1. Jiyaa Naahi Laage

Composer: Prajakta Shukre

Lyricist: Himani Kapoor

Vocals: Pratibha Singh Baghel

Produced by Swapnomoy Chowdhury, Nataraj Kshetricha, Kamal Bharti

Language: Hindi

Genre: Contemporary Classical

Mood: Immersive

This is part of a new album called "Raagaanis", which I featured and loved. It has 5 fantastic songs composed by singer/composer Prajakta Shukre and written by singer Himani Kapoor. I found this to be my absolute favourite from the album, and you know when Pratibha Singh performs, you will be stunned into silence and cast a spell of wizardry. When she sings the line "Piya Bin mora" your heart becomes heavy in the sadness of the melody and vocals and Prajakta probably has composed this in the Dharmavati/Madhuvanti scale.

We have the song being produced by Swapnomoy Chowdhury, Nataraj Kshetricha, Kamal Bharti and their method of keeping everything to a minimum works beautifully. A melody like this, set to some emotionally apt writing and delivered with such poignance, hardly needs any excesses and frills. The keyboard programming, with some mild rhythms, leads the way and when we get to the interlude, Varad Kathapurkar comes on and gives us a breathtaking melody on the flute solo. There are layers of the flute, and with Prajakta's notes and the vision of the arrangers, we get a scintillating segment here.

The melancholy continues in the Antara, and it does not make you go away but pulls you deeper as she sings "aas milan ki jaage, naa maane jiyara". The drums are introduced here, it feels like the sound of your heart beating heavily. The flute, electric guitars (played by Swapnomoy), drums, and keys combine once we get to the sthayi, and this time Pratibha unleashes more power with these silky, smooth harkatein. The improvisation by Pratibha with just a single phrase, "Jiya Naahi Laage", is a fitting end to the soulful song. Himanchu Shirlekar is the mixing and mastering engineer.

2. Krishnudukentho

Music Composed and produced by - Judah Sandhy

Lyricist - Kalyan Chakaravarthy

Vocals - Haricharan

Language: Telugu

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

Judah Sandhy is one of those composers/producers who knows how to intertwine a heartwarming melody with exhilarating sound and production. This array of strings along with the humming feels ecstatic straight away in the intro. Haricharan gets a song that allows him to show his range and capabilities and one has to thank Judah for this. The intro strings sort of reminded me of the antara lines 'Neeche Ishq hai, Upar Rab hai" of "Ishq Bina" by AR Rahman from the album 'Taal'. The melody is here to make you feel love in every note that Hari sings " Kadhipinadha kadhilinadha". Kalyan Chakravarthy writes the lyrics.

The strings are played by Bangalore String Ensemble and the catchy rhythms by George Thomas, making the interlude blossom as Haricharan sings in a higher pitch. The arrangements come out with such style and effervescence in the 2nd minute with layers of strings playing one behind the other. The line "Onta pattesi pothe yemcheyne" is pure magic to the ears and Hari follows it up with a fine aalap. Maybe there is some Bilwala Thaat in the melody because I hear Raag Bilawal as well as some Raag Bihag. The title reminds me of Raag Shanmukhapriya.

The thumping percussion and drums all along are played by Jared Sandhy with guitars by Eric Gerald, woodwinds by Thilak Ram and Bhutto on the flute. Nikshep Gowda has worked on the song's pre-mix.

3. Saiyyan Na Maane

Singer/Composer/Lyricist: Simran Choudhary

Music producer: Amritanshu Dutta

Language: Hindi

Genre: Folk Fusion

Mood: Groovy

Folk-pop fusion works well almost every time as a testament to creativity from a musician, and if they can have some good vocalists, the effect just doubles up. Simran Choudhary does exactly that with her stylish and teasing vocals. The melody immediately climbs onto you like an unforgettable memory, and I do sense Khamaaj Thaat influences. The groovy rhythms, along with the Shehnai and keys, are glorious. I am reminded of that famous song 'zindagi maut na ban jaye' from the album "Sarfarosh". Simran goes all out in writing this tantalising melody and amps it up with her delivery.

Onkar plays the Shehnai, and it is a mix of classical touches and modern twists as he keeps intervening as the soloist. The antara with the line "Bairi ye duniya bairi saajan" is a finely written telling us that Simran is capable and committed to writing a full-fledged melody rather than just a few seconds of a hook line. The production is showing some creativity and finesse too as the rhythms get jaunty and bright once we hit the lines "raahat ki meri aankhiyan". Kudos to Amritanshu Dutta for the solidity he provides as the producer. The song's tone, overall glamorous fervour, also reminds me of the famous number "Jaane Do Na" by R.D. Burman and Asha Bhosle. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Pranav Gupta

4. Sab Ki Tarah

Singer: Prakriti Giri

Music Composer and Producer: Anmol Daniel

Lyrics: Bhanu Pandit

Language: Hindi

Genre: Ghazal- Pop fusion

Mood: Pathos

We get the flavour the Pop wave of the 1990s as we hear the Pianos in the intro, but when Prakriti Giri begins the mukhda, we get a Ghazal-esque touch. There is pathos in the melody, tempo, messaging and Prakriti's tone. Is there some Bilawal Thaat influence in the melody? Maybe. It is hard to ignore as she sings "jaa tu bhi mera dil thodke jaa". Bhanu Pandit pens the lyrics, and Anmol Daniel is the man behind the melody and music production.

The interlude with the solo flute and the faintest hint of a Sarangi ensures the melancholy remains meaningful. Prakriti is just getting started, and in the Antara, she launches herself into the song with more intent, and the vocals carry more vibrato and passion. There is sadness and no more hope as she sings "Keh to diya, mujhe chhod ke ja" and the extended stress on the word "chhod" is magical.

Anmol creates a very nice bridge section, and Prakriti is at her best " kaise maanu ke tujhe, sacch mein door jaana hai". Anmol mixes the tracks and kudos to him for keeping things mild and beautiful in this "meri ghum ki ghazal".

5. My Maima

Singers - Gaana Guna, Gaana Dharani, Ofro

Lyricists - Super Subu, Ofro

Music composed and produced by D.Imman

Language: Tamil

Genre: Gana-pop

Mood: Dance

This album was a delightful one called "Chennai City Gangsters", which I rated 3.5/5 thanks to three fine songs. This one gives me a splash of energy as Imman creates a fusion of Gana and some pop elements. Super Subu and ofRO write the very catchy and witty lyrics, and that is the spine of the song. Keba's acoustic guitars along with the thumping percussions conducted by Kaviraj lead the way. The melody written by Imman is the element of beauty here as it pulls you deeper into the song. He wastes no time and "My Maima, My Maima, Bye Bye Soltachu ma" itself has this chord progression to entice you.

Gaana Guna and Gana Dharani perform this Gana song with ease, poise, and the attitude of their delivery makes this song a winner all the way. The energy grows manifold with the hook-like "Naa Kuthu paatu, ava modern aartu," but this song shows that whether it is a "kuthu paatu" (folk song) or Modern Art, they are all significant and beautiful in their ways. The percussions are performed by Babu, Pradeep, Raja, Balu, Manoj, Saravanan, David, Chiranjeevi and Azhagiri. The chorus singers are Santosh Hariharan, Deepak, Shenbagaraj, Aravind Srinivas, Narayanan, Vignesh Narayanan, Veena Murali, Sowmya Mahadevan, Deepthi Suresh, Abinaya Shenbagaraj, Ala B Bala and Soundarya Nandakumar.

ofRO delivers these falsetto-styled lines in the interlude in English, and his frequent intervention is quite cool and funny like him saying "the worst" after the lines "fish thaan selfish thaan". Imman ensures even the charanam has a melody that can stand alone as a nice song and it feels like Kaapi Ragam. Keba keeps us on a high with his electric and bass guitars. We can hear the solo violin in the background played at breakneck speeds by Manoj and the Kanjeera is played by Charu Hariharan. The ELfe Choir comprising Roe Vincent, Angelin Nisha, Sheryl Suraj, Deepa Shankar, Nisha Sharon, Krithika Konda, Sneha Sathya, Padmaja Sreenivasan, Snigdha Chandra, Anuj Mathew, Rohit Sridhar, Reshwin Nishith, Aneesh Solomon gives us some nice western orchestral flavours too. All the tracks are recorded, mixed and mastered by D. Imman.

6. Yaathe

Composer, Writer, Producer: Umashankar Kannaiyan

Vocals: Darshana K.T.

Language:

Genre: Jazz

Mood: Groovy

It feels amazing to be single and dive deep into these genres that are not often used or expressed in the Tamil space, especially indie music. Umashankar Kannaiyan, take a bow for attempting and in the process striking gold with this Jazzy single. The job is only half done even if you have a melody and are confident of creating the soundscape of groovy Jazz music. The lead vocals matter the most, and here Darshana KT, who has sung amazing playback in Tamil movies, comes to the fore to deliver a devastating performance.

Her delivery, attitude and tone are all like home runs. The accompanying Alto Saxophone and the piano are just turning on the heat. The brass section with horns, trumpets, and trombones is by a band from San Francisco. The writing is excellent as we get to the best segment "mogam theeyo" and here Darshana exhibits immense skill as a vocalist. Kudos to Umashankar for handling these arrangements so well, and he keeps them as brilliant aids without hampering the vocal portions. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Jerrys Vincent.

7. Thirinjin

Composed, Written and Performed: Haniya Nafisa

Music Production: Zail

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Pop

Mood: Mild Pathos

The guitar motif in the intro reminds me of Sting's "Shape of My Heart" somewhat. But now that we know that Haniya Nafisa is on this project, be prepared to hear streaks of class in her writing and sweltering vocals. Haniya writes the lyrics, the melody and performs the lead vocals. Zail is the music producer, and it doesn't start getting racy until the 40th second. This is where the keys and rhythms begin to engage. The melody feels like Keeravani Ragam to me, and Haniya touches you with her high-pitched line "Karayathathuella".

The beginning of the verse is the segment that Haniya draws and arrests the listener as she sings "Karanam palathaavanam", and the chord progression in this verse is outstanding, giving us listeners more than a few surprises like " kayyumpole mungi thaavanam". The production by Zail, along with additional production by Raunaq, works effectively. Rajan KS does the mixing and mastering. Aslam Seju handles the album art and creative direction, with Amaan Seju on illustration and animation duties.

8. Ray

Music Composer / Singer - SUSHIN SHYAM

Lyrics - VINAYAK SASIKUMAR

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Synth-Pop

Mood: Immersive

You cannot keep a brilliant artist silent for too long! Sudhin Shyam took a break from film composing, and that is something that could be fruitful for him and also an inspiring model for others who could suffer from burnout. Meanwhile, Sushin releases this spectacular single called Ray, and it feels like a Ray of hope for music lovers. The song is not only an impactful number with crisp and creative production, but the story and video is top-notch. Vimal Chandran handles the story and direction, and I recommend seeing the music video as well.

Sushin performs the lead vocals along with composition and music production, and Vinayak Sasikumar writes the lyrics. There is enough already happening in the background with the guitars, keys, synths and rhythms. The interlude is heavy on keys and rhythms, and this is where the adrenaline builds up and to bring on the Dilruba in the interlude was delightful and makes the heart swell with joy when you hear it. Saroja plays the Dilruba, and Naveen Napier is the bassist. Rithu Vysakh shines as the one-man string quartet player, and the melody written for the violins is a mix of pathos and poetry.

The melody is simple and brief and Sushin does face some shortcomings as a vocalist, but nothing comes in the way thanks to the arrangements and supremacy in production. Lijesh Kumar is on the Melodyne. The humming towards the outro feels cathartic. The tracks are mixed by Abin Paul and mastered by Jeo Laporta.

9. Chirakugal

Composed by Rajesh Murugesan

Vocals: Suroor Musthafa and Gayathry Rajiv

Lyrics: Shabareesh Varma

Music Produced by Sibi Mathew Alex, Rajesh Murugaesan

Language: Malayalam

Genre: Light Music

Mood:

A good composer is Rajesh Murugesan and he continues his dedicated work in Mollwood with a recent movie album called "United Kingdom of Kerala". For me was the best song of the album. The lead vocals are by Suroor Musthafa and Gayathry Rajiv. The song has some very elaborate choral arrangements and to perform them we have some exquisite vocalists like Aparna Harikumar, Kamalaja, Akash VH and Suroor himself. Crispin Netto is all alone playing the rhythm guitar, the chirpy Ukulele and the electric guitars as well. The Dilruba is played by Saroja.

The Ukulele is constantly playing like a rhythm guitar as well as Suroor sings the pallavi and anupallavi with all his charm and vigour. The accompaniments on strings by Albun Jose and Joby Jose are creating that slice of awe. The chorus with "Ey Samsarame" feels like a Govin Vasantha composition like something out of his outstanding Tamil album '96'. The lead vocals by Gayathry Rajiv are like a million drops of honey to my ears and she delivers the lines with grace and romanticism.

The arrangements and production are by Rajesh and Sibi Mathew Alex, who keep making great interventions with the strings, harmonies and electric guitar as we me from one style to another. The humming and vocal grunts and vocalisations are exhilarating. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Avinash Sathish at Jovi Records Chennai. The outro has this segment with the violins and strings in the background, which is quite captivating.

10. Yaddan Teriyaan

Composer, Singer - Deepanshi Nagar

Lyricist, Music Production - Aviral Kumar

Language: Hindi

Genre: Pop

Mood: Romantic

I have been waiting eagerly since I featured Deepanshi Nagar a while ago and here she is with a catchy as well as endearing track. Bhavya Dubey brings the guitar riffs in the intro and it feels like the start of 'Aisha' the version by the group 'Outlandish'. Deepanshi possesses a very beautiful voice and also a wide vocal range and it is evident within the first few lines of the verse. The favourite part is "Kyun Khud per mera" followed by a nice brief alaap.

The chorus segment features backing vocal accompaniments, but the guitars remain pivotal to the song's production and rhythm as well. Aviral Kumar pens the lyrics and handles the arrangements and production. He stays mild without overpowering and that helps Deepanshi's melody and singing shine. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Rahul Agrawat.
