1. Roshni

Composed and Produced by Simran Hora

Vocals: Javed Ali

Lyrics: Manoj Yadav

Language:

Genre: Light Music/Pop

Mood: Romantic

After I listened to his score in 'Kota Factor y S3', Simran Hora impressed me wildly. Ironically, he belongs to a rare clan of composers who create music that touches our souls and does not sell them to the devil called money. This is a new Album called "Lafangey" a web-series on MX player, I request all of you reading my website to kindly go and check out this son, album and this man's work overall.

My purpose is served when I listen to and recommend songs like these. Simran composes this ravishing melody, and you can make out from the chord progression and the notations that this man is here to establish that in a song, the melody is King. He appoints Javed Ali as the lead vocalist, and the latter responds to this call with such poise that I had to stop the song midway just so that I could absorb and enjoy what I just heard. Simran does not wait or waste time as the very first line of the song straightaway lands you on to the stairway to heaven.

"Aadhi Aadhi Hogi Puri", Javed Ali sings, as though saying he and Simran are making two amazing halves, but that is not all about this song. Listen to the bravado on the strings displayed by this one-man-string-quartet who goes by the name Rithu Vysakh- Naam toh suna hi hoga! A layer of violin playing the melody, with the Cello riffs in the background. Keep your heart ready for what's about to come, people! Javed Ali sings " Gubaar Hai, Gubaar hai, sab yahaan gubaar hai" referring to teh darkness aall around, and then he calls out to this stroke of light and hope with the magical line "Tu ban ja Roshni, surkh Roshni".

What can I tell about the notes especially when the chord progression that emerges in "surkh Roshni"? Manoj Yadav is equally vivid and descriptive in his lyrics. When was the the last time in an Indian album you heard an interlude of stunning proportions that too, something that lasted a whole 25 seconds? Rithu plays the solo violin and the melody and execution sways you like a mother's lullaby. Thank you Simran for writing these melodies portions and giftwrapping it all with your masterly arrangements and production.

The Antara begins and the Javed-Manoj-Simran Trio keep knocking us down. Having grown up listening to Maestro Ilaiyaraja, I am astounded to hear that fabulous Nylon guitar intervention by Keba Jeremiah and Sandeep Mohan after "Mile Mouka toh dil banna". The Antara ends with a beautiful line "Kori, Kitaabon mein kahaaniya, utaare de", and we have Keba, Sandeep and Rithu responding with a beautiful concoction of the acoustic guitar, bass and Violin.

Tapas Roy is the next brilliant instrumentalist and he engages us with that blue-grass style banjo and Mandolins, Javed Ali slowly but steadily conquers our hearts with "DHeemi Dheemi thay hogi". The tracks are mixed by Hemanth.

2. Pottala Muttaye

Composed, Arranged and Produced by Santhosh Narayanan

Lyrics: Vivek

Singers: Santhosh Narayanan, Sublahshini

Language: Tamil

Genre: Folk-pop

Mood: Romantic

I was extremely excited when I heard that Santhosh Narayanan is composing music for this rom-com movie starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, because it is simple and rooted subjects like these that allow a musician and even actors to shine without the pressure of numbers and mass appeal. This song immediately lived up to the expectation of that hope and dream and Santhosh created a fascinating Nattupura paatu (folk song). With his vocal tone, rawness and likability Santhosh picks himself as the male lead vocalist but the killer shot was getting Sublahshini to perform the female lead vocals.

She has been one of the most featured vocalists on my website of late with an outstanding display of playback singing in movies as well indie music. Sublashshini wastes no time as the folkish humming wakes you up from your slumber with that groovy kick in her voice. The Thavil by Karthik Vamsi ensures you land up in Tamil Nadu and now there is no looking back. The writing is just fantastic with such a creative set of words like "Va da en amubli machane, enna ambula thechane". Well done Vivek, who is just rising in leaps and bounds these days.

A Santhosh song depends more than just on the melody and you can be witness to his vision and magic if you listen to the funky bass lines by Naveen Napier and that mild Accordion in the background as we hear the line "ooril kandathum illa yaarum, unnatum". The brilliance of the song comes out just after this line as you wonder what Santhosh is going to do with the chord progression. Sublahshini sings "Kodi chandiran undu nalliravu vidiyun mattum", as the last two words soar high into paradise. She extends the ending notes a little longer even as Santhosh starts singing his line. Notationally, vocally and lyrically this is like striking gold.

I do expect a lot when this guy composes his music, so it was a minor disappointment to hear the Nadaswaram by Bala Subramani, playing out a short and generic interlude, but the payoff for this melody came much later in the outro, which we will discuss later. The Thavil, and other percussions (maybe the Urumi) along with the whistle and Santhosh's vocalising bits keep the energy high and dance mode on. The "Velanjirukkum en vethala kodi" line reminds me of gems of Maestro like "Kattavandi Kattavandi" and "Pothuvaga en Manasu", and that is a great compliment. Sublashsini demolishes us with her cuteness with lines like " Kuthum kudumbu mooku, konjam oyveduthu thaaku eyyy", and her ability to induce a spark with subtle improvisations comes to light in " Rathame...Muthhame"

Santhosh plays the Accordions delightfully and in 2025 after his flute solo in "Kanandi Poove" this venture is fresh and nice to see Santhosh express himself more as a multi-instrumentalist. Santhosh, you beauty, when the lines "kenjirane Kenjirane" are sung on a higher pitch and that simple modification sounds fantastic. Remember when I talked abnout the short Nadaswaram interlude, and Santhosh stuns by writing that same melody here in the outro with the line "Nenjukulla poora unna sommanthalum, vandathulla baaram, enna idhu mayam" along with the Keys, amped up percussions. Vivek take a bow for these fantastic love lines. The tempo and collective folk percussions take me back to Maestro's 'Maanguyile', so thank you Karthik Vamsi.

The song ends with simultaneously Santhosh and Sublahshini singing the folk humming and the heart is full having heard this outstanding track. The tracks are recorded, mixed and mastered by Santhosh Narayanan, with Vyshak as the recording engineer as well.

3. Aaj Rang Hai

Singer/Composer: Aabhas - Shreyas

Lyrics: Amir Khusrau & Ravi

Music Producer: Hrishi

Language: Hindi

Genre: Qawwali-Jazz

Mood: Romantic

I have missed them and waited eagerly for their music for over a year. When I finally saw the name Aabhas-Shreyas, my excitement couldn't be contained. This fantastic single (from Project Sukoon) is their usual style of semi-classical fusion music with exceptional vocals, composition, and arrangements. Abbhas-Shreyas composed the song, and they handled the vocals as well. I hear strains of Raag Shanmukhapriya.

The Piano by Shreyas accompanies with that feather touch, and the acoustic guitar comes along as the rhythm guitar. The live instruments slowly impose themselves as Kahaan Shah plays the drums, Kamran Raza delivers the basslines and Hrishi plays the guitars. The melody takes it up a notch as we hear the phrase "Saajan Milavra Saajan Milara More Aangan Mein". These are the words of the legendary Amir Khusrau, the other nicely arranged element is the backing vocals which come and go in the title line " Aaaj Rang Hai, Ma Rang Hai".

The interlude has this gentle swaying nature thanks to the humming and the lyrics that follow in the Antara are penned by Ravi. The lines are beautiful both lyrically and melodically as we hear the soothing "Saajan ke ghar mela saja hai". Aabahs and Shreyas take turns singing the lines and we are enamoured with love and all we want is to either die in the arms of the lover or rest in peace listening to good music. The Antara ends with "Saajan ki baahon mar mar jaaon".

The second interlude is brilliant with the combined effect of the Sargams, the tantalising Latin-style percussions and the flute solo by Shreyas. Tears are rolling down my cheek mildly with the line " Barson se pyaasi Main Dharthi Bechaari". Aabhas and Shreyas add such delicate and divine Harkatein when they sing, and it never feels overdone even for a bit. The outro has the brisk drums and bass drawing the curtains on this excellent track.

4. Sun Ri Sakhi

Composition - Tanmay Pawar

Music Arrangement - Tanmay Pawar & Priyal Pawar

Production, Programming & Mixing - Priyal Pawar

Lead Vocals - Rucha Bondre

Lyrics by - Rucha Bondre

Language: Hindi

Genre: Semi-classical-Blues fusion

Mood: Groovy

After listening to the top 30 contestants of NEXA Season 3, I firmly believe this Tumri-fusion by Rucha Bondre, Tanmay and Priyal Pawar deserves to be at the very top. The belter is written and performed by Rucha as Tanmay weaves a melody rich in Raag Bhimplasi, while Tanmay and Priyal combine to stupefy us with intricate and elaborate arrangements. Tanmay starts things off with that rhythm guitar and soon enough we get the drums to align with the tempo thanks to Priyal.

One cannot avoid or ignore her as Rucha calls out to you with that stress in "Ri" in the phrase "Sun Ri Sakhi". The arrangements are exquisite and you will hear a touch of that class when the line "Barsan Laage" plays and the harmonies prop up. Tanmay and Priyal play the role of backing vocalists. "Pee Ke Daras Ki" is where the strains of Raag Bhimplasi come out clearly for me. Rucha turns around this semi-classical melody into R&B style with that play on "Pyaas Lagi".

The interlude is elaborate as we hear a heavy string section along with the Sargams by lead and backing vocalists. Kudos to Tanmay and Priyal for inducing so much style and substance into the song with their production and sound design. The antara is oozing with even more oomph as we get the drums, bass and harmonies elevating the song further. Advait Vaishampayan is the bassist. Rucha never rests for a second and she performs every note with a lot of bravado and intent. This is what you look for in a national-level competition/show.

The outro sounds majestic with the harmonies, drums and strings rising like a wave that engulfs everything around. Priyal handles all the programming and mixing with Donal Whelan on mastering.

5. Kadu Enga Veedu

Music Composed, Arranged & Programmed by Deepan Chakravarthy Singers: Meenakshi Elayaraja, Meghna Sumesh, Kazhuthu Karthik, Deepan Chakravarthy

Lyricist: Ekadesi

Language: Tamil

Genre: Light Music

Mood: Happy

Am I reading it right? The song is composed arranged and programmed by Deepan Chakravarthy. This is NOT the well-known singer who has sung some amazing melodies, "Devadhai Poloru" and "Poongathave Thaazhthirava" for Maestro Ilaiyaraja in the 1980s and 1990s.  Deepan shares teh exact same name but this young composer has been around since 2016, and made his debut in 2018 for 'Oru Kuppa Kadha'. This is his 8th film and he has composed the score for a movie in 2023 (Sathiya Sothanai), songs for a movie in 2024 (Veerayi Makkal). It felt like an ode to all the amazing songs we have heard in the late 1990s and early 2000s and the kids' chorus makes it a very affable number.

Mahathi, Pragatheesh, Sithayashree and Akshith are performing the Pallavi lines. This is where I felt a strong resemblance to MSV-Rammurthy's "Muthukkalo Kangal", and that is why I presume that the song has strains of Madhyamavathi Ragam. Sruthi Raj amps up the energy with the nice percussions when the adult singers take over and sing the lines "Paati solliya Kadhaiya kettu, patta pagalum thoongala". We have Meenakshi Elayaraja, Meghna Sumesh, Kazhuthu Karthik and Deepan singing the lines as lead vocalists.

The writing is excellent giving a sense of lives spent happily with what is bestowed upon us. Ekadesi pens the lyrics. "Kathu pola, katukkula oduvome enna solla" is another set of lines I love in the song melodically and musically. We have Eazhisaivendhan on additional keys, and Ramesh on Flute solo. Deepan has done a fine job on all the harmonies and instrumental arrangements. Abin Paul is the mixing and mastering engineer.

6. Paint it over me

Composed & Produced by Masala Coffee

Vocals & Lyrics - Razik Mujawar

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Energetic

Masala Coffee is one band that just keeps getting more stimulating with every new release, like serving up a new cup of coffee every time. Anurag Rajeev Nayan and James Stevenson play the rhythm guitar in the intro and Amal Sivan joins in the background with that mortifying violin solo. The energy picks up with the percussions by Varun Sunil and Dayasankar as the drummer. The line "I know it sounds so crazy, but I feel amazing" is accompanied by the stunning sound of the Banjo and the incredible pacy nature reminds of Bluegrass music.

The song bends into electronic pop as we hit the chorus segment, as Razik Mujawar breathes life through his addictive vocals. Sandeep Mohan and Surya Bharadwaj play the Banjo and Mandolin here. The title line ends with that catchy humming. Amal Sivan is playing the violin riff at break-neck speed in the interlude as we now have more instrumental support on drums, bass guitars by Pauly and keyboards by Pranav KS. The song is produced with such a zing and variety that we get painted over by many colours of emotions. The Banjo and Violin combining and delivering those pacy riffs stand as breathtaking junctures in the song.

All the additional programming is by Pranav and Steve Kottoor, and the chorus segment has Abhijith Anilkumar and Poorna on backing vocals. Omkar is the recording engineer at NHQ Studio, the tracks are mixed and mastered by Jayakrishnan Nalinkumar at TAG Studios, Mumbai.

7. May

Vocals, Composition, Lyrics: Vaani Bhasin

Music Production: Donguk

Language: English

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

I always look forward to some artists and when they create a decently high bar for themselves, nothing is more exciting when they cross that high bar with a new project. Vaani Bhasin is here, and with her new single, this talented singer-songwriter made me smile with joy with some delightful songwriting, especially the melody. The writing is engrossing with its details and it's story-telling and the production elevates the song to a global standard.

I am certain that 'May' will find a place in your playlist too. One reason for that dazzling soundscape could be that the song was produced and arranged by Korean musician/producer Donguk. The melody starts off like something you might have heard but where the notes make you take notice is " And I know I know, you might not be sincere". This is where Vaani has graduated from the earlier work as she shows that penchant and commitment to write good melodies with something fresh to admire.

What is love without a little humour and music? She brings in both in the song, with lyrics like "I sing like a proper pop girl, and you are a blues guy for sure". The writing goes on to be clever with lines like " My dream has a face, your indentations". The bridge/outro lets Vaani perform and write with such surety as she expresses how she is certain about the guy now, and May, June or August, this song is one you can listen to all year around if you ever feel like thinking about a guy/girl you love. DAWgeek handles the mastering duties.

8. Nindiya

Singers: Parth Srivastava, Richa Sharma

Music Composer: Parth Srivastava

Lyricist: Parth Srivastava

Producer: Garvit Soni

Language: Hindi

Genre: Semi-classical Ballad

Mood: Soothing

Here comes a ballad, a striking melody that plays ever so softly. The melody has strains of Raag Pilu in my opinion and it deals with the unbreakable bond between a parent and a child. Parth corrects me and tells me that this is rather Raag Mishra Pilu. Parth Srivastava writes the lyrics and the simmering melody. His vocals are perfectly delivered, full of love and care. Everybody who listens can feel, and relate to the words "aaar chanda ki baatein bata jaane re", with just the minimal strings section in the background. Kudos to Garvit Soni for keeping the arrangements subtle but suited.

The combined effect of the humming and the strings is very pacifying. The stanza is where we fall deeper in love thanks to Richa Sharma's lead vocals. She comes on board and delivers lines that make us feel like a warm hug and an equivalent of Lata Mangeshkar Ji in 'Lukka Chuppi'. The Piano is a non-stop accompaniment and in songs like this Garvit understands that less is more. The tracks are mixed by Garvit and mastered by Shivam Verma. Samir Dharap at Input One Studios

9. Kyun

Vocalist, Composer, Lyricist: Neyhal

Produced by Ramil Ganjoo

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Mild Pathos

Simple is beautiful, and that is being displayed here by Neyhal and Ramil Ganjoo. It is just the rhythm guitar playing Robin to Neyhal's Batman as we hear this artist's seductive voice. The pre-chorus gets more emphatic as he sings "Yun mere pass ake dil na thodo, nazron milake yun na chodo", and the keys lay it down in the background along with that faint backing bocal support. Neyhal writes these effective lines that place us right in the middle of this story of love and heartbreak.

Neyhal has been there amongst the most featured artists on this website and that is because he generates that keenness and buzz with a simple yet succulent melody. Ramil Ganjoo comes on board and produces the music with that flair that keeps the decibel levels low, but picks and chooses the right moments to ante up the impact. The tracks are recorded, mixed and mastered by Maadhavan Bhattacharjee.

10. Oliye

Composed, Arranged, and Produced by Mervin Mathew

Lyrics: Jithin Jeevan

Vocals: Sruthy Sivadas

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Mervin Mathew comes out of nowhere for me and becomes the Oliye ( shining light) of the week, with a beautiful melody and ramping it up with an effective array of arrangements. Sruthy Sivadas is in demolition mode, as she uses her vocals to shatter the resilience of anyone trying to resist the beauty in her voice. Jithin Jeevan is the lyricist.

Mervin uses a lot of tricks up his sleeves as he gets the sounds of the guitar, bass, and rhythms all programmed to draw us in. The charanam is where a lot more transpires, especially with the keys and Sruthy's delightful and intoxicating delivery. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Arjun B Nair.
