds me of that old song “Kalvi a Selvam a Veeram a”. The song is not just a charmer for its melody, but the programming, production , and sound design are emphatic too. The second interlude with the flute and Chinmayi’s humming is another segment where I was wondering if there was any Raag Bihag involved here. The charanam that follows here too has shades of the Raagam taking me back to “Un Parvaiyil Orayiram by Maestro Ilaiyaraja.

Sean Roldan goes one up on himself again, giving a second stanza that is fresh and completely different from the first atleast for the first phrase, or in western songwriting, you could call it a bridge section. “Suzhalum soora ulagail Kavalaigal maranthu” is the phrase I am talking about here, as it is entirely different from “Kannaadi munne naanum naana illai” we heard in the first stanza. I request you to stop reading now and just keep listening to this blissful music on repeat. Hariharan at 20db Sound Studios and Sabari Bharathi Krishna at Roldan Records, Vishnu M at Mystics Room, and Aswin George John at Sounds Right are the recording engineers. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Aswin George John at Sounds Right.

2. Alvida

Composed, Produced & Written By: Raghav & Arjun

Performed by: Anubha Kaul, Kamakshi Khanna and Raghav & Arjun

Language: Hindi

Genre: R&B

Mood: Groovy

“Tera Mera hai rishta jo bhi” sings this outstanding vocalist Anubha Kaul, who is known to cause severe heartbreak to avid listeners. The song is composed and written by a duo I immensely respect , Raghav & Arjun, who are like Karan-Arjun, hitting excellence every single time with their creative projects. The piano comes and sends mild shivers, for the earth has still not begun to shake. The music production is also handled by Raghav & Arjun, who skillfully assess and employ the right tools in sound design. I feel a trembling emotional air surrounding me, and the pathos is produced by the way Anubha executes this vulnerable tone with a touch of despair in her voice.

The Piano notes begin to flourish and embellish the interlude, and the choral arrangements elevate this phase. Veljon Noronha plays the guitar from this moment on, as the second verse is all about Kamakshi Khanna’s controlled flamboyance. The string section arrangements and rhythms, along with some stunning bass and Piano interventions, make this an elevating experience. But the master stroke for me was when we heard a female humming, sending our emotions to a sky-high orbit. Kamakshi stuns you with the line “deewaron par kahin naam sajaun saath tere”, also full marks to the melodic beauty of the phrase.

Kudos to the composers for writing the bridge section that progresses into a zone of unpredictable notes and touches. That is why Raghav & Arjun rock because they can think and write music that moves and surprises. “ Woh Saare khwaab jo phir pure agar na huey”, is the line I am talking about.  I don't think any wise individual can say ‘alvida’ to ladies who sing like this. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Prathamesh Dudhane at Bombay Live Studios, with Praneeth Kumar assisting. Kudos to the entire team comprising Shivi Arora, Karan Vaid & Annie Bafna, Akshay Nair, directing the video, and Aditya Verma on editing.

3. Dualities

Performed by Vizluna

Composed, Arranged by Urja Kumbhare

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Pathos

This artist absolutely threw me off guard, as I was hearing Vizluna for the very first time, and her vocals were top-notch. The song here is part of her album ‘Unsent Love Letters’, which I hope to listen to soon, but this song. She doesn't waste any time as she improvises and uses the falsetto on “but it's music to my ears”. However, this song is just not about her impeccable voice; it is also about the beautiful melody that is written here, Urja Kumbhare (also Vizluna), and she also does the Piano-heavy arrangements for this song. “ That feels like growing apart, like growing out of alignment with you, and still I go in circles round and round” is a testament to her abilities as a songwriter.

The piano alone handles all the misery and agony of the song’s mood with drums driving the rhythms, and the words perfectly bring out her dilemma in this relationship. “Thats because there is nothing between us, yet the flipside is how anything you do is attractive to me” encapsulates the situation. The way she sings the words “dualities”, mixing the normal and falsetto tones, is another vocal duality as well. This is easily one of the best vocal performances in 2026 so far, and I cannot wait to hear more of this monstrous performer.

4. Jhini Jhini

Performed by Savni Bhatt, Kanakshree Bhatt

composed by Aashish Sudarshan Vilekar

Arranged by Anand Kurhekar

Lyrics: Kabir

Language: Traditional Hindi

Genre: Semi-classical

Mood: Divinity

Music is not just for pleasure and entertainment; it also educates, and that is precisely what I gained when I listened to this beautiful composition by Aashish Sudarshan Vilekar. The melody belongs to Raag Bhinna Shadaj, and I had no idea about this raag, even though I have been an admirer of Ragas belonging to the Bilaval Thaat, just like this one. Savni Bhatt is the performer whose lead vocals are divine, and we have all the arrangements done by Anand Kurhekar. Together, this team has given a new meaning and life to the great Kabir’s poem.

The Sitar dominates with some Santoor as well strewn around in the intro, but the vocals of Savni Bhatt and Kanakshree Bhatt in unison give us double the joy. Savni tells me that a very famous number, “Udd Ja Re Kaaga” by Lata Mangeshkar, is also based on this Raag. The interlude is led  by the Bansuri and Sitar, and the tranquillity lies in the overall production, with the hand cymbal and Tabla providing the gentle rhythms. The aalaps by both Savni and Kanakshree extend the potency of the song to touch our hearts deeper. Another beautiful phase that keeps ringing in my ears is when both the vocalists take turns singing the sargams.

5. Maano Na Yaar

Vocals - Akshata Kulkarni

Composed and written by Shubham Mody, Akshata Kulkarni, Prakhar Yadav

Produced and Engineered by Shubham Mody

Arranged by Prakhar Yadav

Language: Hindi

Genre: Jazz/Bossa Nova

Mood: Groovy

Shubham Mody, Akshata Kulakarni, and Prakhar Yadav combine to give us a refreshing Jazz-Pop single here. Whether it is Akshata’s vocals, the arrangements by Prakhar, or the overall production and sound design by Shubham, it is all aces. Shubham gives us moments of exhilaration on drums, and when he improvises at the chorus line, “Mano Na yaar”, it feels like the drums are egging you on. Another terrific plus for this song is the harmonies, and we have the backing vocalists Dev Bhardwaj, Anusha Kaushal, Prakhar Yadav, and Shubham Mody performing and elevating the gaps in the melodic phrases with their own distinct lines.

I love the pauses when she sings every word here, “Ab toh tum bhi”. Shubham plays the rhythm guitar, with suave basslines, and the phrase that follows sprang a surprise in terms of the chord progression “tum bhi keh do na”. Prakhar is the programmer on duty with all of his arrangements. Here comes a moment when the drums settle, and there is a hauntingly beautiful humming in the interlude. Prakhar’s keys and synths set the tone, and to spice things up further, the saxophone solo by Shubham is resplendent, turning on all my senses. Where did that indian classical aalap come from? Akshata shines with the vocal rhythms provided by the backing vocalists. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Shubam, with Sarthak Mody directing the video and Rishita Yadav handling the artwork.

6. WHO YOU ARE

Written by RANJ

Produced by CLIFR

Performed and Composed by RANJ x CLIFR

Language: Tamil/English

Genre: R&B/Hip-Hop

Mood: Groovy

I have to make time for this elaborate album of 27 songs called “27 Club”. Being a fan of these two amazing artists RANJ and CLIFR, this is one more of their iconic singles that combines some groovy R&B and pulsating hip-hop, and it is high both on style and substance. The strings by Rohan Ramanna, along with keys and bass, interject the phase between “it’s who you are” giving such an oomph to the chorus line. RANJ is not just a fantastic performer whom you can not avoid; she is also a brilliant writer. Look at how she talks about the ills of society and their gender preferences with this line “Amma said that it’s ok, you’re a daughter of teh sun, but the family fake it, was wishin for a son”.

The melody bits are written by RANJ and CLIFR, and the amazing music production is by the latter. The writing is also deliberately caustic and sharp like “Give a fuck about walking anus, it ain't us”. The introduction of the folkish Tamil lines that we call Oppari down in the south is another highlight of the song as she sings “ en arisaiya kattipoda neenga ninacha, bhoomiyum ariyum amma”, which translates to “ if you think of tying down the Queen (woman), the earth will burn like a raging fire”. This part is arranged by Tenma, and performed and written by Suganthi.

RANJ is so wise, and her writing needs some decoding as well “ I’m hot like where Im from “, referring to parts of Tamil Nadu where the weather is hot most of the year, and the line “ My heart beats cow skin drum” refers to the Mridangam and other folk percussions (which used cow skin for the membrane). Kudos to CLIFR for adding the harmonies that keep coming during the chorus segment. Vivek Thomas, as expected foes a fine job as the mixing and mastering engineer. The music video is written and directed by Apoorva Satish, with Faraz Alam as the DOP.

7. Maatikitaan Minorkunju

Composed, Arranged and Programmed by Nivas K Prasanna

Singers : Sublahshini & Alex Samuel Jenito

Lyrics : Arunraja Kamaraj

Language: Tamil

Genre: Disco

Mood: Dance

Nothing feels like home to me like seeing rural TN and listening to a Maestro Ilaiyaraaja song at the same time. So when I wanted that sitting in Mumbai, this song in the theatres came close to offering me that heavenly feeling thanks to the movie’s Director Sivakumar Murugesan, DOP Vivek Vijayakumar and the composer Nivas K Prasanna. The percussions begin in the intro, and you are straight away reminded of songs like “Raaja Kaiyya Vecha Adhu Wronga Ponathilla”, so kudos to Nivas for giving us a taste of that great memory, and he proves once again, after “Bison Kaalamaadan”, that he's got more than what it takes to be an excellent composer.

Sruthiraj plays all the Latin percussions and Alex Samuel Jenito does the rhythm arrangements. The fine drums and Latin percussion combine exquisitely with all the Brass and Horn section instruments, Babu playing the Trumpets, Trombone and Fugelhorn. When the harmonies go “ribaappabab”, it is a heavy dose of nostalgia and joy to the listener. Alex handles all the harmony arrangements as well, and the music supervisors are Hevin Booster and Alex. I have been saying this for a while now, and Sublahshini can do no wrong these days as she exhibits amazing charisma standalone style to deliver these kinds of songs. I love Arunraja Kamaraj’s writing that goes “ Atom Bomb e enga aatha thanappa, atha thanga pora Nagasaki nangappa”.

Naveen Samson Benjamin plays the electric guitar, and the way this lead guitar and teh drums and horns unite with the chorus singing “Rappabaa Raa” is one of the best hat-tips to Maestro in recent times. SO many of the man’s amazing songs come to mind like “Hey Unnai Thaane”, “Megam Kottatum” and so on. Nivas Prasanna isthe  composer, arranger and producer of all the songs in this album “Thaai Kizhavi”,  and KA Surya Srihari, the usual suspect, is on all the additional programming. Listen to the interlude with the stylish lead guitars in the background and the Horns blowing us away with the instrumental phrase. I also love how Subhlashini correctly sings with the Madurai dialect in mind when she does “ ottaya pottutyaen”.

Hevin Booster and Adarsh at Reengara Studios and Srinath at 2 Bar Q Studios, Vysakh PK at Contrabass Studios, are the recording engineers with Hevin on mixing and mastering duties.

8. Behtar

Composed & Sung by Hansika Pareek

Written by Anurag Mishra

Music Produced by Aditya Bisht

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romance

Just look at this list of musicians involved in this single, and you will know what to expect. Hansika Pareek, a songstress par excellence, composes and performs with the words of another bright talent in Anurag Mishra. To round things off, we have Aditya Bisht on music production. Aditya rightly chooses the keys as the driving force of rhythms, and his intervention on the Piano also makes for some catchy riffs. Nothing speaks love as loud as the flowy Piano in my honest opinion. Anurag writes “ jab se mila tu, iss zindagi pe, mujko yajon ho gaya”, and you can hear the tone of Hansika’s voice, subtle and understated.

“Ehsaan tera muj par hua, milke tujhe dil behtar hua”, is the most beautiful line of the song, and with the introduction of the rhythm guitar, I am taken back to a all time masterpiece “ ehsaan tera hoga mujh par”, purely for the beauty of the words and the strength in the language. In a world filled with toxic love, when a girl sings “ dil behtar hua” looking at her partner, it does make you feel positive and joyous. If it had to be compared to something, Aditya Bisht is making this song’s sound design feel like slow poison, with the addition of the nice jaunty rhythm and keyboard programming in the second verse. The way Hansika reaches for the stars in the high-pitched chorus line is just magic. Gibson George is teh mixing/mastering engineer.
